[PC, Steam] Age of Empires IV Deluxe Edition US$18.40 (Save 77%, ~A$27.01 via PayPal) @ Green Man Gaming (Requires VPN to USA)

This is definitely a pricing error considering the Deluxe Edition is $119.95 on Steam, representing a 77% saving, the previous deal for this was over $60 more through Humble Bundle back in 2021. The Standard Edition is also more than twice the price on GMG.

This first requires a VPN to USA to allow access to the page, you can checkout through Paypal or credit card as required and a you will receive a Steam Product Key.

For those having trouble checking out. I used Nord VPN connected to USA #8857, Chrome browser and was logged into GMG with my account, checked out using Paypal. I have now bought five copies for friends and all working fine.

Happy Dealing!

      • This deal was posted on reddit too hours before this post so I assume 1000s of sales, they might be slowly refunding, I really hope not cause I paid my friend in america to buy it haha, I'll lose money since they will have to refund me excluding paypal fees.

  • You lucky bustards (the bird!)! Missed it.

Back to Aoe2 and 3 for me.

    • Definitive Edition aoe2 is still great

  • +1

Damn! Wish I has seen this! Super lucky if the game works after being redeemed and they refunded too.

  • Just got keys refunded :(

  • Is anyone else getting refunds from them? i already redeemed it though

    • I redeemed it and played for an hour and got a refund this morning….

  • Steam key just got refunded, waiting for bank.

  • Still nothing, no mention of refund for me, crossing fingers here really want to play it but cannot justify the normal price!

  • +1

Received PayPal refund email. Already redeemed, downloaded and played the game briefly. I wonder how long will it take for Steam to remove the game from my library? At that time we’d uninstall the game from computer as well I assume.

    • Same :(

      • Same

    • Just got a green man gaming email as well but no refund yet and its still in my library…

  • +2

Shocking customer service from GMG. Won't be purchasing anything from them any time soon.
At least give us some form of compensation, FFS..

  • +2

Welp, in the hope this pricing error was something we might have got around… it seems not likely.

We experienced a technical error that resulted in incorrect prices being applied to Age Of Empires IV Deluxe. As a result of this error, we are in the process of refunding and deactivating all copies of the games you purchased today.

We apologise for any disruption and inconvenience caused by this

If you have any comments, feedback, or queries, please do not hesitate to contact our customer support team who will be happy to discuss this further.

    Best Wishes
    Green Man Gaming Team

    • Yeah, just got that too. Such a shame. :(

      • +1

It seems odd that they can deactivate a key after it has been redeemed, downloaded and played….

        • +3

I was of the opinion these are all grey market keys anyway right? Surely Steam would just say, too bad so sad you sold the keys for that price, that's on you.

I am not sure of the relationship between Steam and GMG, or any other site such as CDKeys, G2A etc… but I doubt Steam actually supports them as a direct competitor to their sales.

          • @Pelicannn: If that's the case, Steam can just as easily tell GMG to go take a walk.

            • @Trance N Dance: Praying to the OzB gods that is the case. Chance of this outcome IMO though is 1/100.

          • @Pelicannn: GMG is actually an official retailer, not a gray market store

            • @BillyCool: Well then we are definitely screwed. According to their T&C:

              ERRORS
IMPORTANT: GMGL tries very hard to ensure that all information on this site is accurate. However, just occasionally, an error can occur.

              • If GMGL discovers an error that affects you, GMGL will notify you as soon as possible.
              • In those circumstances GMGL reserves the right to cancel or suspend a transaction until the error is corrected and will use all reasonable efforts to ensure the same error does not reoccur and that it is rectified as quickly as possible.
              • GMGL may cancel any Order or sale and not supply the applicable Game or Product if it is reasonable to do so (including without limitation in the event of mistake). GMGL may also change or discontinue the availability of any Games or Products at any time in its sole discretion.
              • +1

@Pelicannn: Yea I read that earlier, but it feels like it refers to orders pre-delivery, as in, you buy something and they choose to not deliver it for reasons. In this case they did supply the code already, and it's not reusable if it's redeemed, I just wonder how closely they work with Steam and if Steam would just like that replace the keys for them to resell.

