  • NVME or SATA drive inside?

    • +3

from similar eBay ads, I infer it's a SATA

    • Seems SATA speed, theoretical, not sure if practically achievable.

    • +2

According to the IndieGoGo page, the controller is SATA SM2258XT

      • That would mean it's DRAMless, aka no cache.

        • Can you explain it like i am 8 years old ?

          • +15

@Allaboutdiscounts: A very basic explanation (before a certain someone goes well actually) is that when writing to the SSD (e.g. transferring files) the DRAM cache keeps the speed fast consistently. Without the DRAM cache the speed can drop from being advertised ~540MB/s down to something lower like ~200MB/s or ~100MB/s for a period of time after a certain amount of information has been written. This could happen after 2GBs of files being transferred at once, or it could happen after 20GB. It all depends on the setup of the SSD.

If you're not constantly writing a lot of information or transferring larges and mostly reading files on the SSD then it's fine.

            • @Clear: Good explanation, thanks

            • +2

              @Clear: Nice explanation. Thanks.
              I get it even I'm 7. :-D

          • +8

            @Allaboutdiscounts: Is poopoo. No buy.

            • @[Deactivated]: 7GB copied to this drive in around 10 seconds seems pretty fast. This reviewer has the 2TB model so that might be a bit faster.

Look I bought one. Not sure why. Whyyyyy ozbargain Whyyyyy.

    • +2

      Me too :D

      • +2

        Me three

    • review it for us

    • Haha I'm tempted but don't store anything really on local drives anymore. Cloud ftw!

  • Fingerprint security normally costs quite a bit

  • +4

What happens if the drive fails in the warranty period…. do you have to chop your finger off and send it back to the company to get fixed? Does the fingerprint scan automatically encrypt the data?
I'd like to keep my digits lol

    • If I sent any harddrive away to get "fixed", I wouldn't expect to get my data back. Most of the time I'm sure they just send you a fresh drive, and recycle the dead one.

      • Seagate offer a data recovery service with their hdd's in the warranty period. Most do send back a fresh drive, you're correct. Ssd's on the other hand can simply die due to not being used or having no current running through them.
Still…. i'd like to keep my fingers lmao
Soon it'll be an eye retina scan…. bugger giving them an eyeball :-P

    What‘s in the box:

    1×RAVPower Magnetic Wireless Power Bank

    1×USB-C to USB-C Cable

    1×User Manual

    Ehhh??

  • +1

From a technical perspective, how does this work? Fingerprints can't be used for encryption as the data from the sensor isn't consistent, unlike a password.

    • +5

I think the device generates a single public/private key pair to encrypt all data. In addition, it allows you register up to 10 fingerprints. Once a fingerprint matches one of the registered ones, the private key can be used to decrypt data.

      • Thanks. That makes sense.

    • I guess also you don't want it to stop reading correctly!

    Price is $124 after coupon?

    NEWARRIVALSALE doesn't work.

    • +1

      Same

  • +1

It's been price jacked. These eBay sellers are disappointing.

  • +1

    Code does not apply.

  • +4

    Was searching some reviews
Went back but code is not working anymored
    Well, $87 saved

  • +1

You get what you pay for..

  • Guys, the code worked.

    I bought 3 cause I thought $87 was a great deal for a 1TB SSD.
Right know there's like some Ozbargain xbox 1tb deals for $250. Why can't I just use one of these as the 1tb hard drives I asked myself.

    • Thinking the same for a Windows Boot drive well compared to an old school physical hard drive how bad could they be?

  • Have they figured out how to clone fingers yet? my misses is asking?

  • it says compatible with mac? I guess not usable for Windows/Smart TV then.

  • Anyone know what drives are inside?

  • +1

Received mine today. Feels high quality and performs well. Copied 29.7 GB of data in 1min 29secs with approx. 335 MB/s sustained write speed with no dips in performance. Read speed is approx. 425 MB/s.

    • Received mine today as well.

Set up the fingerprint security and was able to use it on an IPad Pro without needing to install an app. Gives me hope that I'll be able to use it on Linux or a system without drivers.

  • Got mine today - very nice bit of kit!
