VAVA 1TB Portable External SSD Touch USB C Fingerprint 540MB/s $92.64 / $90.46 Delivered (with eBay Plus) @ Sunvalley-Group eBay

Got one of these from a previous deal and it was a surprisingly good product. It's back again at a slightly higher price and I think this is a good deal for anyone looking for a 1TB portable SSD.

I did an unofficial speed test on mine and got the following results,
Copied 29.7 GB of data in 1min 29secs with approx. 335 MB/s sustained write speed with no dips in performance. Read speed is approx. 425 MB/s. Good performance for a SATA based drive.

    Cheers OP. Got one.
Reviews seem positive and the price is too good to pass up

  • Can you disable the fingerprint?

    • +1

Yes, it's optional. The fingerprint security feature is only enabled once activated, otherwise it acts like normal drive.

  • Looks like a good external drive to play Xbox games on series X or PS4 games on ps5.

    • Legit? Can this price be used to store and play Xbox Series X games?

      • +2

        No.

      • I said Xbox games, series X games are different to gaming.

A quick note for those with Mac computers

The (security disabled) drive does work as a normal external drive with Mac's, however the VAVA portable SSD Touch software only works properly with MacOS BigSur and older operating system (and Vava appears to have no plans to update the software to support the current or newer OS's) - at least that's what their support people have told me

So if you're running the current OS (Monterey) you can't properly enable the security (encryption) nor fingerprint functions - in my case it allowed me to turn security on but then wouldn't allow me to unlock the drive or disable the security feature rendering the drive unusable (until I found an older Mac to disable the feature on). If the drive is in "security enabled" mode you won't be able to unlock and use the drive on a MacOS Monterey or newer machine

  • Sorry for dumb question. What makes this so much more valuable than the random and cheap portable SSDs you can find on eBay? I understand there's better speeds on this for games, but won't this still heat up more and wear down faster than an internal drive?

And you could just encrypt any drive with bitlocker or veracrypt, no? Or is the selling point that this is hardware encryption and doesn't screw up the drive's speed as much?

Can you get 1tb ssd drives much cheaper?

      • This VAVA seems a quality unit but just looking on eBay one of the suggestions was this …surely it can’t be real… 16TB for $38

        • +1

          surely it can’t be real

Yep, a great way to lose $38.
Line all eBay sellers caught lying & selling games. They'll be shocked, possibly deny it and in the end refund you. But every will let them continue selling.

This is about as cheap as it gets for 1TB SSDs, internal or external. If there's ones that are significantly cheaper then 99 times out of 100 they're faking the capacity and it's not safe to store your data on because stuff will get overwritten.

Unsure about this drive specifically but generally with these types of ones the fingerprint is giving you more security while still being convenient (instead of having to run software and/or type long passwords every time you're using the drive somewhere else)

It's just a nice cost effective portable SSD with the added benefit of fingerprint security, don't overthink it.

Also, what makes you think an external SSD will heat up more and wear down faster than an internal drive? If anything the drive enclosure will act as a heat spreader and keep it cool.

Bought two, and got an additional "quantity discount" of 6% off, final price $170.07 or ~ $85.04 each. Thanks OP!

    • Cheers!

  • 3 year limited warranty is that in Australia as well.

  • Can these drives work with your smart TV and play movies and photos, without the fingerprint authentication?

    • +1

yes it can be a normal hard drive, just don't enable the fingerprint feature.

  • Are these codes able to be used on multiple purchases? Eg, this drive and a laptop , or are they use once only ?

    • Use code up to 5 times

      • Thanks

Mine arrived a few days ago. It is showing 953.77GB. Working great.

  • Just received an email about this order starting with "ORDER UPDATE: High Speed 512GB USB…."

    • Well my two units arrived yesterday and they report as 1TB, yet to be proven though as I haven’t used them in anger yet …

  • Hi does this work on iPhones?
