    Do I need this?

    • +119

      You need 2.

    • +6

This + a 8tb usb drive = tiny media server you can hide in any corner of the home. Or tiny torrenting box you can run without using any power. Tiny SDR Radio scanner recorder. Tiny home automation hub that beats the pants of a raspberry pi.

      • if I am mainly using homebridge + pi-hole on my Pi4, would changing to this improve any of the homebridge performance?

        • +2

I’m running HB, Home Assistant, pi-hole, a bunch of other random containers on Pi4 with bit problems. HB doesn’t really need much more than a Pi 3 to be honest.

That said, if I was starting from scratch, I’d choose the Tiny at that price. Nice you factor in a case and SSD, you’re probably looking at this price anyway.

Also, x86 architecture is still much more flexible and supported than ARM architecture. Incompatibilities don’t happen often, but when they do, its a massive pain to troubleshoot and fix.

      • What do you do with SDR radio scanner recorder? What’s the purpose of the recordings?

        • +2

Anything you want. Listen to SES/Firies, FM radio, Digital TV, Aircraft, track aircraft, download satellite weather radio images, decode pager messages.

Yes, all of these are generally available online anyway through existing streams and services, but it's a bit of a niche hobby. It was a pretty incredible technological revolution when people discovered that lil old $30 USB T.V keys could actually receive almost any desired frequency, opening up all these things where previously it would have cost tens of thousands of dollars in specialised scanners.

I night be wrong here but I think you need a CPU with TPM 2.0 to be able to install Windows 11. TPM 2.0 is available on Intel CPU's 8 gen and onwards.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/553587/wi…

So how this PC will come with W11 pre-installed?

    • Fairly simple to circumvent the TPM requirement.
It does mean that it's not officially supported and could have updates withheld but I don't think it's likely

    • Some of the 6th gen business class machines supports TPM 2.0 with a dedicated chip. Not sure if this one is though.

      • This is how I'll bet it is in this case.
Fairly standard for notebooks and ultra small form factor machines like this to have had TPM since 4th gen or even earlier.
It's required for some business use cases.

    • very easy to circumvent tpm
      ie;https://ghostcloud.ml/wp1/w11-22h2-22621/

      *SV2GHOST1234
      *SV2GHOST1234U2

      • I love installing backdoored windows… just modify using Rufus from fresh media

    • +1

You are only sort of wrong here.

This has TPM hosted by the motherboard

      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/desktops-and-all-in-ones/thinkc…
Security chip Trusted Platform Module (TPM1.2-compliant)

Windows 11 is TPM1.2 compatible. It wasn't in the early beta's, it is now.

    • I have this tiny PC unit, and it does have a TPM 2.0 you can activate.

Look for TPM 2.0 TCG Security Device, its a firmware TPM. Google is your friend.

So that just leaves the 6th Gen Intel thats not technically supported but easy to circumvent, and I don't have any problems

      • Hey mate have you tried playing 4k60 streams on this? Did YouTube lag?

        Thinking about one for htpc

        • +2

Skylake processor, HD530 gfx - problem is Youtube uses VP9 so you'll be CPU bound. Ideally you want Kaby Lake or above, HD6xx/UHD6xx or better.

  • +5

Good value box this. Have literally hundreds of them at my employer's research & manufacturing facilities running 24x7 with a miniscule % failure rate.

    • +1

Great little torrent boxes. Although I do like my nuccies

  • do all the USB ports work?

if these actually are "MIL-SPEC" and were used by the ADF in any secure environment then it is likely the USB ports have been hard disabled (I worked for a major US HW supplier and this was a requirement for many batches of desktops going to the ADF/DEFAT etc.)

    • Ah that's interesting! Nah they are enterprise (Ex-office) so they wont be disabled. good pickup though

    • Fair point, but mil-spec is not the same as ex-mil.
Having said that, I can't see anything about them that is particularly mil-spec. Other than lack of wifi!

      • +1

From their website "MIL-SPEC testing validates the ruggedness, durability, and quality of this compact desktop. It’s tested against high temperatures, vibrations, shocks, altitude, and more, so it won’t let you down in even the harshest work settings"

      • Well we're lucky it says mil spec, not ex-mil, and you didn't read the advert at all then aren't we?

" now passing 8 US Military Environmental Specs (MIL-SPEC) on every model"

Why is there always that guy that has to invent things nobody was claiming to shoot them down, while still being remarkably wrong in almost every point they've made. Don't be that guy.

        • Pretty much just a marketing gimmick lol

Milspec just means that the engineering has been dumbed down to the point where it can be made by the cheapest bidder.

          • +1

            @Serapis: No, it doesn't.

    • +2

if the usb port were hardwired disabled. how do connect keyboard and mouse ?
Question from IT support who works for ADF….

    • +1

Disabling unused USB ports is more of an ACSC ISM thing, lurking somewhere in the hardening guide.

  • You have Win 11 in your description but on your website it states that the OS is Win10??
    - Please confirm

    • +1

      fixed, its W11

  • Do any come with onboard WiFi or are they are USB WiFi?
Which USB WiFi is provided please?

    • Wifi USB 300mpbs, they didnt come with the original onboard wifi

  • Is the LAN gigabit? I'd imagine it is but just want to be sure as this listing and Lenovo's site for the product both don't specify

    • yes

    • Haven’t seen 10/100 for a very long time except on poverty switches.

  • Would any of these work as a cheap Pfsense box?

I guess what I'd be looking for is low power consumption and the ability to have 2+ NICs (does that mean a PCI-E slot?).

    • Same here, also wanted to run HA.

    • I have one qnd am running proxmox with couple of vms.
HA, Ubuntu with pihole and few linux distros for test.

