    • $499 @ JB Hifi as of yesterday

      • wow, that's a huge margin on this item.

    • Quite cheap. RRP $500, common store prices $250-400, best deal online recently has been CotD and LGS selling for around $200, and the best deal ever was the $139 pricing error/deal that Dick Smith did about 2 months ago.

About $195 @ logitechshop so yes it's cheaper I believe.

All I can say is using the store (I'm assuming you mean DS Auburn) comp to login and post on OZbargain..rofl..talk about dedication.

  • The RRP is such a joke.

  • DS had them $129 on that big sale. Great Price.

  • Horrifically tempted to go and get one in the morning even though all I play is GT5 (and not even that often)

  • +1

    logitechshop can do better

    • You mean LGS will beat this price in the near future? :)

      • -1

Dunno. To lazy to go to ds and hope they have it in stock or going thru price match crap. Lts will post it!!!
        Not the ozb spirit… Lol

    • Rather buy from the one driving the low price, if the mark up is so high on this item why cant all retailers "do better on it".

      • +1

Because they need to earn money to keep the business going? If working on minimal margins, you might as well ask them to run a charity service. Let me see you work for minimum wage that just allows you to get by.

        • +5

Serious ? Margins in this country are insane. Target has a minimum mark up of 150% on all items.

I can still buy stuff from the USA cheaper than I can here and get free courier shipping, which means delivery in 48 hours.

Plenty of companies work on low margins (Aldi for example) and do very well.

Dick Smith aren't likely to sell this below cost, so they're still making money on it at $150, so why was it originally sold (and still being sold according to posts above) at $450+ ? Greed, that's why.

        • +2

Completely agree, markups in Australia are insane, retailers can take advantage of us consumers since there are so few competitors here (compared to places such as the US).

        • See now they are all sold out at that price and they are still making money on them! What does that tell you??

        • Flawed logic…. I wonder how much the workers get paid in these stores that have the huge markups… oh wait theyre on minimum wage and just getting by… derp

        • +3

While this may be true, that DSE Auburn won't be selling them at a loss, they probably aren't going to be making any money out of this either. $150 is probably very close to invoice cost for the item, meaning what they paid for it from the wholesaler. The whole point of a creditor coming in isn't to make money, it is to liquidate stock at the fastest rate possible that is reasonable for the amount of profit lost (and in most cases, a loss on overheads such as rent and staff salary.) They'll start the sale first at 20-30% off and still make money and cover their overheads but once it's drawn out for a few weeks they'll then cut their profit margins and first loose on overheads and then when there's only a few things left to sell, a firesale and actually sell things below invoice cost.

          As for the excessive RRP:
          1. It's set by the manufacturer, and in the past few months I've barely seen anywhere that's sold them at RRP of $499 I've seen $399 constantly at DSE and $450 at EB and cheaper elsewhere.
          2. The excessive RRP and why retailers sell at such a high price is because it's a niche market item. For every day that it sits on the floor or in storage it's costing them money. An item such as a G27 it could be sitting in storage for months before it's even sold. After taking out overhead costs and what not I'd say it'd be fair to assume that the profit should be at least 20-30% before a store would consider stocking such a slow moving item.

I'm not saying that they won't make a killing on selling one of these, I'd estimate it at anywhere between $100-150 when sold at RRP. But there's bloody good reason why high value slow moving stock in niche markets are so high. I once saw the only Z5500 sit in a store for almost 6 months (it had a ding on the box and every time I saw it, the ding was in the exact same spot that's how I identified it) before being part of a sale and then gone. Now over that 6 month period imagine the overhead costs…. The high RRP is the only incentive for retail stores to stock the item.

        • it is to liquidate stock at the fastest rate possible that is reasonable for the amount of profit lost

Not in my experience. The longer it takes to sell, the more hours they can charge their creditors. Trust me.

Minimum wage in USA is $5/hr. What's the minimum wage in Aussie?

It boils down to the economic conditions of the country. If you want cheaper stuff, by all means take away minimum wages and you'll see the cost of the items going down.

Also remember the 10% GST that you're not paying when you purchase from oversea, courier costs bugger all when you're on a huge corporate account. I do believe certain stuff in Australia has too much of a markup such as luxury cars. Mark ups are easily 50% and i do feel sore in that area as many others.

But retailers and importers in recent times have been trying to become more economically viable by bringing the cost of the items down. One of the ways is cutting jobs. Less workers = less minimum pay to dish out.

Minimum wage and just getting by does not reflect the current state of most tier 1 workers. Being able to afford an iphone and stuff != getting by IMO. Live overseas for a while and you'll quickly understand what getting by is. Being able to afford food and the occasional movie in the cinema.

Australians have it so good and all you guys complain about is 1st world issues of "oh there is too much markup on the gaming console/accessories". Whilst there are people who DON't even have the option of having the thought.

To the Aldi comparison, have you compared Aldi prices locally vs overseas like.. since everyone loves the country… America? It's still MORE EXPENSIVE by 30% at least for most of the similar items. Aldi is still generally cheaper than the rest… yes. But make no mistake in thinking they have not adapted to the local pricing.

So it boils down to the same argument. Different economic conditions dictates different prices. I can eat a bowl of noodles of similar portions in China for AUD$1 where in aussie it's gonna cost me $7.50 at hunter connection SYD (which is cheap considering) or Market city NSW $9.50 or $10.50 Northbridge WA …. does it mean i'm getting ripped off?

        • The job of the creditor/liquidator is to recoup as much money as possible (they do however get the first cut of the share). The longer they drag it out the less money they'll recoup (due to increasing costs), which is against what they were hired to do. If the person who called them in to do the job finds that the creditor didn't recoup blah blah blah amount of money they simply won't pay them the target bonus or performance bonus (which really is where the money lies).
The closure of the two GAME stores in my area was the fastest I've ever seen a company in administration close down it's stores, I think it was 2 maybe 3 weeks from announcement and the shutters were down!
