Great price and over 2gb data - sweet!

    • Just got back from Virgin store in Hurstville had two months left on my contract for my GS1 and they upgraded me to this plan with the GS3 .. it was quick and easy and i have a phone with 2.25Gbs of download per month without waiting for postage .. awesome!!! :) ( they only had the white ones in stock .. no ETA on the blue.. oh well its still a very nice looking phone in white indeed )

      • +1

Yeah white is crappy and the only other colour is blue?? I want black like my sgs1 and sgs2.

A mate of mine is 1 month away from contract end with optus and they cold called him today to offer him an early contract end and upgrade to the sgs3. I reckon all the networks would be doing similar to this to lock people in to a new cycle.

        I want black :S

        • +1

The Blue looks very Black, but in line with the luminous nature theme of Sammy. The white is actually Pearl, so they both are really cool !

  • Nice, any other colour?

      • +2

pointless rhetoric joedingy, how about giving a few good examples to state your case of what you think are actually pretty phones with powerful specs like the S3 and at this price point.

you know, make your post actually constructive?

      • Because 'it is ugly' is subjective.

  • +1

Good deal, but vodafone is a 12 month contract, in which you can just go with live connected afterwards. But the call and data value for vodafone's $29 plan is horrible.

    • This is actually a very good deal:

      1. All virgin's postpaid caps include INTERNATIONAL CALLS.

      2. 2.25G Data vs 1.5G on LC.

      3. LC's SIM alone costs you $20

      4. Your contract normally ends 3 months earlier if you re-sign with them.

      5. They have a certain level of customer support (IMO it's pretty good).

      • +1

4.Your contract normally ends 3 months earlier if you re-sign with them.

        not on Virgin Mobile.

i was having the post plan with Virgin, for the ealier temination or renew, i need pay off the handset fee.

        • maybe not 3 mths but i got offered in 1 mth before to re-sign. maybe can try 2mths next time!

        • of course you need to pay off the handset fee… the early termination is for the mobile plan, not the phone. it's 2 different things.

i would be surprised if they want you to pay up the remaining 3 mths contract though.

        • Hey it's been changed recently after you have completed 21 months you will be able to upgrade. :) Only catch is you have to make the rep instore call up to put it through
          .

      • +1

        $10.99 x 24 = $264+$20 sim for liveconnected

Take that from the total cost of the deal, leaves you with $892.

If we assume that right now the phone can be purchased outright for $700 (I don't know whether or not this is true) then you'd have to weigh up the $200 extra cost vs international calls and some data.

In my view, this is a "fairly" good deal right now, but in e.g. 3 months this phone will likely be available for $550 to $600 outright.

Not that I will buy one, because I have a galaxy note and it is better than the s3.

        • Not quite right, LC have upped plan prices so the plan is now $12 p/m = $288 + 20
Cheapest price for the S3 atm seems to be $784 delivered
Putting the total cost at $1092, so it works out only $80 cheaper than this plan.

        • +1

first of all, still CHEAPER. secondly, you are not LOCKed in with virgin.

but actually i do want to try virgin. i am very sick of vodafone! fortunately my 12mth contract with vodaphone on a SGS2 will finally expire in the winter…

  • +2

how is this a bargain? normal price??

    • It seems pretty well priced for the latest phone, if I recall right the OneX started at $59/m. The extra 2Gb is the icing on the deal cake :)

    • 2GB data is what makes this plan attractive, which is a limited time offer (only till 1st of July).

  • +2

    crazy johns deal is better:

    $10 + $50 handset repayments (12 months) = $780 minimum cost

    $80 credit, 200mb + unlimited vodafone, 3, CJs

    • It's $15/month + $50 handset repayments (12 months) = $780 minimum cost

      • yep- correct.

slightly better than vodafone's plan $29 + 40 ($69) - but not as much credit.

very competitive with cheapest unlocked so far for Aussie stock - DS $747

    • +4

It depends what you want though. Its better if you just want the handset as cheap as possible BUT its not better if you are the type of user who wants to use the plan for calls and data (unless you are a very light user).