                • +1

@BillyCool: Here's to hoping they don't :) FWIW I just finished the tutorial so it's still working right now. At least I can call it a free trial of the full game until they take it away. Then I can decide if it's worth the full asking price.

                • @BillyCool: It's not the first time they've had a price error and revoked the keys.

                  • @Postal Dude: Do you know what the outcome was from them? I also reddeemed and played it already. Have they historically removed games off peoples steam library?

                  • @Postal Dude: Revoking keys makes sense to me when the keys haven't been used/redeemed. I imagine if they have X copies of the game, they can request X keys from Steam and they can optionally revoke and regenerate those keys. But if a key is used, I wouldn't think Steam would be happy about it, but not sure. Fingers crossed :)

    • +2

Got it as well but I have to wonder, why deactivate the copies? Is Steam going to offer them new keys just like that to replace the ones they sold? Is that a thing?

      • +2

Unsure how that works to be honest.

I get it was a pricing error, but I wonder how much it really cost them in the end in losses?

        • +2

All we can hope is that they forget to deactivate some of the copies, like that free year of Binge/Kayo/Flash.

  • +1

I've never heard of a steam game being deactivated.

  • Received the email ~7 hours ago at 1am, but haven't had the game revoked on steam yet. I wonder if regional regulations affect who they can and can't pull the game for? I've seen loads of people on Reddit already have their copies nixed, so I'm hopeful that aus got missed on the pass.

    • I also got that email about the same amount of time ago, game is still in my library, no refund either. It seems none of us here who activated the key fully have had it pulled? This is a good sign…

    • Oh interesting! I was actually trying to find something on reddit to see if same thing happens globally and if anyone else’s already had their game removed from their library.

Do you mind linking the thread please?

      • I actually stand corrected, skimmed the thread this morning at 6am. Game will likely be removed in a few days, many people had received the refund email.

        Link

  • Played a quick game this morning and it still worked.

  • I did not get round to activating my copy yesterday, so only did it right now (after receiving the pricing error email from GMG)
    Activation still works

Now I just need a killer deal on a GPU so I can play this in glorious 4k
I have been playing AOE1 DE in 4k with a gtx1050ti until now

  • +1

It's a bit sh*t, if I bought a game at eb games and activated it but it was a price error they would not expect to get it back. I mean I expect they might still be breaking even or at least roughly…. my theory is that they put the cost price up by mistake. They should honour it otherwise they are kind of untrustworthy. The game was not within a price that was crazy cheap just a great deal…

    • +1

This exactly. It’s not like they quoted us wrong for a nuclear plant and need to amend change it or they can’t deliver. Just a classic case of, ‘sorry wrong barcode. You keep that, we will correct the price’

  • I activated it within the Steam App, Greeman never had my Steam info. Not sure if this will prevent them from deactivating my copy. We will wait and see.

    • Same here but I'm sure they will revoke the key and the game will stop working. Then just delete it from your library.

  • +2

They appear to be getting roasted on Trustpilot.

Wonder how much bad publicity is enough to revoke their revoke 🤷‍♂️

    • I love the Aussie reviews mentioning OzB and EB as if they are known worldwide!

      • +3

Excuse me, OzB is definitely the most famous Australian website!

        • +1

          No argument there

  • +2

Not sure it's even legal for GMG to revoke a license once activated/consumed as it's no longer their property. Steam, Paypal and GMG would be liable. Me thinks a call to the ombudsman is in order :D

    • +1

Good luck finding a responsible from GMG here, and explaining to them how you bought a US only product in Australia by spoofing your location to the ombudsman lol

    • I think they would just point out we circumvented their regional system to buy it.

      • +1

Most security conscious (and tech savvy users) use VPN's to browse securely. Hardly circumventing regional controls, just practicing safe browsing habits. If their site relies solely on Geo blocking and doesn't employ credit card controls to restrict regional purchases it's hardly the fault of the consumer. I don't recall seeing a banner stating the purchase isn't applicable to Australian consumers.

  • I'm not sure if I should play it in the meantime, as I don't want to get hooked and then have
them pull it from me potentially…. I'm on unlimited data but imagine if you had limited data say a mobile data plan and used your data to download this only to have it pulled…

    • +4

I mean if they remove it, at that point I feel like its well deserved to be torrented and just keep playing lol.

