I'm trying to wait one more year for the 7800u and I probably won't need an eGPU

  • +1

Is XTRA5 coupon code eligible for cashback?

    • +2

i pulled the trigger, ill let you know if it goes thru

it tracked and is now pending for approval… in october 😂

cashrewards seems to be tracking at ~5%!

      $91 back from $1725

  • Can the battery life really get that long?

    • +3

The ryzen chips are pretty power efficient. But they generally measure battery life with like 150 nits of brightness…

    • +1

Given its an oled, power draw will heavily depend on the brightness of the content. Mostly white (e.g. webpages) will use much more power than e.g. letterboxed movies. So maybe, but it will vary — I wouldn't count on 13 hours.

If you compare the night raid scores with this article about 680M GPU, you will see 30,000 is about the same score.

The writer of the ultrabookreview article said this score might not be reached on Ultrabooks, as the 50w thermal might be limited in smaller chassis to 40w or lower. But they are incorrect, as this is an ultrabook that is also getting 30,000.

        https://www.ultrabookreview.com/54099-amd-radeon-680m-rnda2-…

Very nice review, Mcdooble. It's showing this machine is quieter than the other machine (12th gen Intel) I'm comparing it with which has two fans, while this has one.

        • I bought the 6800u version, if I'm not mistaken the TDP can be changed through software and increases performance by a lot (boost speeds held for longer and more power for the GPU). I'm unsure of the speakers but if they're good then this would be an excellent multimedia laptop :)

Finally an AMD laptop with USB 4/thrunderbolt

    • Yeah i just about to ask of that usb is pretty much the same as tb4?

      • +1

Pretty much the same as TB3.

        • -1

Ah then a no for me

            • @ChickenDinner123: TB3 and TB4 are the same in terms of bandwidth, up to 40gbps. The only real difference is that TB4 requires you to pay Intel a fee to get a shiny new approved sticker from them to certify that it works as claimed. TB3, implemented in USB4, now being an open standard doesn't require the OEM to pay the fees. P.S. That was directed to ChiMot

              • +1

@shellshocked: Not quite. The main difference is that TB4 uses 32Gbps PCIe. Speeds are the same but the bandwidth is doubled, so every TB4 port is guaranteed to be able to run 2 4k or an 8K monitor out of the box, instead of "well maybe, depends on the manufacturer and if they include 32Gbps PCIe" that TB3 and USB 4 deals with.

  • No jingle pay

  • what you think looks better storm grey or stone blue?

    • Blue seems nicer, grey is more utilitarian, but blue also has a $30 extra cost…

Maybe better deal to choose IdeaPad 5 Pro Gen 7 16" - AMD, $1600 for 3050 GPU

    • How about other spec? Same as this? I like 16" better but i want the usb 4 and if possible the touch screen

      • check Lenovo education shop, it’s there I believe it’s better value.

      • It doesn't have an OLED screen or USB4 option. The deal is also only available on the EDU site.

  • -1

So it's best to upgrade the base to the upgrade spec for the cheapest price?
Edit: I stand corrected, the base does not have the ability to upgrade the screen

    • +1

It does. Upgrade the ram to 16GB and you'll then be able to upgrade to OLED, as the second bolded line in the deal says ;)

  • +6

The 6600U only has 6 of the 12 CUs enabled on the iGPU, so it sacrifices performance compared to the 6800U with all 12 CU’s.

    • So how does this compare in real world gaming?

  • Is this good for text? Or better to stick to IPS for text?

    • -1

OLED is basically superior in every way for everything other than price!

    • Some reports abt the oled scren having subtle horizontal lines. Its putting me off a bit.

      • +2

OLED is fine. This is new gen OLED. I would call it 2nd gen laptop OLED. I have been using 1st gen OLED since Feb 2017 on 3 devices, Samsung TabPro 12", Samsung Galaxy Book 12" and now Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) 14" which I'm typing on now.