      Crazy John $15 Plan - $80 calls/ 400Mb data
      Virgin $29 Plan - $450 calls/ 2250Mb data

      • +2

I am a light user for phone calls but like to have data. I have been fine with 250mb a month on iphone 3g, but with a new phone i would use it more and would like 1gb maybe. though 400mb with vodafone, if i can get it on a 12month plan is not bad.

        • +1

I always like to have quite a buffer on my data because I know how much Virgin stings you for excess data! With streaming radio, Youtube, tethering and now Spotify its easy to chew some data!

        • +3

totally each to their own. my current plan with vodaphone gives me 250mb each month. on average i only use about 100mb. two reasons:1.i have wifi at home and office, 2. vodaphone sucks.

        • +1

very much agreed on reason number 2

      • Thats why i went the virgin plan!! .. plus saved time with postage by buying it in store

    • in virign international calls included within the CAP

      • Yes - check the website for rates…

  • +1

Are there any other company out there offers 12 months plan like Vodafone?

    • +1

Crazy John's, as wbeer mentioned in the post before yours.

  • +1

Had a play in Voda store. Nice phone. White looks fine.

  • Is a phone really needs Quad Core?

    • Never mind…

    • +7

About as much as car needs a 6.0L V8…

    • +1

if you have to ask, you can't afford it.. ;)

    • +2

Do we need 4 cores ? Right now - NO, In 12 months - Maybe, In 24 months - Yes.

But I'm pretty sure 1GB of RAM will severely bottleneck this phone far before we begin to see any real advantage of having 4 cores in daily activities. IMO the only people who could benefit are the hard core mobile gamers.

      • That's my point, lock into a contract for 24 months but no use of the four cores?

Who know what will happen in 12 months?

        • In 12 months just sell it. Add few hundred bucks, and still enjoy the data allowance on this. No carriers atm would give you 2.25GB a month

  • Just got this deal today. They waived the termination fee as I was 21 months into my old plan with them. Great deal!

Important to note that you still have to pay the $20 phone repayment even if you upgrade to a higher plan though.

    • SAME here… i was 22 months into my old plan! :) love this new SG3 phone it rocks

      • Hey, out of curiosity what are you getting on your speedtests? I seem to be getting under 1mbps download whereas on my Galaxy S i9000 I was getting around 3-5mpbps. Just wanted to know if you were experiencing something similar?

  • the Virgin network works with optus so reception will be just as bad as…. well optus.

    • Better than voda though :)

      • Yes better voda but will you pay $8x a month with Telstra?

        • your point is?

        • +1

Telstra is the best but very expensive, Optus is second and better than voda.

        • +2

Nonononono. Telstra is the least worst. The fact that Vodafone is about as reliable as an Alfa Romeo hides the fact that Telstra is still terrible, just that it's the least terrible.

        • What is so bad about Telstra? In the south west at least I find them to be great…

        • Um… No its not better than Voda the Vodafone networks work in many more areas while optus has black areas and works only til 3g Voda has its 3.5g (HSDPA) networks

  • +1

I saw this deal today spoke to Vodafone they could not match. However I got 950MB (with the $5 750MB data pack free of charge) same plan $29+$20

Has 850Mhz network better than Virgin's. I heard Optus network is pretty bad on 3G you can't use up all the 2GB anyway. I get better speeds on 850 Vodafone network than 2100 like Virgin

  • +2

    NO DEAL

For $11/ Month, you could go on LiveConnected Tribe 11 plan which has roughly the same amount of credit ($500) and a little bit less data (1.5GB)

However, the LC Tribe 11 plan is more than twice as cheap, there is no lock in contract and you're not stuck on a conctract for two years.

