  • Anyone have this and rate it ?

    • I got it in the last sale and don’t rate it. The sound quality is just ok, and you must place the sub carefully (in front). Otherwise the sub is distracting as another clear sound source. I use this bar in a bedroom, but for a living room tv etc, go the Samsung Q850T or the 950 with surrounds. Blows it out of the water in comparison. Better yet, don’t get a soundbar, but discreet speakers (Sony HT-A9 or a receiver and passive speakers + subs etc).

  • Cheaper than Yamaha YAS-209
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Yamaha-Wireless-Soundbar-Speaker-Y…

Similar speakers setup, but you get MusicCast with YAS-408

  • 2.1 channel only. Sony HT-G700 3.1 can be had for about the same price. Sony has terrible customer service, but once it works, the sound bar is ok.

I'm also no longer a fan of wireliess-only subs. I had issues with my Sony but resolved it in the end. If I were to buy again, I'd look for a bar with a wired sub option.

    • Where has the Sony HT-G700 3.1 ever been $400?

        • They came to under $400 at one stage. Danger box but new. Also the refurbished were under $400. I think I got mine for under $320ish from Sony Australia eBay

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/685940

Maybe they'll repeat the price but unlikely- maybe a it was a pricing error. I read Sony did try to wiesel their way out of shipping delays by offering refunds. They mislead eBay's postage tracking by saying posted but I found out it didn't leave Sony for about 3 weeks

Poop of a company to deal with when things go wrong. 2.5 months from payment from them to resolve issues But for the price I guess it was worth it.

  • Is it possible to pair this with some wireless rear speakers?

  • +11

Say no to 2.1 sound bars! 3.1 minimum unless you don't use it for anything with speech.

    • Thanks for the tip, I have no idea about soundbars and I would definitely want some depth of sound when I watch a tv show or movie!

    • What's speech? Are you talking about actual sound of service like Alexa?

      • +4

Talking about dialogue. 3.1 has a centre speaker which most dialogue in movies and TV shows would use. Instead of being played through the left and right speaker in a 2.1 setup. Helps with clarity in the dialogue and what not.

        • Ahhh sweet thanks…… now if one watches old re runs , say Seinfeld, the old dialogue would be L&R? Would it make a noticeable difference?

          • +7

@jzx100: If you're like me with a 2.1 soundbar, you crank the volume in dialog scenes because you can't hear people talk, then BAM, its action time its way too loud

As erifyx said, 3.1 plays the dialogue through the centre speaker so its much clearer and levels out the volume

          • +1

@jzx100: For Seinfeld specifically, it seems DVD releases were 2.0 (stereo), however streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video supposedly have it in 5.1 (surround), meaning that it would have a centre dialogue channel.

That being said, I would say TV shows such as Seinfeld (or similar), are content that mostly has dialogue only, which won't benefit a significant amount from having centre channel separation from L+R. Especially if its mostly old re-runs, which are likely to have only been released in 2.0 audio anyways. Whereas (≥5.1) content with a lot of action or music audio being layered on top of dialogue would benefit.

Regardless, I would still avoid investing money into a soundbar or sound system that doesn't have at least 3.0 or 3.1 audio channels, as I don't think a 2.0 or 2.1 sound system is a significant upgrade over built-in TV speakers - i.e. if you're going to bother investing and setting up a soundbar/sound system for your TV, might as well make it worth it.

The Yamaha’s have a clear voice option which makes speech excellent
I have the yas209 for the last few years and very happy with it

    • This soundbar has 3 separate speakers for each of the two stereo channels, and a special clear voice feature, so I'd think dialog on this will be just as clear if not better than any other 3.1 system in sub $400 range. I have the YAS209, with clear voice speach is pretty clear.

    • Even 3.1 on some media the speech isn't great. But if I set the output to stereo in the media player, it fixes it. I've only had it happen on one or two films.