TabPro still works after 5 years but battery is bad now, and the screen does have horizontal lines which are faint but there on white background, but I disabled the screen dimmer 5 years ago so it's my own fault. New gen will be even better at burn in control.

  • Hows the 6600U vs the 5625U in the other lenovo laptops posted.

Feel like this feal the screen is heaps better than the standard lenovo FHD screen.

  • Which ecoupon?? Its showing me $1769 in edu store for oled. Can you tell me which coupon to use?

Do you know if the Thinkbook 13s is going.to be available in Aus soon?

Any reviews for this specific model?

  • +1

    This or x1 yoga

  • +1

I wish I could find a review for this specific model, only thing holding me back as I'm afraid there's some issue you can't see from the specs.

  • Why isn't this CPU listed on passmark - www.cpubenchmark.net ? (which I use all the time to score , check processors)

    • +1

Because laptops are just coming out with this CPU. There are probably not enough samples submitted.

    • Really? Google says came out in Jan 22?!

      • That was the official launch at CES 2022. Actually availability due to semiconductor shortages is from now onwards.

  • Anyone that has bought one of these deals what is the wait time like on these? Currently the model I'm looking at says ships within 5 weeks.

    • Just depends on availability. I bought a laptop which stated one month, and got it in a week. Others have had to wait a longer time.

      • This deal is mighty tempting. Laptops I've been currently looking at are running the older 5000 series for the same price.

  • If you can buy Thinkbook 14+ directly from China, it cost around $1200 aud at current exchange rate.

Main difference is none touch screen, no 360 degree rotation, speaker is not facing upwards collecting dust and particles, and More Ports.

    • +1

Reminds me of the guy that posted here that he bought an iphone from china because it was cheaper and ended up being scammed. lol

      • I mean official lenovo China website, for the 6800H(also 10W extra performance compared to 6800U, comes handy in light gaming)version, its close to $700 aud cheaper(unless you need touch and 360 Degree rotating screen).

But you need a friend to bring it in, so there is trouble.

I got Xiaoxin Pro 13 and Xiaoxin Pro 14 this way. But this year's Thinkbook 14+ have all refreshed spec with More Ports, which I prefer.

  • -1

GPD Win Max 2 is also a compelling alternative.

    • -1

Better CPU too.. But not the same in Warranty however. If you want a gaming box, go the GPD Win Max 2 - but a regular laptop is prob still better with this just for warranty and support reasons.

(I have ordered my Win Max 2 however. hehe).

      • Nice. Should be a good device.

  • Tempted, but chat support said this model doesn't support eGPU's, then said he wasn't sure and to talk to tech support on Monday to confirm. Anyone actually got one of these working with an eGPU?

    • The chat people are just know or been told to read specs on website. There are hundreds different model they are not IT educated but call centre oriented

    • +1

It has a 40gbps USB4 port that supports data transfer. That is what is required for an eGPU. The people you chat with are sales reps, that only read what they have in front of them. They probably wouldn't even know what the acronym USB is, let alone what an eGPU is.

I've asked them "technical" questions before, unfortunately they have no idea.

      • What is required for an eGPU is PCIe tunnelling. Unfortunately this is not mandated on all USB4 hosts, but is part of TB4 spec and apparently Microsoft is mandating it for all computers with USB4 ports to be certified for Windows 11. But being a relatively new requirement, there'd be no way to know how much bite Microsoft puts behind their words.
40Gbps is good, but an eGPU will work with 20Gbps with PCIe tunnelling (albiet slower).

    • It does support eGPUs and TB

  • Is the RAM soldered, no way to upgrade it?

  • google yoga fan problems

I just bought and returned a yoga 7i i7 after the fan ran at maximum even on standby, and three lenovo techs couldn't fix it.

the problem seems endemic to lenovo yogas, so I have similar doubts about this one.

    I bought a whisperquiet Intel M15 i7 touch instead.

