Is It Possible to Get a Grant to Buy Land and Turn It into a Public Conservation Park and Campgrounds?

SA in particular seems to have a lack of conservation parks, and cheap public campsites. Look at Google maps and almost none of the state is not farmland ,urban, or desert.
So I wonder if I'd have any luck applying for a grant of a couple hundred thousand, with the intention of buying a large block of land, and gradually restoring the land to it's natural state, and also allowing cheap camping. Possibly eventually getting it classified as a public park. Victoria seems to have a lot more of this sorta thing, and it's great there.
If the campsites generate enough revenue, it could go towards additional future parks? It's a bit of an aspiration of mine to restore large areas of land, and also to create more campgrounds.

Very unlikely that the government will fund your business idea.

    with the intention of…

If anything, your proposal reads more like, “can I get taxpayers to pay for my land, I then live on it while thinking of what to do next?”, especially consider this.

I wasn't planning on living on it.

        Plans change. Nice try.

Your better option would be to seek other buyers to join you in purchasing the land. Each part owner can then use the land for recreation etc. There is one like this outside Sydney for horses, motorbikes etc.

    • Not a bad idea.

Horse riding motorbikes must be a niche market.

    • That sounds like a great idea

No chance unless you are a “donator” or a “bestie” to those councillors/ministers that could approve such ideas.

Are you in the right state? Lack of conservation parks? The city is quite literally surrounded by them!

    https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/find-a-park

'South Australia has had a proud tradition of establishing parks and reserves since 1891 when Belair National Park was first created. Since then, there are now over 350 parks and reserves which cover more than 20 percent of South Australia.'

And that doesn't factor in National Parks https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/

    You're not looking hard enough

Nah, you don’t get it… OP wants their own park (but with blackjack and hookers) and they want the SA government to pay for it and then OP wants to rent this park back to the tax payers so they can camp on it. Of course, OP would need to set up a house “administration building” on the site to take care of visitors.

No. much of SA's area of parkland is out in the desert far from anyone. And those closer to the city don't allow camping. There's only a handful available. Compared to victoria. The moutains around Melbourne have hundreds of parks and campsites. You're the one hwo doesn't get it.

        • +1

It sounds like you're an outsider who would like to introduce Victorian laws re camping and access here.

There's plenty of free camping close to the city. The fact that you don't know where means you haven't looked or simply don't like what you're finding.

        • Might be time you move to Victoria!

    • Yeah there's a fair few in the hills. but only a couple of them allow camping, and its very limited. A bit further out, there's stuff all. Most of the land area of parks is out in the desert up north.

I am a park ranger and do bushland rehabilitation and have been trying to do similar for years without success despite having both the experience and the education.
Unless you are privileged enough to know the correct ivory tower types I don’t like your chances.

More likely to have private owners of conservation land allow you to use it and maintain it, even then you’d need to kind of know someone.

Is Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary for sale? lol

Bold move for someone who had to ask how to buy a house four months ago.

    • -1

What's wrong with that? I now know how to, and making good progress towards that goal. It won't be long before I reach that. And buying a block of land is simpler than building a house.

Why don't you write to a billionaire to see if they'll support your idea? It's peanuts tor them.

Maybe tell them I'll name it after you.

Then register a name: After You (Wildlife Reserve, etc.)

  • Sounds like you should just buy a caravan park OP.

    • A caravan park is very different to native bushland. Not what I'm after. There's already caravan parks everywhere. but hardly any bush camping in conservation parks.

  • It’s a murky area of law - ideally you would be set up as a operator and lease crown land; which for caravan parks in nsw local councils have a foot in as well.

There was an interesting Dirtbag Diaries podcast a while ago about someone who bought a huge amount of land in the USA and was trying to get it converted to a National Park. I think it was close to happening, but was actually a huge struggle to get the government to accept it as a gift, never mind paying for the land. There is a substantial cost involved with runnning a national park.

Not related to OPs question, but the other interesting part is the land in question had been bought cheaply because it was forest/timber plantations previously used to produce the paper used in phone books, and the owner had gone bust following the worldwide demise of phone books.

There is a charity called Rainforest Rescue, that buys cleared blocks of land, mostly in the Daintree area in north Queensland, and turns them back into rainforest. Perhaps you could start your own charity in SA.

Perhaps you could start your own charity…

Yes, you could start your own church (like so many other businesses have done), maybe call it 'God for all' or something that sounds equally altruistic.

Then apply for tax-free status, get streams of people to join the 'new beginning' and pay you heaps of money so they can 'be saved'.
Then, you can buy whatever you want.

Wow! why didn't I think of that?

SAGov has a few funding programs to purchase land. This is usually done to protect or conserve some value in the land.
    BUT
Allowing campers is generally going to be inconsistent with protecting values.
I travel and use free camps a lot. There are some good reasons camping is not allowed close to cities and has to do with peoples bad behaviour. This includes idiots from the nearby city for the evening and feral campers. Even remote sites get hammered by folk who don’t know or just don’t care.
Extensive decorations of semi-used toilet paper, general rubbish and obligatory broken bottles, household dumping and vegetation destroyed because you have to have a fire don’t you?
The management of these places is not for the faint hearted.

Maybe educate yourself by joining with a ‘Friends of’ or one of the other community groups that put time into fixing these places.
