I hate it when they advertise "$4 off". It doesn't give you an idea how much it is.

The Chicken Alfredo is sold by weight.. so they can be excused for that.

      • +1

By weight or not, it must have some price.

        • +2

It does have a price. You can ask on the Costco shopping group on Facebook.

Usually stuff like that that is discounted ends up being an excellent price and almost always a great tasting product.

If it's per kilo, then it would be hard/impossible to state the actual price when there is a flat discount. Obviously the smallest packages are the first to go, so get in quick.

@TEER3X: If anyone cares it is $14/kg and packs seems to be a minimum of 1.5kg

@capslock: Thank you for answering the real questions!

    Kirkland

    Good deal for Scotty…

  • +8

    Unpopular opinion.

Costco isn't cheap and is overhyped.

    • +9

Aggree it's not particularly cheap for most things - but the price isn't really why people go to Costco.
They supply things you can't get anywhere else. A surprising amount of their offerings are unique to Costco, and they have some excellent stuff.
If you're looking for cheap groceries, then stick to Aldi. Generally Costco are competing at the higher end of the market.

      • +2

yeah i generally only buy stuff from costco that i cant find in woolies/coles i.e. american cheese

        • +1

can't beat costco's price for DOP cheese

      • +1

Don't forget the free samples and hot dog

Not wrong at all. Still my favourite place for an occasional shop.

Anyone looking for super cheap deals won’t find them at Costco. They tend to get mid/high quality stuff (with rare exceptions) at great prices. Best return policy by far.

Pistachios are the only prices I know well enough to comment on. Coles are about 40% more expensive per kg.

The tart dried cherries are my favourite - they’re incredible.

I find them to be cheap for clothes a lot of the time.
But I do agree they are often no better than anywhere else for many items.
Worth the membership fee alone for the fuel savings if you are near one with a petrol station.

    • +4

I can rely on Costco though to only sell high quality items. Aldi not so much.

    • +2

      Petrol is cheap.
Some things are cheaper at Costco then anywhere else.
Other stuff you can only get at Costco.
Lots of things, even with buying in bulk, is as expensive if not more then Coles/Woolworths.

An expert Ozbargainer could definitely get their membership worth, but for me I let my membership lapse as it just isn't worth it for me.

    • +2

I don't think you need to say it's an unpopular opinion.. in fact that is the popular opinion.

    • +1

Not unpopular. Just facts. Costco isn't a place to shop if price is a major concern.

Where you see "value for money" is in quantity and items you don't find elsewhere.

    • +1

It is nice buying in bulk even if it isn't cheaper. Like the maple syrup, the Kirkland 1 Litre bottle is the same price per mL as the 250mL glass bottles are on sale at Colesworth, to the homebrand. But it is nice having one large plastic bottle instead of four little bottles that seem to start running out as soon as you open one.
