Hellofresh Getting Worse - Can They Stay in Business?

I get a box regularly for next to nothing, i'd never pay full price.

the quality of veggies has always been inconsistent and with "supply chain issues" there has been more and more substitutions.

these days they don't even offer much variety in menu choices to start with and then there's substitutions on top of that.

don't see how they're going to stay afloat?

this is probably the reason they'll go bust

As the largest meal kit seller in the USA, and global sales of around $A10 billion I reckon they will be around for a while to come

I tried Hellofresh. They sometimes don't ship ingredients such as garlic or ship 2 cloves of garlic and the 5 meals require a total of 6 cloves.

Cheaper to just get it from supermarket anyway.

    • +2

They give you a bulb now, so you should have plenty left over after all meals are made

      • I have actually so much garlic in my freezer now, or I just give bulbs away to friends every few weeks. It’s overflowing in the boxes now!

As someone with depression who is also immunocompromised, there is a massive struggle associated with having to plan my meals and actually go into the supermarket to get the ingredients (both mental struggle and covid concerns).

HelloFresh is the difference between me eating and not.

And as OP said, most weeks there is a discount, so it actually works out to be pretty well priced. And at least they send you alternatives rather than having empty shelves to look at.

That's very insightful as to how the service is used.

I didn’t realise how much I needed it until I got offered a free box late last year.

Eating better and eating balanced meals, as opposed to just cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner, has helped me sleep better. And the balance of nutrients and better sleep have helped improve some of my depression symptoms compared to where I was a year ago.

It has literally changed my life.

          • @jjjaar: Good luck with everything.

Try Marley spoon/dinnerly, better stuff than hello fresh/everyplate in my experience.

            • @brendanm: Cheers.

I went through the freebies of all of them earlier in the year. Everyplate was difficult because it wasn’t all bagged by recipe - Turns out that part is actually super important for me! Though I did love the recipes.

Still have accounts with all though and jump to the others occasionally, when the recipes are better.

          • @jjjaar: Same. Makes a huge difference we aren't just paying for the groceries we get, we pay for the incredible convenience of having nice simple varied recipes. On my own it saves me a lot in food going off as well! Bit annoyed with quality and logistics sometimes, I'm using Dinnerly and I've gone hungry once or twice. But I will stick with them.

I didn't really appreciate this until I checked in on my elderly neighbour living with his elderly wife and middle aged daughter with a slight disability, and saw tonnes of these types of boxes (Marley Spoon) on their porch. No doubt something that helped them a lot, especially during lockdown.

I've never tried any of these boxes so didn't appreciate the different need for it.

"Cheaper to just get it from supermarket anyway"

Uh… Yeah…no duh Sherlock. Hello fresh and meal kits are not about being cheap. It's a convenience thing

And you wonder why they're getting worse?

    • -5

      no

  • Maybe they know you never pay full price and give you exactly what you've paid for.

    • +1

They're not going to waste time doing that.

    • nah they send an email when they know that

Unfortunately, our records show that you already have a HelloFresh subscription, and our vouchers are only valid once per account holder.

    A) you don’t want them to stay afloat.

    B) you want them to stay afloat.

    Explain yourself.

getting free food is nice but i don't care that much either way. everyone seems to have latched onto the fact i said i don't pay full price but i said that more of a disclaimer to the fact it's never been great value at list price but imo it's been getting worse.

i just don't see how offering a fixed price for a box of meals is sustainable when prices are going up, quality and availability is going down.

so i'm just curious to other peoples thoughts on this. and if anyone else has had the same experience with choice/quality.

Pay peanuts, get monkeys….. Same applies here too. If everyone is getting it on the 'cheap' they have to cut costs.

  • I am wondering if Marley Spoon are going to exit the Australian market. I've looked at my Dinnerly (MS cheaper sister brand) and can only see order for this week and next. Usually there are at least 4 weeks of menus available.

    • @st1ng When I opened the app for last nights meal there was a pop up explaining they've limited how far ahead you can pick meals in the name of reducing substitutions

They must be getting dragged over coals by Karen's regarding substitutions given how hard they've made it to find the info and now this

      • I haven't received a pop-up in the app (Android), but I've seen that they've add another week, so my comment isn't valid. Thankfully none of my recipes this week had substitutions.

    • They told me it was a technical glitch.

I hate these overpriced food box companies, hopefully they all go bankrupt to make way for something decent.

They all rely on people being lazy and paying way too much for garbage.

    • +1

Have you read the comments above. They are valued by many people.

    • If you are paying full price, they are definitely a rip off. Between two Dinnerly and two Every Plate accounts, I save roughly 20-40% of every and each box, as is the OzB way.

      make way for something decent

If something thinks they can do it cheaper, they would have by now. Every Plate and Dinnerly are the cheaper cousins of Hello Fresh and Marley Spoon already.

There's no reason for it to be more expensive when they are taking a set amount of products, buying it in bulk and giving it to customers…

Coles/Woolies can deliver the same products, using the same recipe systems for a lot cheaper, but you get to choose any meal you want.