    Galaxy S III - $728/ 24 = $30.3/ mo

    GS3 - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71334

    LiveConnected Plan - $11/ Month

    TOTAL = $41/mo opposed to paying $49/mo

Over 24 months, you'll be paying an extra $200, you'll be stuck on a plan, paying off a phone, and paying an extra $19/mo for a plan that has less credit and a bit more data…

    • +1

xDEFiNE, you nailed the target again. :)

      • +3

        tribe 11 is removed.
it is now called medium series 1 11.99

        • +1

If you're already on Tribe 11 you can continue to use it though. ;)

    • +2

      Exact numbers:

      • Virginmobile = $49 x 24 = $1176
      • Outright Phone + LC = 728 + ($11.99 x 24 + 20) = $1035
      • Difference = $140 ($5.80 per month)

But for that you get 24 months local warranty (12 months manufacturer + 12 months from virgin) opposed to sending back your phone to topbuy or whoever you got it from to claim their questionable 12 month warranty. You also get international calls included in the cap + free voicemail + unlimited calls to virgin numbers + 750MB more data. Virgin plan can be a much better option for those who want international calls and those who have friends and family on virgin mobile.

      • -3

for those who want intetnational calls, they can use the net.many ppl choose to turn off voicemail. u really have so much to talk to people?

personally, this plan is not too bad.but open ur mind, xdefine gave a very good example.

        • If you compare Telstra, Vodafone, Optus, and Virgin mobile plans, you can clearly see that this plan is by far the best, therefore I believe this is a good deal for anyone wanting a S3 with a reasonably good data/voice plan.

Using VOIP on a mobile phone for international calls is not always feasible. And the amount of call credit someone needs entirely depends on that person. $450 is not much; on average you can make 10mins of voice calls and send 10 texts per day with that(much less if you also consider international calls/texts).

Xdefine's suggestion is not bad, but I don't think you can directly compare a grey import from an unknown online retailer against one from a local carrier with 24 months warranty.F.Y.I: Average grey import price at a known online retailer (i.e Kogan or Mobicity) is around $800. Besides not everyone has $800 laying around to spend on a phone nor want to spend that much money on a grey import.

    • +2

But you are talking about out of pocket $800.

We all know outright phone plus liveconnect is cheaper and the phone companies also know, that is why they want us to sign a 24 months contract to pay them more and keep using them.

Mainly for those do not want to pay out of pocket.

    • +1

i think if you use the cost from a DSE outright, it may be a better picture.. apples to apples.

the only thing people didn't realise is from a 24 mth contract, it's like a 0% installment plan for 24 months. if you think it like that… its actually worth it.

      • Yeah if you just think about 20x24=480 for the phone it is a bargain.

Because some people is paying $30 a month anyway prepaid to optus.

    • +2

I can't see this as being correct, please clarify. Since I and any new users to Live Connected cannot get the Tribe 11 deal, you can't count that.

The closest deal Live Connected offer is the M plan which is $12 a month, giving $500 of calls, 1.5Gb of data and no texts included.

      Live Connected
      $12 x 24 months = $288
      + $20 Connection = $308
      + $728 Unlocked SGIII = $1036
      / 24 Months = $43.60 a month

      Pro's:
An unlocked SGIII with no contract
$50 of more calls and texts and at a better rate

      Con's:
Pay $760 up front before use
700 Mb less data each month

      Virgins deal:
      $49 x 24 = $1176

      Pro's:
      Dealing with one company
700 Mb more data (16.5 Gb over 24 months)

      Con's:
You and your phone is locked to Virgin
Total additional cost at end of 24 months is $140
Call rate per minute is more expensive by 10%

I would say that the Virgin Mobile deal is a bargin if you like more data and care less for calls/texts. They both use the Optus network and both warranties are Australian.

    • +2

      a bit more data

seem like an understatement, 750 mb is 50% more data while $50 only 10% more credit. Bias much?

    • you forgot to calculate interest for the outright price of the phone vs. paying monthly

  • Just upgraded my current Virgin account to get this phone. Amazing phone. I love Virgin mainly because of the international calls included in their cap plans.

  • +2

Just wanted to let people know that the virgin big caps are different then the old (think they were called smart) caps. My wife upgraded from a 45 smart cup to a 49 big cup (a while ago) and she now constantly goes over her credit limit where before she was never even close. Reason for this is that they almost doubled the call rates… So while it sounds good to have $450 it runs out really fast. As an example I use my phone allot more than her (on Telstra) and never even come cost to my credit limit (same $450).