Can someone explain, why this 5.1 isn't better than this 2.1 at half the price?

    https://www.centrecom.com.au/logitech-z607-51-surround-sound…

    • +1

      From my limited knowledge:
The logitech is bluetooth, RCA or 3.5mm jack for inputs.
The logitech is not a soundbar which some people find more appealing when it's all sitting in your room and less wires.
Soundbar will have hdmi, use ARC, etc. (optical?)

      • If your TV has RCA out for surround sound, Z607 is likely a better option. Most new TVs don't as far as I know…

    • It's not a soundbar?

      • Yes, I was asking, isn't this better than sound bar, to have surround sound and at half the price

        • That's like comparing a laptop to a better spec desktop for half the price. They aren't the same thing.

          • @bejahi: I was asking, apart from the form factor, isn't getting a 5.1 better for half the price

            • @ozshopp3r: Apart from the form factor, isn't it better getting a desktop gaming PC with a better CPU and GPU than a laptop for half the price?

              • @bejahi: I mean, isn't 5.1 much better than soundbars. isn't the only advantage they have is the form factor ?

                • @ozshopp3r: Nah, all those channels can confuse just two ears.

  • How about this one? Specs look impressive? :
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/hisense-31ch-300w-dolby-atmos…

    • Yeah looks interesting for the price of $299 with Atmos and 3.1. Too many choices..

Reviews aren't very good online, but I saw this:
"This soundbar gets bad reviews but that is because people don't set up their TV properly to use it. When connecting this to a TV you must use a version 2.1 HDMI cord. The one that comes in the box is not version 2.1. You need this because the sound bar only works properly with eARC and for whatever reason if you try and use any other HDMI cord the sound is very low, there's hardly any bass and it seems to have a stutter in the audio. Connect the sound bar to your TV's HDMI eARC port. If your TV has eARC it will be labelled on the port. You then need to find the setting for eARC in you TV's settings and manually turn it on. It won't be switched on by default. Once this is done, the sound is loud and crisp and the bass booms. Setting up this sound bar by normal ARC, an optical cable or a HDMI cord lower than version 2.1 doesn't work. The sound is very very low and the bass almost non existent. Do not buy this if your TV doesn't have eARC."

  • How does it compare to this? $30 more for 3.1

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/polk-signa-s4-sound-bar-w…

  • I have the YAS-207, I wonder if this would be a decent upgrade.

Works well, only issue I have is with my Sony X9000 TV 80% of the time I turn on the TV, it doesn't turn on with it even with ARC setup, so it's a pain in the arse having to turn on the soundbar each time. Sound quality wise, very happy.

Wondering if I'm better off getting a Sony soundbar or if that won't make a difference.

  • Is Sonos better?

    • Don't own a Sonos or a soundbar (got a legacy 20yo Yamaha 5.1!), but using the closest ones in price, that's the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and Sonos Playbar, and the answer is… shmaybe depending on your usage. And going only by these ratings, the difference isn't mind-blowing.

      • Anyone have a beam 2 and paired with other Sonos speakers, ie play 1 as rears? Sound good? I’m thinking of doing this, I’m after the atmos experience as have the atmos tv.

        • +2

In case you're interested, I know there have been discussions here in OzB buying the Sonos-IKEA collab Symfonisk that work as capable satellites / rears — even better, they're currently 30% off were $199 now $139.

          • @Member 0230: I wasnt aware of these. I already have the Play 1's so probably no need to buy these….. just trying to workout if the sonos beam gen 2 and play 1 would be good sound etc

  • -3

Sound bars are junk, not worth it, you'll be forever upgrading until you get a proper surround system.

    • Tell us you've never experienced a quality soundbar without telling us

Tell us you've never experienced quality sound from a soundbar without telling us

  • I just purchased one of these just 2 weeks ago for my open living area to replace an old Samsung soundbar (HW-F450). The reason for the upgrade was for the MusicCast system. The MusicCast system is great and I'm very happy with playing Spotify thoughout the house synced up through my receiver HTR-4072, the YAS-408 and a MusicCast 20 in the outdoor area. The only complaint I have for the soundbar is there is no display on the soundbar and the remote is cheap/not as functional as the old Samsung.
