Pocketbook Is Closing on 4th August

Was favourite tool to track spend and keep historical financial transaction data at one place.

How would it affect? Any good alternatives?

What does this mean for your data?
We will be deleting all personal information you have provided to us while using the Pocketbook service. This may include your email address, personal name(s) and mobile number.
We will also securely delete your personally identifiable financial account and transaction information from 5 August 2022.

What should I do next?
If you would like to keep your categorised transaction data, you will be able to extract it into a CSV file until 4 August 2022. You can find the instructions on how to do so in our help centre.
Pocketbook’s parent company, Zip, is looking to bring money management features to life in its app in the near future. You can download the Zip app today and apply for a Zip Pay or Zip Money account, or if you would like Zip to contact you in the future about these features, you can opt in to be contacted here.
If you are unsure about anything to do with the closure of Pocketbook, you can find out more in the FAQ’s on our help centre.

  • I only downloaded it yesterday! What are your top alternatives so far?

  • Frollo, Wemoney or goodbudget? Anything popular am I missing?

    • YNAB - Or are they a paid service?

      • +1

        Subscription

  • Up bank has categorisation in built - you can see monthly reports etc

    • I closed my Up account interest rate on savings was noncompetitive

    • Up is pretty cool if you bank with them only, but I want something to aggregate data from several banks.

  • Do any of the alternatives have custom categorisation and export to csv?

  • Pocketsmith?

    • Might be a bit expensive for long term use at $10.95 per month doesn't seem to handle investments, like shares.

  • I've been using Microsoft money for 28 years & have just started with Moneydance, MS money is outdated. Moneydance data is on your PC & is not a subscription. Moneydance can connect & download from banks however I have never liked aggregation, giving your passwords to a third party is dangerous. I researched for a long time before settling on Moneydance. There is a learning curve .Moneydance can import CSV files but I didn't like it, entering important historical data helps in learning how to use the program Hope this helps.Free trial is available.

    • From their website:

"Moneydance+ is an online service which downloads your financial information from thousands of banks and brokerages around the world. Available as a monthly or annual subscription with a 14 day free trial and is cancelable at any time. If you decide not to renew, your data will remain available within the Moneydance app for as long as you like.

Please note that currently only North American banks are supported, however EU and UK banks will be supported soon."

      Also is A$8.21/month

      • Monthly subscription is only if you want the option to connect to banks it's called Moneydance+ service, personally I think it's better to manually enter your transactions besides Moneydance only connects to overseas banks as per pizzaman!

        • I used to manually enter transactions with Quicken back in the day, but it was a chore and would end up doing it only monthly or so, so it was always outdated.
Pocketbook helped with that immensely by web scraping banks, so yes you had to give them full access to your bank accounts, which I agree is scary. But on the upside you always had reconciled up to date data.
With the new breed of apps using Open Banking https://www.ausbanking.org.au/priorities/open-banking/, part of Consumer Data Right CDR https://www.cdr.gov.au/, you don't need to do that, check Frollo https://frollo.com.au/ you authorize them only to pull the data that they need, the authorization isn't permanent and you can revoke it at any time.
The downside could be, of course, that data could be mined used to target ads, etc. Even though they specify that is against the rules https://www.cdr.gov.au/your-rights#goto-your-privacy-rights.

  • Never use any budget apps or software the only budget I need is pay myself first from that everything falls into place automatically

  • Frollo. Just because it uses open banking.

    • Installed Frollo last night and looks like a really good alternative. Open Banking is definitely a game changer in Australia. Only things I haven't liked so far is the inability to make custom categories, can't import historical csv data so you're limited to a couple years of data pulled from the bank and the lack of desktop app. Otherwise seems fantastic.

      • does frollo allows csv export existing/future data after linking all accounts?

  • Buxfer looks amazing and has the same power as PB, but I'm not sure how trustworthy it is.

It seems Pocketsmith is the most direct replacement, although definitely not cheap.

  • I've used Pocketsmith the last few years and been very happy with it. Doesn't handle Crypto but I use Koinly for that.

Seems frollo and other alternatives only run their service through apps. I like pocketbook because I work better on through website. Any suggestion for any other similar provider that also has a web interface?

    • pretty much same as you…i prefer web version as well but nothing i found so far. I am thinking of using We money through app, it at least allows csv export from there on I can do categorization in Excel. Yet to try this though…

    • Have you considered Pocketsmith?

Pearler is writing a replacement for Pocketbook - see https://pearler.com/pocketbook?utm_source=OzBargain&utm_medi…

I am not associated with Pearler but noticed they use Google Analytics. Feel free to remove the tracking parameters if offended (Ozbargain does the same with Amazon links but note there is no incentive for me).

These are the rough notes on roadmap - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ittFt27kDKrTWccXgEDQ7VOi…

If you want to be part of the beta program PM me and I can forward on his email (it was given in a private facebook group so no permission to post publicly)

    • This is promising news. Do we know how long they will take to come up with something that satisfies at least half of wishlist items they have in Google Doc?

  • Been using Pocketsmith for a few years as it handled multi-currency and multiple bank feeds automatically. ozb has referrals to gift 2 months to the person who referred you.

  • Well, turns out there's MoneyBrilliant, which is quite similar to Pocketbook. Service is still active, BUT not open to new users. Probably you can get in touch with them directly to see if there's wiggle room.

    • And Westpac also promises to provide similar functions via their own app by year end as well. It would be great if they deliver.
