  • Why do I need this opposed to 3.5mm out from my laptop?

    • +3

external dac/amps are needed for more power and they can also improve the sound quality

      • Yeah but is this even good? I know that Topping has some GOOD DACS and headphone amplifiers, but not sure about this Fosi - although i do have a BT20A-S and can't complain.. it's … it's… good.

        • it depends i wouldnt buy from fosi but some people say that some are good but it depends what model you get

          • @HaydosK: Well really it has not been reviewed at audiosciencereview.com - apart from that it could be a perfectly adequate product.. in fact i would say that it is.

            • +2

@BargainHunterJohnnyB: you're probably paying a fair bit more for a topping etc.

the reason why this one is cheap is because it lacks BT and its 'only' 192k

but really for $60 youre not going to buy better

i have the cheaper portable one and its entirely fine

its not as good as a dac say 5x the price or a big time 19" component sized preamp but it was less than $50

it blows away just about any consumer piece of crap

              • +1

@tonyjzx: I actually own a topping DAC and I do enjoy it - although i am inclined to agree with your opinion on this product being quite adequate.

I also own a Fosi BT20A-S and it's perfectly fine and sounds really hood, although not as good as my cambridge audio integrated amplifier, it's totally sufficient.

I'm surprised there are not more reviews over at ASR.com.

Regarding a lack of BT, I actually prefer no BT, since it defeats the purpose of high-res audio in the first place.

                • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: same i also dont care about bluetooth
also amir had way too many products to review a cheap dac/amp that isnt that popular

                  • @HaydosK: i'm with you guys there…

if you want BT then get a dedicated digital BT box and feed it into this

BUT realise we are the exception… people dont like extra boxes

                • @BargainHunterJohnnyB:

it defeats the purpose of high-res audio

                  Yep - it's a bit like using a "Hi-Fi" for AM reception.

I grabbed the TPA 3116 ( basic 2 channel amp] when it was last on special, and when they said "quiet", I never suspected they had done what the U.K. couldn't, and got rid of Johnson noise…

      • More power? Do you mean louder volume? I cant imagine having to turn my headphones plugged into my Mac laptop any louder. Not being facetious, I'm just trying to understand a use case for this item.

        • yes power = volume
you might not have this issue but some headphone need more power to get the volume you want

        • louder volume? I

There's also a phenomenon called "clipping" where you have a short transient loud signal that needs more power than the amplifier can deliver. With old valve amps, the grid would really heat up for a moment and sometime flash ultra-violet for a instant then return to normal - a transistor just fails to let the signal through and you get a more obviously distorted sound.
