Wow, that guy sounds like a douche!! I've never bought anything from UO, and don't think I will now ever. What an awful sounding person! And the clothes sound terrible too, so thanks for that :)
I don't know anything about the founder (http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/hayne.asp suggests he is probably unsavoury, but I imagine lots of billionaire business men are?) , but I have bought heaps of things from these guys before and have never had any issues with things falling apart. They sell lots of brands, some well known, others in-house brands, and I imagine the quality varies accordingly.
I bought a coat, a hat and a skivvy. Quality was quite good, think Myer not Kmart. Sizing was more true to Aussie sizes than the usualy giant sizes from place like Lands End or Old Navy. I have heard the founder is a dick too, but if you decide not to support arseholes in business, you end up with very, very few choices.

American version of Cotton On…. Or is Cotton On the Australian version of Urban Outfitters?
Neither…Cotton On stocks nothing that looks good (at least in the men's section)
When did Cotton On start selling Nike and Vans?
There are item(s) in your cart that cannot be shipped to Australia. Please return to your shopping cart and remove them before proceeding through checkout.
No Nike or Vans shipping ?
-_-Not sure about Nikes, but I know Vans and Levis both don't ship. It's a shame cause they are so cheap
Nike is OK i just bought some Air Max the other day. Vans are a no go unfortunately. I used to buy a new pair of vans every couple of months as they were so cheap.
alot of things cant ship to australia, makes UO pretty useless. and their prices are high as well.
I went to a few if the stores while I was in the states. They are pretty much like general pants.
The gear I've bought has been excellent quality and the price is awesome (as is anything in America compared to here). Eg asics tigers for $50, Nike Cortez for $60, good tshirts for $9.
Can't go wrong.
B-pop
They have pretty awesome selvage denim.
I'd never buy a thing from urban outfitters, I did once and everything was ruined within a few uses. Cotton cardigans stretched out really bizarrely, stockings tore easily and earrings fell off the backs (only held together with glue!)
Later I learned that the founder is a gigantic homophobe who, in an interview, mocked the fact so many gay people buy his products when he contributes that money to anti-gay campaigns. They ALSO steal the designs of independent etsy users without credit or compensation. Worst company ever.
