Buy Passata instead, fry up some onions, add your mince, herbs and garlic, add Passata, simmer to reduce and enjoy over pasta or zoodles. Delicious with no added sugar.

Sometimes you don't want that much sauce (or are lazy!). That said I always use passata (cheap) but bought a few bottles of these from woolies for a rainy lazy day.

Also there's 1/2 price carbonara on special at woolies as well.

      • +1

If you are lazy buy the pasta sauce at Aldi. It isn't full of corn starch like this slop.

        • +1

          Which one?

          • +3

@gadget: Casa Barelli brand. Made in italy.

They also had Barilla on sale last time I was there - so I suspect Barilla makes the generic for them too

    • +3

Probably better to do all that in a pressure cooker, then pressure cook for 10-15 mins

I do a sofrito (celery, onions and carrot), but actually puree it first to make it more kid friendly

Hello Fresh taught me to use Passata. I still use Dolmio for some things though but I tend to add my own onions and garlic now too - hmm

    • +1

100% this. Tinned tomatoes (proper italian ones) go great too especially if you have a stick blender. Also works as a pizza sauce!

    • +1

Or tomato paste and a can of crushed tomatoes works good too, very economical too.

    • +6

I think you are missing the point the reason people buy this is because they don't have the time or are lazy and just want to cook something as fast as possible.

Why don't you make fresh sauce from tomatoes instead of using Passata it will taste better and will be healthier.

Suggesting avoiding products with unnecessary added sugar.

    • +1

I tried making homemade bolognese once. It tasted very bland. Maybe it was missing sugar?

      • +1

Needs more salt than many realise. Also stock, beef my pref.

    • +1

Just looked up this 'Passata',is it the Mutti product? Love their tinned tomatoes.

Pasta sauce is pretty overrated, even then I use it as well as tin of tomatoes but not that necessary if got the other ingredients. Lot of salt in those. Aldi pasta sauce always $1.39, same crap as dolmio pretty much.

Thanks OP! Saves me a trip down to carry those Dolmio sauces back from my shopping trip

    Cheap but nasty

  • The spicy peppers is decent but the rest better alternatives.

    • The best dolmio flavour has always been the one with basil mentioned in the name

  • +4

Ewwwwww, may as well slush out a can of SPC 'spaghetti'.

Make a sofritto, chop a tomato, when it's near cooked add pasta and water, add more water until the sauce is the consistency you want and pasta is all dente.

One pan, 15 min, better for you and cheaper.

    This stuff is just awful.

  • Now we need some deals on mince and frozen mix veg…….PLEASE!!!

    • We're buying blade roast @ 16/kg and using our mincer.
Cheaper than mince is quite a landmark in culinary consumerism. Unless you're into "exotic cuts".

  • The bolognese tastes really bad. So sour and bitter.

    • Which brands taste better?

      • Mutti, barilla, even leggos

  • +1

Got too many in the shelve from last promo. Good price!

  • Personally for a quick and easy spag bol meal I like the Essentials Traditional Pasta Sauce 700g https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/839703/ess… It's better than the Dolmio stuff

How do you know when an Italian woman is menstruating? When her husband has the Dolmio grin

    • +3

As I was reading this I was eating spaghetti 🍝 now I have spaghetti coming out my nose.

      • +1

        From laughing or from vomiting?

  • Currently in the middle of making a four hour bolognese but I still don't mind the red wine one when I cbf.

    • Insert The Magic Begins in The Third Hour

      or some foodie w@nk.

  • This stuff tasted much better when they were using Australian ingredients.

  • +1

    Some varieties back in stock.

  • Gonna give the spicy peppers 🌶 a try before they're all gone.

  • How hard is it to make your own sauce

    • +1

Pretty easy, you just pour out the Dolmio and heat, maybe stir a little if you're feeling adventurous

      • That's not making your own.

The Aldi one is always $1.39, much the same crap.

  • Can't subscribe and save for the spicy

  • This stuff is only good for pizza base sauce

    • I use leggos pizza sauce, or the aldi stuff. Really good.

You could also boil and blend San Marzano tomatoes and add a little salt.

Or for white sauce it's simple fresh grated parmigiano reggiano with water.

  • Tomato, Onion & Garlic
    Bolognese

    Available again, no minimum.

  • Jesus the packaging is out of control, not very environmentally friendly. The ALDI shit is fine for $1.39 every day.
