Best Way to Get Discounted EFTPOS Gift Card

Hi guys,
Does anyone know any place where you can find discounted giftcards that are not restricted to certain stores, for example, something like a visa or mastercard gift card, that can be used anywhere with an eftpos machine?

You don't usually get a straight-up discount on EFTPOS cards, & there's usually also a $5.95 or $6.95 purchase or card activation fee — meaning you always have to pay more than the face value of the card with each purchase.

Most people buy them when there's a 10x loyalty point bonus (e.g FlyBuys with Coles or Rewards Pts with Woolworths)

Wookiemonster is probably the person to ask for anything gift-card related.

Discounted EFTPOS/Visa/Mastercard gift cards deals rarely happen, typically because of money laundering concerns. During the last 10% off Coles Mastercard gift card deal, the store manager at a store in my area was incredibly alarmed at the number of people using cash to purchase 4x or 5x $250 Mastercard gift cards in one transaction…

Even deals for bonus Flybuys or Everyday Rewards points on EFTPOS/Visa/Mastercard gift cards are unusual.

I recently posted a comment that may be of interest to you, although the context of the comment was different to the question you are asking. However, that comment only really covers Visa and Mastercard gift cards sold at brick & mortar retailers, so I'll need go into EFTPOS gift cards in more detail…

    Perfect EFTPOS gift card

Denominations Available Purchase Fee1 Sold at…
$50 $5.95 Woolworths, BIG W, ALDI, Officeworks, Kmart
$100 $6.95 Woolworths, BIG W, ALDI, Officeworks, Kmart
    $200 $7.95 BIG W, Officeworks
    $500 $7.95 Officeworks
$20-$500 variable load $7.95 Woolworths, ALDI
    • I do not remember ever seeing Perfect EFTPOS gift cards sold at an upfront discount.

    • Woolworths ran bonus Everyday Rewards points deals on Perfect EFTPOS gift cards three times (1, 2, 3) in the last 12 months, although they have only been 10x Everyday Rewards points per $1 spent (excluding the gift card purchase fee). With a 10x points rate, the only denomination where you'll earn enough points to exceed the value of the gift card purchase fee is the variable load denomination, although the last Perfect EFTPOS gift card deal at Woolworths excluded the variable load denomination!

    • BIG W ran bonus Everyday Rewards points deals on Perfect EFTPOS gift cards once or twice in the last 12 months, although they have only been 10x Everyday Rewards points per $1 spent (excluding the gift card purchase fee). With a 10x points rate, the only denomination where you'll earn enough points to exceed the value of the gift card purchase fee is the $200 denomination.

    • I have never seen ALDI, Officeworks or Kmart do deals on EFTPOS gift cards.

    TCN EFTPOS gift cards

I'm not going to bother creating a table for TCN EFTPOS gift cards for four reasons:

    • I don't recall all the denominations sold in brick & mortar retailers (or associated gift card fees).

    • I remember that Coles and Target sells TCN EFTPOS gift cards, but I don't remember which denominations they stock.

    • I do not recall seeing TCN EFTPOS gift cards sold at an upfront discount.

    • I do not recall seeing a deal where the value of the points you earn from the purchase exceeds the gift card purchase fee. I remember Coles running a bonus points deal on the $100 TCN EFTPOS gift card (which has a purchase fee of $5.95) 12-18 months ago. However, you only earned a total of 1100 Flybuys points per $100 TCN EFTPOS gift card, which was valued less than the purchase fee ($5.50 in Flybuys Dollars vs $5.95 purchase fee).

    Westfield EFTPOS gift cards

Denominations Available Purchase Fee Sold at…
$50 $5.95 Woolworths, BIG W, Australia Post (online store)
$100 $5.95 Woolworths, BIG W, Australia Post (online store)
$200(?) $2.95 Westfield service desk (situated in Westfield shopping centres)
    • I do not remember ever seeing Westfield EFTPOS gift cards sold at an upfront discount.

    • Woolworths ran bonus Everyday Rewards points deals on Westfield EFTPOS gift cards once in the last 12 months, although that was only 20x Everyday Rewards points per $1 spent (excluding the gift card purchase fee). With a 20x points rate, the only denomination where you'll earn enough points to exceed the value of the gift card purchase fee is the $100 denomination.

    • I do not remember seeing BIG W run any deals.

    • I do not remember seeing Australia Post's online store run any deals, although they accidentally sold Westfield EFTPOS gift cards with a $0 purchase fee for about a month last year.

    • The service desk at Westfield shopping centres either sells Westfield EFTPOS gift cards in a variable denomination (max $200) or in fixed denominations (e.g. $50, $100, $200), but I have never actually asked the Westfield service desk about this…

You'll notice that this comment only focuses on EFTPOS gift cards (and Visa and Mastercard gift cards) sold at brick & mortar retailers. I haven't touched on digital EFTPOS, Visa or Mastercard gift cards you can purchase through online retailers (e.g. Westfield's website, Giftz.com.au, Card.Gift, TCN's website), because there are too many to keep track of! I have my limits…

    1. Purchase fees are only payable once at the time of purchase.

    • Thanks WookieMonster.

I purchased a VISA gift card from Colesworth, but the problem was whenever you swipe that card, you mostly had to sign the paper. Some staff members were good and they proceeded without signature but mostly I had to do. Also had the same problem with self check out at colesworth.

Is EFTPOS gift card different from VISA gift card?

Yes, EFTPOS gift cards authenticate purchases differently from Visa gift cards. You must authenticate an EFTPOS gift card using the PIN associated with the EFTPOS gift card. The PIN should be printed on the back of an EFTPOS gift card.

In regards to redeeming signature-only Visa/Mastercard gift cards:

        • If you are wanting to redeem less than $35 at Coles or Woolworths (or BIG W), the checkout should redeem the amount owed without asking for a PIN or signature.

        • In my experience, Woolworths (and BIG W) checkouts will not ask you to provide a signature for a purchase, even if your purchase is $35 or over and you simply press Enter/OK on the PIN prompt screen without entering anything. It should approve the purchase without you needing to go through signature verification. Maybe the checkouts at Woolworths in your area are programmed differently? On the other hand, I know that if you're wanting to redeem $35 or more from a signature-only card at Coles self checkouts, it will print a small slip of paper and ask you for a copy of your signature.

Thanks WookieMonster. I believe EFTPOS gift cards are the way to go if you need one.

I used that gift card over 2 years but I can recall from my faded memory that Woolworths sometimes wouldn't require signatures.