    • Since the 7i units are based on Intel I wonder if that problem is specific to them since their processors are less efficient.

    • Well this is a an AMD based laptop, and not Intel based. I assume you would be aware that Intel 11th gen and 12th gen laptops are more power hungry, generate more heat due to still being built on their inferior 10nm process compared to the 6nm AMD uses via TSMC. Refer to the link below:

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Ryzen-7-6800U-Efficiency-R…

In relation to doing a Google search, I modified your request and changed it to "Yoga fan AMD".

All the links were positive about the AMD bases Yogas. There was a discussion on Reddit two years ago, where someone just updated their BIOS via Lenovo Vantage or tweaked their individual fan curve, but nothing significant that was a major issue since.

      • +1

As I said, endemic to Yoga - fan problems have been reported on multiple Yoga models, multiple years. AMD still seems pretty new on Yoga, so the jury may yet be out for AMD.

But when the Yoga 7i fans blast on full at all times including under no load, no fan speed variability, even blasting during sleep, and you have to work through three Lenovo techs , the last who eventually organises a recall after installing every firmware update and driver update they can think of, you cut your losses with Lenovo. (hours and hours of tech support and communication issues there. They also try and save money with whatsapp and flaky VoIP gateways. I miss IBM and its ThinkPad support.)

This isn't related to choice of processor manufacturer or choice of generation or fab geometry issue. It speaks directly to Lenovo's inhouse engineering, since fan control and product is to their design, and by the end of it all I wasn't too impressed by Lenovo's support, either.

  • Seeming there are no reviews, I'll give you my thoughts on this as I only want an OLED machine for my next. For the price it's excellent. I have been eyeing the Asus Zenbook Flip OLED 15 which is out at BestBuy with excellent user reviews, as well as great review on NoteBookCheck - but still no ETA for Australia. I went into long discussion about it here: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/90x18vn0

The pre-order price of the Zenbook just jumped to $2696. The differences between the models are:

Core i7 12700H has better single core speeds than 6600U and benchmarks around 5-15% better. But 6600U has MUCH better power efficiency.

Zenbook: Discrete A370M with 4GB DDR6 RAM (3D Mark Time Spy = 4308), 12th Gen Intel on 15.6" 120Hz OLED screen, with 1TB hard drive and RGB single colour keyboard and 96Wh battery in a 1.83kg machine. No fingerprint reader and only 720p camera for Windows Hello. Has number pad which makes keyboard off centre. Screen has PWM. Asus sells extended warranties through retailers, but no details on the specific Zenbook yet released. Doesn't include a stylus.

Lenovo Yoga 7: 90Hz instead of 120Hz OLED screen. Integrated Radeon 660M GPU using the 16GB DDR5 but only 512GB SSD? Backlit keyboard with no numpad, has 71Wh battery in 1.42kg machine. Has fingerprint and 1080p camera. Both machines have 16:10 aspect ratio. Comes with a stylus.

3D Mark Time Spy for Radeon 660M = 1700 or 60% slower than Zenbook Flip 15 (A370M). Essentially, the 660M beats all Intel Iris Xe 96 graphics from 11th Gen Intel from last generation, and Nvidia MX450: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/radeon-660m-rdna2-alder-la…

My current Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) has Intel 620 integrated, and the new Radeon 660M is about 8x faster in AAA titles @ 1080p. Personally I would play AAA at my desk, I would only do light mobile gaming, like platformers or pinball with an Xbox controller or turn based strategy like Xcom2.

Lenovo has much better warranty options during purchase process. I have used the Lenovo biz grade warranty for my current machine so I speak from experience, I had a tech show up physically to my home to fix my machine 2 weeks ago. You have a live chat app that is very old and not mobile responsive, and a support line for calling. Their systems need improving, but you can eventually get support for valid physical machine issues.

