[Solved] Haggling/Negotiating Strategies to Get Best Price for 65" TV Purchase?

Hi all. First, I want to apologise in advance for asking about what must be a very common topic.

I'm looking to buy a 65" TV for my grandfather who is in his 80s.
I regrettably missed all the amazing deals from last week, and I'm anxious to set a new one up for him soon as possible.
I accept I missed the past deals, but I do want to get the best deal possible. I am a young person with little disposable income, and I have never purchased a TV before.

I'm considering either an OLED or Neo QLED:
- Samsung 65" QN800B 8K Neo QLED Smart TV 2022 - $3,495
- LG C1 65" 4K SMART SELF-LIT OLED TV W/ AI THINQ OLED65C1PTB - $3,495
These are the best base prices I can find online via the most common retailers in NSW.

His favourite thing to do is watch nature and animal documentaries, and old-timey movies.

Can I please ask for your advice on:
1. What can I do to bring the price down as low as possible? Should I visit a store in-person and try and get a discount? If so, what should I say?
2. Is it worth calling to ask if they can take pity on me and give me a price comparable to some of the recently listed deals? E.g. a week ago the LG C1 TV was going for ~$3000.

Many thanks for your help.

Definitely go in store. If you can find a cheaper price elsewhere try and have that loaded on the phone and show them you can get the tv for X price at X place. Ask if they will beat it? If so then say how about a bit better than that for cash. Its what I have done and have always got a bit better, sometimes a few hundred or more.

    • Thank you very much for your advice! I'll arm myself with a few screenshots/websites and see what I can haggle.

While yes he probably doesnt need an amazing tv why not give him something nice to enjoy documentaries on :) I'm guessing he likes David Attenborough shows like Planet Earth? Looks amazing on a great 4k tv.

Before going into store check their price beat/match conditions on their web site as some do not and others like Hardly Normal only price match if it does not go below their "store price" which never works out to be near the cheaper places.

Some say one thing and then you get there and they say something else, so take a copy of the price beat/match conditions if you think that the cheaper price you found can be matched just in case they try to get out of it.

With due respect to your grandfather, does he really need a $3,500 TV for documentaries and old movies?

    • +1

Eh let him enjoy the twilight years in tv style!

      • +2

Thank you. This is my reasoning exactly. He's old and he has worked in physical jobs his entire life. Also, this is the only activity we can enjoy together.

        • Just don't tell him the price or he will have a heart attack

    • +1

I'd somewhat agree with that… Consider the quality and source of the content he is watching.
e.g. "Old-timey movies" are very likely to be below 720p. Where are the docos from? Are they 4k content?
Be aware, there's very little 8K content.
And if he has any form of age degenerated eyesight problems, he's unlikely to get any benefit from 8k unless he's sitting very close.
Consider something for around $1.5K and he'll still love it! And you can save the time and effort and stress.

Even better, tell him it's the latest and greatest 8k and charge him $3500, but buy an EKO 65in from BigW @$500 - $3k profit - justify it to yourself by saying fuel prices are going up and you transported it to him :P

Besides this being a real dirt bag thing to do to your grandfather the cost is coming out of the grandsons pocket and made no mention of the grandad giving him any of it back.

This is a gift. I have no intention of scalping from someone I love and care about, and nor would I want to do this to a stranger.
Elder abuse is deeply problematic and kind of a sick thing to joke about. Sadly, there are likely lots of people who do think like this and who do act on it.

Watching nature shows like Planet Earth on a great quality tv really makes a difference. Big fans of those kinds of shows in our house with the kids. Went from a Kogan 65" to a 75" Sony X90J and the difference was huge.

  • Should I visit a store in-person and try and get a discount? If so, what should I say?

    What's the best price?

I am a young person with little disposable income

buying a 3.5k top of the line 65" tv..

And they say we have inflationary and economic problems … clearly they are mistaken.

