Opticomm Connection Drops out When It Rains, What Are My Other Options?

Hi there,

We've lived for 2 years in our unit (NSW), and our home internet is on Opticomm LBN Co. (no NBN, limited providers). Speeds are OK, but any time it rains the connection drops. With the recent rain, the service has been completely worthless for the past three weeks.

Our ISP is alright, but can't do anything really about the technical problems as it sits with their provider. From what I hear, everyone in the building has the same issues.

Any good 4g mobile connections you recommend?

We use ~500gb per month, 5g is not available.

    TIO?

  • I’d be escalating the issue.

    • ISP mentioned they've done it several times already. Their customer service has been great, but there is not much they can do. Tried to get directly to Opticomm, but they won't deal with customers directly.

      • Who is your ISP?

  • I have opticomm in Melbourne and its rock solid Gigabit speeds, and barely down outage wise hahah

Luck of the draw I guess! IMO FTTP NBN is better though

    • "when" it works, it's great. Unlimited data, good speeds, price is OK. Issue is we all experience drop-offs any time it rains. Not sure of the technical explanation…

    • im getting FTTP opticomm in a month when my neighbourhood finishes the upgrade

find out where it connects to your building and see if there is a pit or something which fills with water when it rains, if there is, try putting a cover over it / preventing water from getting in and see if that helps. i've heard similar stories about rain affecting speeds and the cause ended up being an unsealed pit where there was a connection.

    • Thanks I'll have a look at it.

    get an umbrella

  • Are you in a remote rural area?

    • No, not too far from Sydney cbd

  • I have had same issue, but then Opticomm had a some work done in our are about a year back and had no issues since.. I guess if enough people from your area complains they will do something about it..

  • As Mechz said in the first post at the top, you need to lodge a complaint with the TIO. You'll get someone specific to deal with, and they won't be able to brush the problems aside.

  • Although not an ultimate solution, could you switch to an Opticomm Service Provider that offers free 4G Backup/Failover? (eg. Telstra, iinet, Internode). That way, when your connection drops, the failover will kick in and there'll be minimal disruption.

NB: You'll likely pay more for Telstra, but you'll get a better (theoretical maximum) failover speed of 25/5 Mbps, whereas the other ISP's mentioned are 12/1 Mbps failover. This will depend however on the mobile coverage you have in your area.

    • Interesting, thanks. Telstra is not one of the providers for our building, but I'll investigate the other ones.

      • There's also rumour that Aussie BB will be offering 4G Backup soon (Optus Network I'm guessing, as it's their Mobile MVNO), but I don't believe there's been any confirmation of it going ahead, or when it will be available.

Unlikely a 4G solution would be great in an apartment

What speeds do you get through your phones while standing in your apartment?

    • 92mbps download, 27 upload on my mobile. Streaming is pretty smooth, haven't tried gaming.

  • I believe that anywhere that is provisioned by Opticomm is ONLY provisioned by Opticomm. And changing ISP within the Opticomm branch won't change the physical fault. TIO is your only real option, and all the ISP needs to do to satisfy the TIO is prove that they lodged the faults with Opticomm and that Opticomm investigated them.

So basically, you're shit outta luck.

I know that on NBN, they often have the option of upgrading to FTTP for a cost. Perhaps see if Opticomm have that option?