      • Great.. That's all I wanted to know heheh Thanks @laudalashun.
Would you mind sharing the hardware config in your unit?

    • There's only one built-in RJ45 port. You could use a USB ethernet adapter if supported by the OS. 2nd option is to use a managed switch with VLANs simulate multiport NIC. 3rd option is to use a mini-PCIe ethernet card and put it into where the built-in WIFI card usually goes into.

HA / PiHole consume very little resources so you can definitely run many more additional VMs on this, usually limited by the amount of RAM you put in.

Idle power for this unit is around 10~12W so it's a slight overkill for just HA/PiHole/routing (low speed).

If you are wanting to do this as standalone pfSense maybe consider the Jasper Lake boxes on Aliexpress where they come with many more ports and also slightly lower power consumption. Look up Serve The Home on YouTube as they've reviewed some boxes recently

    • Just use a USB3 Ethernet Adaptor.

  • +1

Rep - Is this the deal you mentioned would be coming in the comments of last week's post? Or is that still to come?

    • Hi!

      What the comment regarding?

        • +5

Ah yeah! So we're still waiting on the stock at the moment. Unfortunately due to the NSW floods the warehouses are closed so its been delayed a week from what I've heard. If I get any updates will let you guys know.

  • Looks great! Option to do 16GB ram on the M900?

    • +2

      added now!

  • Is the m900 a good media client for 4k and h.265 content if it needs to decode those types of videos?

    • +1

Note the quicksync featureset for Skylake: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video#Hardwar…

Any 10-bit HEVC (i.e. most grey-source 4K movies) will struggle.

      • You don't need hardware video decoding support if the CPU has enough grunt.
I have an older i7 4790 (3.6GHz) machine that decodes 4K h265 files just fine with about 70% CPU usage on the busiest core.

        • true I was thinking of transcoding not decoding!

        • Any HDR content?

I just ordered this unit, but I am worried it won't be able to output 4k HDR content via the DP (looks to be v1.2).

          • +1

@w33w00: Not sure about HDR I'm afraid, hopefully someone else knows 👍

Also I just noticed there's only a 2.2Ghz CPU in this machine, I'm not actually sure that will have enough grunt to decode 4K in software 🤔

  • Any workstation/tower server computers that use ECC RAM floating around?

  • Bought one. Will use ESXI to run as a little server.

    • With only one nic?

      • Well I can use the m.2 slot for the wifi card to connect an i210 intel Ethernet card and the port will be installed at where the vga port used to be.

  • +2

To those who don’t know: This machine runs Hackintosh perfectly. Once you change the wifi card to 94352Z everything will work. I already have a M910 with modified i9-10980HK ES cpu. It runs the latest Mac OS with everything working.

    • does the gpu wake?

      • sleep works. everything works. Sleep is always tricky. If it does not wake simply disable sleep. It is still 99.99% perfect.

        • i used to run haswell m93p it was so perfect macOS.
          share EFI? :)

          • @Nilfunds: Will take a look later. I remember I found a few online and one of them worked without any work.

            • @theabyss: ok thanks.

i have to resist this anyway lol

              but yea, hackintosh FTW :)

    • Is the i5 process 6th gen processor enough? It would be cool to get a hackintosh to play around with macOS, iMessage FaceTime etc and if good enough use Lightroom or something on it. Would an old laptop work maybe instead for portability?

  • Slightly confused with the video output. Does this have an HDMI slot available? I am planning to use this in the living room with the TV

  • I have been watching your deals on these form factor computers for a while… any chance of 7th gen (or later) CPUs?

    • +1

Gotta wait until corporate/government offices start offloading/upgrading…

    • Yeah I've been trying to get a decent deal on some, a lot of the 8-10th gen end are still pricey, will keep you guys updated if we get any!

      • Sounds great, looking forward to it!

  • Have one m93p, replaced wireless card with LAN. Perfect for openwrt

  • Purchased a few weeks ago for over $250. :(

    • Please hand in your Ozbargain membership.

      • +1

Funnily though it was from a post by the same OP.

        • Which one? I can't find it.

  • m93p - I believe it has vPro capability but can you confirm?

  • Please confirm how many monitor can be supported? I have a 2 screen set up. Every time a deal like this comes up I have to ask…so confusing.

  • +2

Isnt Intel Core i5 6500t 2.20GHz quite old nowadays?

    • Launch Date - Q3 2015.

    • Old but Intel didn't upgrade a lot technically at the lower cpu levels
For what most people use these boxes for its more than modern enough

  • Hi, would you be stocking m920q or m720q soon?

  • Any NEC SX4 or Paragon XP/S 140 's ?

  • Hey @rep.

Any chance on a deal for something in this form factor with a 7xxx CPU. I want something to run a plex sever and thats the sweetspot for quicksync transcoding. thanks!

  • Do you have laptops that are type C for display/charge ?

    • New stock is being uploaded next week which will have some!

      • Thanks, can you reply here when you do?

  • -3

Would it be possible to fit a GPU into this, like a 3070 Ti?

Also, am I right in understanding that MIL Spec means that it would be well suited to my mother in law?

    • No, this entire machine is only 18cm square. If you're looking for a gaming machine then buy a gaming machine 👍

Note : Seller quietly updated this "Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 Tiny Core i5-6500T" listing tonight to a dual core i5, down from a quad core i5. To be fair, it was also with a commensurate price drop.

As such the body no longer remotely matches the title. You should delete it / start a new thread mate.

    • +2

      Hi!

Not sure what you mean, the i5-6500T is a quad core. And no changes have been made to the listing. The lenovo M900 is a 6th gen i5.

      • +1

Hey rep have you tried running any 4k content on this?

      • Saw the link in the body to a different model, I may have been in error here.

  • +3

Can this play 4k without stuttering?