  • I got a refund through PayPal. But nothing from steam. The game is still in my list.

    • Me too… I wonder if it will be pulled…

    • Free game? Fingers crossed

      • +2

I'm expecting them to take it off the list like a refund would work. If you didn't connect to the internet maybe you could keep playing it locally

        • Damn I only play multiplayer so cant stay offline

        • Can you select one game to stay offline in steam? Or do you have to be fully offline?

          • +1

@Misha Bakunin: I haven't done it but I'm guessing you'd have to block steam from accessing the internet.

  • +9

It would be funny if they refunded all these people only to find out they cant cancel the keys.

    • GG GMG

  • +2

Looks like they did the same to Insurgency Sandstorm Gold Edition as well they are currently refunding payments and revoking keys.

Surely Steam wouldn’t be happy having to revoke all the keys as I’m sure steam would need some sort of human intervention to make the process work.

GMG TrustPilot’s score is getting smashed currently 4.0 down from 4.7 stars earlier in the week.

    • +1

A price error sure does bring out the salt in people

      • +2

It's not just the price error, though, it's the handling of the whole issue.
        After initially complaining to GMG, here is the generic response I received from "Matt" the other day;

        "Hello XXXXXXXX,

Thank you for getting in touch with us, and thank you for your patience while you waited for a reply.

During the early hours of the 12th of July, 2022 we became aware that we had accidentally discounted Age of Empires IV: Deluxe Edition far beyond the price agreed with our partners. This meant that many customers were able to take advantage of a deal which had unintended consequences.

As a result of this error we decided to take the exceptional step to refund every customer who had purchased this game in full. As part of this process, all keys sold at this incorrect price were revoked.

We understand that this is a frustrating situation for every customer affected and we apologise for the incorrect discount on Age of Empires IV: Deluxe Edition and the disruption this has caused.

To ensure this kind of issue does not occur again we have overhauled our internal procedures by adding several checks to make sure that when you see a price on our site, you know it’s a price you can trust. We know that regaining trust in us will take time.

        Kind regards,

        Matt

        Customer Support

        Green Man Gaming"

        And my appropriately pissed off reply;

"Are you 'avin' a laff? The "exceptional step of refunding customers" AND revoking access to their legitimately and legally purchased content many hours after the fact, simply because you discounted a product too heavily? How is it the customer's fault that your systems can't detect when you've erroneously discounted a product more than you originally intended?

If you're going to revoke access to legally purchased games by involving Steam, effectively reneging your contract of sale, then providing a refund on the digital content which is no longer accessible is HARDLY an "exceptional step" - Rather, if this "exceptional step" were not taken, the transaction would effectively be considered theft, and Green Man Gaming would likely be liable for some hefty legal prosecution. To act as though you've gone 'above and beyond' by simply providing refunds on cancelled orders because of your own cock-up is absolutely ridiculous, and needs to be called out as such.

It beggars belief that GMG could handle this situation any more poorly than you already have, but the below reply from Matt appears to have done this.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this whole fiasco leads to multiple investigations by various consumer protection agencies and ombudsman services. Perhaps these investigations and any findings/penalties applied to GMG as a result will lead to your company acting differently in any similar future circumstances. In any event, I will not be providing my custom to your store in future and will advise my friends and family against doing the same.

        Bloody poms.

        • +1

Love it. Did you end up getting a reply from them after that? They had a golden opportunity to admit it was an error, but honour the transaction to generate good will, but instead chose this path. Now they've refunded the money AND I've still got the game.

          • +1

@OverburdenedWarrior: Nah, nothing yet. Doubt I'll receive anything less robotic-sounding and clearly automated than their last reply, tbh..

  • Has anyone got theirs revoked?

    • +3

      Not yet haha

      • paypal refund hasnt been processed yet either

        • +2

Mine definitely got refunded, so I’m double winning for now.

  • wow missed this ……

    • +2

      you only missed the drama

    • +2

Drama and possibly a free game though have to wait and see…

  • Mine has still not been revoked though i have been refunded…. its been a while now, so you think we just have it?

    • +3

My gut feeling is that they can only cancel the keys that haven't been redeemed.

      • Agreed… its been about 8 days since I activated the key and played it. I feel like if they were to revoke it would have happened by now…. though you never know….

  • +2
