used booking.com just yesterday to make a hotel booking and the quote through CR came up more than $100 higher than without activating CR.

    • Interesting…..

Yep, very common in my experience and you can often save more instantly by going direct (or just use a different aggregator site).

I use booking.com a lot purely for the safe and easy free cancellation 24hrs before with all the covid uncertainties. I agree other options are likely better otherwise

Definitely need to DYOR with these ones and check the prices beforehand. Luckily the last hotel I booked with upsized cashback didn’t have a jacked up price across other browsers and using incognito.

    • Also good idea to compare between booking.com and Agoda. Personal experience is that on any same given day, price for Agoda is usually cheaper by 5-10% for the same room type at the same hotel on the same day.

Just use Expedia with mastercard 12%. At least the discount is upfront and no need to worry about tracking

Prices are higher when you go through CR.

    • +2

      They are. Same with shopback

  • Price was higher when I went through cash rewards and shopback. When I contacted them they said to contact the seller..

    • "I can see that indeed it appears to be a difference in the room price.

I understand that this is not an ideal situation and you should know that ShopBack is not involved and has no control over the pricing customers see on the merchant's page. This being the case, it is not something we can look into further. Prices shown on a merchant site are dictated by the brand.

We would advise you to review prices accordingly and decide which options would be best for you taking into account the cashback that would be earned from ShopBack as well."

Same thing for cash rewards but couldn't find the email

Haha this is pretty funny. Shopback is "not involved"? That's a funny response since clicking through their website is the single determining factor in the price being increased dramatically.

        • Right!?

  • Anyone know when the CB will end?

    • Tomorrow.

      • Seems to have ended already. I was just about to book.

people are finally allowed to neg this misleading cheating practice? Everyone was on there side when I have brought it up before

    • TA is a protected species in these here parts.

Another tip, and it seems to often work best for Agoda, is to do the search for the hotel you have decided upon thru Tripadvisor, and then click thru to Agoda from there. Often seems to give a lower price than going to Agoda direct. Works almost every time. Counter intuitive, I know! But it works. 95% of the time.

    Long post incoming!!

10% cashback is better than 5%, but 12% (or higher) is the bargain territory IMO. And they come up on a semi-regular basis for Booking and Agoda.

FWIW….I have recently completed a 9-country, 14-city accommodation booking marathon. I must have checked close to one hundred different hotel choices across those destinations, ALL of them (i) via the hotel website directly (ii) via Booking/Agoda not using CR (iii) via Booking/Agoda using CR and (iv) via aggregator sites such as Google, Tripadvisor, Trivago etc. Surprisingly, the Tripadvisor search engine threw up some real gem! (usually sending me to Agoda).

The only destination where I found the price getting "bumped up" going through CR was in Malaysia, and that was a single location and not across all sellers. Everywhere else (Europe), and I mean EVERYWHERE else, I was hitting the same price going to Booking/Agoda via CR as I did going to Booking/Agoda directly.

Another little tip: If you have the energy, once you have settled on a particular hotel, try searching it again on Agoda (and Booking) via your mobile. I occasionally saw a "Mobile Only Price" pop up - always on Agoda from memory - that was better than the Agoda desktop site, and equivalent or better than the "cashbacked" price, but of course you get the pricing benefit immediately rather than in the future.

    • Thanks for the tip! Was about to book to get the cashback but you're right, cheaper through mobile.

    • Would ya know if we can pay with a different card (or different type of card i.e. VISA instead of MASTERCARD or vice versa) than the details of the card we put online (for reservation) for a Hotel booking from Booking.com (that dont require UPFRONT payment) AND STILL GET CASHBACK ?

      • +1

I don't have the definitive answer to this, probably on a rep from Booking or Agoda could tell you how their systems/tracking is affected by a change to the original reservation.

My expectation would be that if the only change you're making to a reservation is something like updating the card details, or adding a guest's name, or changing the arrival hour etc, but the core details of the booking remain intact (dates, room, prices etc) then it should be okay.

But I'm not providing any guarantees on that!! I think the most prudent advice (mentioned by a rep on here once, I think) is to try to keep your original booking intact if you can.

  • I suggest if you can wait, wait for a bit higher Cashback deal like 12% or more.

Totally agree the fact that Clicking the link through a Cashback affiliate/partner like SB or CR the booking.com site racks up prices for SOME or MOST of the hotels (BUT NOT ALL of them).

So you can still find some hotels which would not have had bumped their prices, and book with them. Some hotels even has this thing called GENIUS DISCOUNT (like hotel partnering with booking.com gives us discount).
