Petrol Price Decreasing - Fill up Now or Keep Waiting

Those who missed out on filling up their car after the Wantirna price error two weeks ago will have been watching this with interest.

On this page: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/petrol-diesel-lpg/petrol-p…

OzB favourite page: https://projectzerothree.info/trends.php is also showing prices trending downwards.

The official advice on the ACCC page is that 'motorist should delay buying petrol until later' but I'm having a massive case of FOMO, though I still have half a tank left.

What would you do?

I have FOMO too. I'll fill up now!

I'll wait and see for the next two days and will fill up if nothing else changes.

I'm a betting (wo)man. Will only fill up when I see price move up even by a little.

Make 7 7-11 accounts and lock in everyday? :P

Who cares!!! Got my "Your new vehicle is in transit." email today. So I'll be getting my fuel out of the wall socket soon…

      electric moped?
      .

      • Weirdly enough, I upgraded from the CUx to a Fonz Arthur 2+ (bigger/faster/more range) and picking that up this weekend. Also have a pre-order in for a Savic C-Series if that ever gets past the "vapourware" stage… But that isn't due until June 2023.

Nope, notification was for the new car. It has or is just leaving the factory. So I'm guessing late Aug to early Sept for delivery?

        • Fonz could have had mini ape hangers
          .

Got your oil/electricity themed number plates on order yet? I saw a Tesla you would have liked yesterday, had "27mhz" on the plates, and a massive antenna sticking up out of the boot.

      • +1

Hahaha… No w&#ker plates, sadly. It's a work vehicle for "evaluation purposes". I wanted to get a douch plate for it, but boss said "no". With the advent of EV's becoming more common, boss wanted one to use as a mule and to learn servicing on.

Might get "2.6GHZ" and put a shorter antenna on it :D

        • Damn, missed opportunity.

Might get "2.6GHZ" and put a shorter antenna on it :D

          😂 That would be gold

nothing better than the rush of trying to get to your destination with the yellow 'fuel indicator low' light on.

    • You can drive another 100km from the time when the low fuel light first comes on.

Adrenaline kicks in when the car stutters on a mild uphill.

      • My yellow light goes on and I have two blcoks of fuel left.

The fuel blocks disappeared and I was able to fill 40 liters. So 10 liters in spare capacity. Which would get me 100km.

      • Adrenaline is being on the freeway and having 20km range left with 40km to the next town.

      • depends on how many litres to the KM the beast consumes!!!!!

    • i literally did that way too many times just waiting for the best price (sometimes I lucked out, sometimes I bit the bullet)

I'd be filling up as much as I can before September 28th.

but I'm having a massive case of FOMO, though I still have half a tank left.

Me too. So I will go out and drive around tonight to use up the full tank that I've got now. Then I'll go and fill up with the satisfaction of knowing that I paid a lower price.

  • My usual response to media reports of URL price changes is to expect the opposite (or nothing).

Fuel has been coming down, but I’ve pretty much given up trying to game the system. I buy it when I need it and fill the tank every time, but I’ll at least check local prices and pick a cheaper servo that’s not too much out of the way.

  • We are down to mid $1.50s in South Australia.

Check PetrolSpy once a day. As soon as you see some outlets pricing 40+c more than others, go fill up. That's my strategy.

    • I have noticed it doesn't have a chart for diesel. Is there an ap that tracks diesel prices?

  • I work in the industry so I usually check the price movement of WTI Crude - OilPrice , in my experience its about a week delay before we feel any changes. Since the fuel drop, its been sitting on $95.00 on an average compared to the peak of $120.00 10/6.

    • NSW seems to have its own cycles on top of that

  • For Victoria, with the Viva (Shell) TGP for U91 sitting at $1.53, and Ampol (Woolworths etc) sitting at $1.60 one can readily see how much we are being screwed at the current pump prices. For example, motorists in Sunbury are being charged around $2.09

    • That is because all the rich people live in Sunbury :)

  • Another crystal ball question.

What's with the genuine responses? Where are the crystal ball jokes?

Another good site I recently came across is here, which shows the Terminal Gate Prices, effectively the wholesale rate that the retailers are buying their fuel at. If you tap on your capital city you get a nice graph eg Melbourne which updates Mon to Fri 2pm local time.

If TGP keeps dropping then retail will likely keep dropping. It’s not until retailers start selling at or below TGP that eventually some buckle and raise their prices by 40c then pretty much everyone follows in the next few days and the cycle repeats…

  • Let’s say the price drops 5 cents at a servo that’s not even across town, just slightly out of your way. If you have an average 40 litre tank, is it really worth your time to go on a jaunt for the sake of saving $2?

    Serious question.

Also I vote “fill up wherever & whenever I need to”.

    • it creates more competition

      • Sure, but is it worth your time?

I value my time pretty highly. If there were 2 servos, and one was doing a 10 cent off promo, and was therefore all queued up and busy, I’d go to the quiet one across the street with the standard price. Because avoiding 10 mins of messing around is worth more to me than $4.

        • There's a disparity around us with petrol prices and I can routinely save 20 - 30c a litre if I drive a good 20m to the suburb where there are good prices. And yes, often the queue for the stations there are long. I do try to incorporate it into some other errands in the area but yes, it's touch and go even with a $15 saving if it's worth the effort overall.

          • @kiitos: Today's saving reminded me of this thread - saving was 40c per litre using 7/11 fuel lock, and if I had gone to a Caltex and used a discount voucher, would have been 44c per litre cheaper.
