Seagate External Desktop 2TB Hard Drive - $99 Harvey Norman

57

Can't say this is better than Officeworks and JB-Hi Fi's deals as this one is only USB 2.0, older model. Most probably get negs but for anyone who is close to a HN you got this deal. or for those who's local JB or OW sold out of the USB 3.0 here is an alternative.

  • Most officeworks still have stock of the $98 USB 3.0 version.
At least the ones in my area. Fairfield, NSW had about 7 left when I was there this afternoon.

    • Went to OW Fitzroy, VIC yesterday. Plenty of stocks. 20+. No price tag.

Since they had no price tag, after some scanning, the tech said it was $145 so I showed him the JBHifi $99 deal on OzBargain.

He called JBHifi but that deal just expired so couldn't confirm the $99 price. (He was about to give me 5% price match though).

I showed him this one as it's more recent so… bang… got 2 for $188 (no call confirmation needed, expired date above is later this month). Kudos to the OW Fitzroy tech.

(Anyway, cracked the cases, both are 7200rpm md001 model and usb 3.0)

  • OW post as well.

Not sure with prices (i thought it was free), but would still be better than this deal

    edit:

Officeworks also provides free delivery for purchases over $55.

    Makes this deal sorta pointless

    • Unless you live close to HN and you are just going to rip the HDD out of the enclosure.

      • A usb 3.0 enclosure is better than usb 2.0 one.

        • I believe he/she means for the HDD, the enclosure would be irrelevant.

(i.e. convert external drive to internal drive)

  • I have both the USB 2.0 2TB and USB 3.0 2TB(OW). 28MB/s vs 110MB/s and it is also $1 cheaper at OW.
This deal is not neg worthy, but there are better deals.

    • I can right now go onto the OW website, and can get something cheaper (granted not much) and better, with free delivery!

doesn't seem like a deal compared to the usb 3 version at the same price

I guess by definition and your own description, this is not a bargain.

    • yep… couldnt have said it better. OP admits this isnt a deal yet posts anyway. Easy neg.

Seagate are really becoming the home brand of hard drives, and that's what the deserve. Pieces of shite.

    • What's the shame in becoming the home brand if the quality is still good?

      • ah, may have missed the point there.

        "home brand" means no quality.

        (not that i agree)

      • Yes, Seagate are terribly unreliable imo.

  • I don't get it. If you describe that you think it'll get negatives why post :s

  • slower drive & more expensive than OW with no free shipping, with the only benefit being you can pick it up if you live near a Harvey Norman.. errr ok

  • +2

I guess this deal is useful if you are scared of speed, and want to force yourself the exercise of walking to HN.

    • Or if you just want to rip the drive from the garbage housing, not have to use another power birck and put it in a NAS then it makes no difference at all…..

  • according to a comment in the JB post, this (the USB2.0 version) is $95 at JB Hi-Fi.

  • "Me too."

(Or maybe a permanent price reduction is on the cards?)

  • I may be wrong ;) but this is exactly the sort of "bargain" I expect of Hardly Normal.

(Haven't set foot inside of one of their stores for about 10 years; did try their online site and had the worst "bargain" ever - their socks! ) all in the garbage now - almost the only Ozbargain I can recall regretting. I wonder how they keep going.

I bought the 3.0 version from JB yesterday.)

    • Or if you were lucky, HP Touchpad for $98!

  • With this model is there a better chance of getting one of the 5900RPM drives inside? I gather from the other threads that the USB3 ones have the 7200 inside.

  • When JB put the ext 2tb USB 3 on sale for $99, I rang my local HN store and was totally laughed and was told HN don't price match JB because they are not a store in our "local" area (which is kind of true, the closest JB is about an hour away) and was advised that HN sell these ext drives for $199 if I was still interested. About an hour or so later OW dropped there prices and so just for kicks I re-rang HN and was yet again told that our local Officeworks store didn't have any stock they still refuse to price match. I'm not sure about other HN stores but ours goes on about 10% price match, which i have never been able to get them to do, but OW is more than happy to price match anyone, even Big W (which again is about an hour away.)

I reckon if I ring HN again to ask for a ext 2tb USB 2.0 for this price they would still laugh at me and probably say it's online only blah blah blah.

  • Harvey Norman at Everton Park in Queensland have two piles of these drives, both the USB3 version. The sticker says something like $205 and they scan at $169, so I didn't bother to grab one. Maybe I should have insisted on the price because their website is still showing $99 "Amazing Deal" and "while stocks last" and stock at all the local stores.