Point is: don't just compare cap value, compare price per minute and flagfall. Also important if calls are timed every 30s or every min.
Last time we scoured her bill we found out she was paying like a $1.50 out of the cap everyeverytimeone she made a call, even if she hang up as soon as she reaches voicemail.

I have called virgin and they will not switch us over to the newer big caps (even if we pay more), unless we pay the exit fee which I'd really dear at $39 pm.

    • Sorry for the spelling, my phone does not let me fix it… :-(

    • Virgin: 99c/min + 40c call connection
      Vodafone: 98c/min + 40c flagfall
      Telstra: 90c/min + 35c call connection
      Optus: 90c/min + 35c flagfall
      Live Connected: 90c/min + 35c flagfall

Is connection and flagfall the same? I don't know. Virgin is the most expensive out of the lot, by 10c per min and additional 5c per connection over the cheapest! Tsk tsk!

      • I think so. Flagfall is the fee you get hit with when the call begins, regardless of what happens, connection sounds like the same thing.

Disclaimer: I could be wrong here.

      • I believe connection and flagfall are the same.

From the numbers you posted it works out that Virgin is 12% more expensive (i.e. you pay 12% more out of your cap for the same value). This needs to be compared to how much cap you get for the same money.
Have you checked SMS rates? I think they are also more expensive there…

All in all they make it very hard to understand and compare what you are getting, which I believe is the point.

  • Mine is easy… S3 - $730 outright and after buy this phone I can claim salary sacrifice which I may get 40% back. Plan i already have Bigcap $19 ($450 calls + 2GB data) with virgin. I am happy with this deal :)

    • u can salary sacrifice mobile phone? Are you serious? I thought the ATO has removed all ICT equipment from salary sacrifice?

    • On what basis can you salary sacrifice a phone?

      • You need to buy it outright, employer must agree to do it (many don't) and it must be primarily for work purposes. It is limited to one per year per employee.

By doing so, the cost comes out of your pre-tax salary, reducing the base that withholding is calculated on.

        • Yes Simb18. You are correct. My MNC company is providing Salary sacrifice for Mobiles if i purchase outright and not on plan. I knew ATO removed all Mobile from salary sacrifice however that will applicable only as per your company policy.

      • By doing salary sacrifice you may lose your 9% employer super contribution which you will have to take into account.

        • This shouldn't happen post 1 July 2008, the Government changed the definition on what the 9% needs to be paid on. I emphasis shouldn't because I still see it happen in reality.

Here's the def. from the ato site (http://www.ato.gov.au/super/content.aspx?doc=/content/39205.…)

From 1 July 2008, you must use ordinary time earnings, as defined in the Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992, to calculate the minimum super guarantee contributions required for your eligible employees. This ensures all eligible employees are treated the same for super guarantee purposes.

Ordinary time earnings (OTE) are generally what your employees earn for their ordinary hours of work, including:

          over-award payments
          certain bonuses
          commissions
          shift-loading
          certain allowances.

  • Plus it also should come with 50Gb of Dropbox space…. if only for two years…. (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Dropbox-partnership-will-give…)

  • Thanks for this, was going to jump on the Vodafone 12 month plan initially, but have been with them for 4 years now and after having a play with my brother and gfs phones both on the Optus network, their phones seemed to get better faster mobile internet connection for me. So now I'm with Virgin.

  • Please be warned. I've just had a horrible experience with incompetent Virgin "customer service" and technical support when I couldn't get a data connection on my smartphone. They fumble around, ask you to change valid settings, reset the phone etc. until they give up. In the process, they completely disabled my mobile service then told me it would be another 10 days for technical support to respond to an issue, not necessarily fix it. This is their normal period you may expect to wait for your basic services to be restored. They send you emails saying the problem is resolved when it is not. They don't test before deciding an issue is fixed. I only signed up on the $29 plan 2 weeks ago with $5/month for a Galaxy S2 and I'll be using the ombudsman to get away ASAP.

    • As it looks like you signed up only to complain about Virgin Mobile I will take your comment with a grain of salt…