Both machines have rapid charge batteries. Fan noise should be less on the Lenovo due to the lower temperature profile. While I would prefer a 15.6" screen than 14", I would prefer not to spend an extra $1000. I like not having a number pad and prefer a centred typing experience. I love the keyboard on my current X1 Yoga, it has a wave effect whereby when you flip it, the keyboard recedes buttons recede into the case, but they got rid of this feature.

I'm very tempted to purchase this Lenovo machine today with the 3 year extended warranty and replacement battery options.

    • If you don't mind intel, have a look at the yoga 7i 16" with 12700H and A370M for 2080.79. Screen is non-high refresh IPS though.

      • I've only used OLED portable machines for 5 years already, never going back.

        • No issues with burnt in? I am contemplating jumping to OLED laptop myself having had OLED screen on phone and recently TV. Also heard that lenovo glossy screen can be problematic in bright-lit room.

    • +2

6800U (Radeon 680M RDNA2 ) 3D Mark Time Spy almost doubles 6600U. around 2500. Worth to pay extra up to $1725. From some YouTubers, can even play Shadow of Tomb Raider over 60pfs in 1080 low setting.

    • I tried to checkout with 16GB, OLED, stone blue model, 3 year premium warranty and battery replacement, total cost was $1800 quoted but when I click to next page, quote changes to $1883. Anyone see this?

      • You need to apply the coupon (XTRA5).

      • Which machine are you trying to order?

I tried to make an order with the same config as yours but there's no option to select 3 year premium warranty and battery replacement.

        • You need to click "Next: choose Services"

  • Are these on display anywhere? JB? HN?

    • It's only been on the Lenovo website in the last 2 weeks. It's not available in a retail store yet.

  • +2

Here is a newly released review of the exact laptop (name is slightly different)
    https://thehikaku-net.translate.goog/pc/lenovo/22Yoga-770.ht…

    Seems good

  • +2

With the good review just found by Mcdooble, I decided to pull the trigger. Can't beat the price for a 90Hz OLED machine and the ability to have a 3 year onsite warranty and battery replacement is so much better than any other laptop model (except maybe Dell):

    Yoga 7 (14", 7)
    $1,578.71

3YR Premium Care with Onsite upgrade from 1YR Courier/Carry-in
    $198.00

    3Y Sealed Battery Add On
    $24.00

    Total: $1,800.71

Then when CashRewards tracks, that's $63 back.
Then I have $125 of Lenovo rewards, let's say I buy something and sell it online for half, that's another $62 back.
Then I'm taking the machine overseas in 7 weeks, using TRS that's $163.70 back.

    so $1800.71 - $63 - $62 - $163.70 = $1512.01

Then I can sell my current used Lenovo X1 Yoga with a few months of biz grade warranty left, for about $900. So about $600 for a brand new machine with much better specs and a better warranty. Very happy. Asus isn't even releasing the new Flip 15 OLED until maybe Q4 and now price is $2696 for a better graphics card and a bit more hard drive space. Sure a 15.6" screen would be nice, but this deal is nicer.

    • Why not go x1 yoga for $2375 with oled.

      And 16% cashback

      • +1

I don't see an X1 Yoga for that price. Or a 16% cashback so not sure what you're on about.

When you customise your own X1 and add 16gb ram, 512gb SSD and OLED, the price is $3100 and the battery is 30% smaller.

    • I'm very tempted to basically follow what you've done. Seeing that you're familiar with Lenovo, how does their accident damage protection work? It's not included in the checkout process as far as I can see?

      • I don't think it's available, I read somewhere it must be bought at time of purchase but I see no option for ADP. Someone should speak to a Lenovo rep on the phone.

        • Yeah kind of confused by it - says it can be purchased within 30 days of buying or something. Would be good to use the lenovo credit to do so. Maybe I'll waste a reps time in chat.

  • What’s the difference between the two pen options, included Lenovo Digital Pen or Lenovo E-Color Pen for an extra $60?
I can’t find info on their site.
