Quick Question about Dashcam Crash

Because of the horror stories on this forum I have put a dashcam in both cars.

If I got in a crash I want to be confident of what to do so I don't ruin the footage and capture it properly.

Do you just pull the sim card out after the crash? The latest moments are always saving?

Depends on your dashcam. Some are always recording but will only save the last X seconds when it detects a crash or a bump. You can also trigger it by pressing a button on the dashcam. You'll notice on many dashcam vids on YouTube a distinct chime after an accident is captured and occasionally the dashcam being slightly moved as someone manually triggers it when they are recording a 3rd party crash.

If you are in a crash just make sure a chime has gone off but it's worth also manually pressing it out of caution.

Many DashCam’s have a ‘save’ feature where it protects the last XX seconds of footage. Some activated by a button, some by g-force.

If you watch some of the footage from DCOA on YouTube you’ll often see just after an incident where the driver has just been a witness and not involved the camera shakes a bit and there is a rustle and a beep indicating the driver has pressed a button.

      That channel is hilarious.

.>driving down some notoriously sh!tty road that someone in the comments will immediately recognise
.>music blaring but also clipped at random parts in the vid so DCOA doesn't get a DCMA
.>idiot driver starts doing something dangerous
.>"Oi look at this absolute yobbo, what are you doing c**&t? What a mad unit"
.>situation turns hilarious as idiot driver ups the ante
.>"Ooh, dashcam, dashcam! This is great!"
.>"Doot doot!" chime as the recorder fiddles with his camera
.>one of the other cars was an undercover cop the entire time and fires up the roof
.>"Oooooooooooooooh! You are f@&ked mate! Get absolutely f*&ked! Serves you right! Hahaha!"
      .>recorder cackles like a madman
.>next clip, start from the top

  • Save a second copy to your phone if your dashcam has Wifi pairing like the Viofos.

Never heard of dash cams with Sim cards……..think you mean SD card that would store the video files.

OP, record with dashcam then see how you can save the file to computer?

    Its like backups. Test often.

Also what should you do if you're at fault, should you delete the footage?

    • +2

      Your footage. Your choice

    • +4

And that's when you press the format button

    • +1

      Yes.

    • Depends how 'at fault' you were.

I imagine in some cases it could actually prevent you from being charged with something more serious.

    • Make an OzBargain post and provide an MS Paint diagram

  • OP - yes, remove the sd card or remove power from the device

Be careful with the Viofo. I was almost in an accident, went to hit the big orange emergency button (to save the video to be sure) and accidentally hit another button in the adrenaline which deleted the footage. Now I know not to touch the dashcam at all because any hard braking / crash will automatically save that video

    • how did you manage that? i've hit it plenty of times but never managed to delete the footage by accident (a129 plus)

      • I honestly don't know what happened. I had braked hard, the dashcam beeped to let me know it was saving, and then I went to hit the button anyway (I didn't trust it). Accidentally hit the mic or window button on the way to the orange button and when I went to check the footage, that 1min of footage for front and back was missing. I could see everything before and after the incident. It was really weird

        • Not sure if this will help but I think the saved footage goes into a different folder than all the rolling footage, so just double check every folder on the SD card…

    • The g sensor will sense accidents but some are sensitive and will activate if you go over a tall speed bump too quickly

I have a DOD and also learnt not to touch it after an accident. I pressed the yellow save button and it ended up corrupting just that file. The files before were all ok.

So my advice, is to remove the mirco SD card once you return home and find the footage you need.

  • Press stop and pull Sim out.

I had an incident on Saturday, and discovered my Viofo had not ben recording since 16/4

    • My Viofo A119 V3 frequently stops recording while I am driving for no apparent reason. I know when it stops because the record button flashes and the device beeps constantly. It happened daily with a Samsung Evo Plus 128 GB card but is now every few days with the same brand 64 GB card. Pulling the power cord from the device and then reinserting it fixes the issue. It will be just my luck that an incident occurs while the device isn't recording 😕

Is funny I've often wondered how often folks that have a dashcam and ARE AT FAULT suddenly 'realise' that their dashcam didn't have an SD card in it or was 'faulty'. Bet it happens a lot.

Of course, you are not going to incriminate yourself 😊
Having said that, I recently responded to an appeal by police for dashcam video in the vicinity of a serious crime which occurred in Adelaide.
I was driving past the scene at the time and on reviewing the video, I realised that I was exceeding the speed limit by 5 km/hr.
The police were only interested in my dashcam video which provided crucial evidence of the crime. Apparently, they don't regard the speed data on dashcam video as accurate and in SA won't accept it if you are trying to challenge a speeding fine.

Of course not - you'd not furnish the dashcam footage for that. I mean OBVIOUSLY if you f-ed up and caused the damage to someone else's property you'd own up to it anyway. ;-)

Dunno if its the mild Aspergers I have but when I f-up(which is often), I try to own up for it - as I'm weird and I think it's logical - seems most other folks if they can get away with it they will, despite it possibly significantly impacting some other bastard minding their own business.

But ask anyone who knows me and I'm the f-ed up one. :-/
PS. Not directed @Gazza52 is just society at large :-)