    • -1

We do have inflationary and economic problems. As it stands, I do have limited disposable income right now. However, I'm going to start a 6-figure salary job next month after being underemployed entire career. I have savings, and for the first time, an opportunity to buy something new that will bring joy to someone I love and care for. Please don't make assumptions on a person's spending habits or financial literacy based on a posting asking for advice.

I saw 80s and oled and laughed, each to their own I suppose, just go in ask say the C1 was $3k last week and if they can do the same price or get close it it as they know you will be keen since you've been tracking the price, Can't be that hard to ask.. or check Goodguys commercial as a benchmark if they still stock them

    • Thanks! This is my next step.

All good let us know how you go !!

You can get a 65" for $699 at Jb

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/ffalcon-65uf3-65-4k-ultra…

That would save you quite a bit being a "young person with little disposable income".

Aldi have a 55" 4K for $569 on Saturday. This is a way better buy for your grandfather and if he does not like it you can return (conditions apply), which you cannot do with any other store that I am aware of.

At 80 years old his eye sight will not be as good as yours, so 8K or OLED IMHO are way over the top and you are better saving the money and spend it on other things he need. An example of this is a big button remote control and a TV streaming service that has the shows he watches.

If you want to spend the money then take him into a store that has them and see which one he likes better and then see if the store price matches. I would pay for the delivery and installation so you do not have any issues with a damaged screen that can be blamed on you.

    • +1

This is a gift. I want to give him the best so he can enjoy his favourite activity, and so I can also enjoy it with him. I plan on paying for his streaming services etc. and have budgeted that in already. A big button remote is a great idea however. Thanks.

Disney+ has a National geographic channel that he would love!

And a decent new receiver to go with it so he can use the receiver for AM/FM and as an amp for surround sound.
And remote LED lights for the lounge room so the lighting can be adjusted when you are watching the TV.
And a recycling lounge chair for him in his old age if you have not already bought him one.
And a coffee pod machine he can use for making coffee in the morning while watching the news on the TV.

  • Like the comments above, get the biggest, cheapest TV you can find. Your grandfathers eyes won't be able to tell the difference between fine HDR colour gradients, but he can see that the screen covers most of the wall and be able to read the news bars without his glasses. Unless this TV is really for you and grandfather is the excuse?

    • +1

I just want to get him the best. He has great eyesight for his age. He lives alone, but I do intend to spend more time with him and watch shows with him.

      • Legit he doesn't care.

Any TV over 1 k is going to be a huge improvement.

You don't need to go to 3k but hey it's your money.

  • +1

Spend $1500 on a decent 65" TV and then spend $2k on outings/activities to do with your grandfather.
If you're going to spend time with him ("but I do intend to spend more time") I guarantee he will get more enjoyment from that, as opposed to a slightly higher quality tv display.

No one gets to the end of their life and wishes their grand kid had just bought them a slightly better tv.

    I’d recommend going in store.

Go into somewhere like JB and just ask the question “what’s the best you can do?”. It’s sometimes quite surprising what the staff can get for you.

    • Or just say they were $3k last week can you still do that price since I was working all last weekend (lies) or how close can you get ? Etc

Sign up to ebayplus. Use code PLRANGE3 for 10% off. These are direct from Sony.

You really don't need 8K or OLED, even with great eyesight. Its negligible difference will a good Full Array LED.

He's after a 65" so you offer a 85" or 75" 🤣 he's told you what he wants, he wants something nice for his old man..

      • -1

Third one down is 65". Retails for $1,795.00 but can be had here for $1,373.40

If 65" was landed on for budget then bigger is better for an older person. They are good alternitive options. I'm sure your bargain suggestions have been fantastic, I just can't seem to see anything other than - gO aNd AsK fOr a gOoD pRice.

OP also said grandfather. Not old man. Maybe deal with your own comprehension issues first.

        • I Might as well put an eBay link of a car…you've been so helpful 🥴 sorry I got wrong who he was buying it for I guess since it's such a big deal to you, maybe I'll post a 32" for him to help and go against what he wants to buy.. thanks bro

Lol so you neg every comment of mine man how old are you haha not a happydude at all very childish
