Also on ebay with $12.90 shipping for anyone looking to use their $50 voucher https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325185996146?hash=item4bb6988572…

Sad to see a lot of their eBay items aren't Plus anymore :(

I bought some mudguards for $15 recently, free Plus shipping, they were sent express overnight from QLD to TAS in a huge box, 300x300x920mm, I hate to think how much the shipping cost, lol …

      • Are any of their products ebay plus now? I think it might have been put on ebay plus incorrectly before. I picked up some things with codes i had as well before and i think they realised the mistake then as it wasnt ebay plus before that.

    • I should have put this in the title, but direct from Pushy's, the shipping is also $12.90.

LockPickingLawyer says it's 'probably reasonably safe for the streets'

    • +1

If you need a custom made pick to open it I'd say it's secure enough.

    • +2

      That's a different lock

    • +3

      I LOVE the LockPickingLawyer!!

I've learned so much from that guy. The false sense of security most locks offer is positively scary.
I've changed all my household locks based on the fact I learned to pick the old ones in less than a few weeks.

Massive eye opener that's for sure.

      • +2

        The false sense of security

True, however by far the most break-ins are either opportunistic (doors left unlocked) or brute force. Even the most unskilled bad guy can get into the average house in under a minute with a pry bar, cordless/bolt cutter, brick through the window etc. While the LPL videos are good entertainment they have very little bearing on real life.

      • +3

The biggest lesson is to park next to someone with an inferior lock.

      • +3

I've changed all my household locks based on the fact I learned to pick the old ones in less than a few weeks.

The amount of theft based on locks being picked has to be almost zero. I leave all my stuff unlocked and crooks still break windows to get in…

LPL is fun, but that isn't real life.

        • Correct. The Drug users aren't bothering with $50-00 disk detainer picks they are using bolt cutters and jumping fences.

    • +9

With all locks it's not making it impossible it's about making it harder than your neighbours lock

    • His April Fools videos are hilarious

      • I think they’re cringe

    • +1

is this the same lock? looks diff, diff model number.

    • +1

Not the same lock. That one is the model 40 which uses a disc detainer core.

  • Great deal, got one, thanks.

      Good one Dad

If you have an expensive bike, the best option is to get it insured. My electric bike got 2 proper locks on it, the thief cut both of them!

    • Were they both Kryptonite?

      • +6

They were both Onguard, one was a D lock 14mm shackle, the other was a chain lock with 14 or 16mm chain. It makes no difference if it's Kryptonite or Abus or Onguard. They will come with an angle grinder and that will work through any lock.

Although, there's a huge d lock that I saw on YouTube, it's so thick that it wears out the angle grinder but it's way too big for practical use.

        • That f’n sucks man, sorry to hear.

        • Most bike locks will be defeated by angle grinders however they make lots of noise. It is such a pity that noone noticed when they cut your locks

          • @theUnderdog:

It is such a pity that noone noticed when they cut your locks

It's amazing what you can get away with if you dress like a maintenance man and act like you are just doing your job. Overalls and hi-vis vest will get you into almost anywhere with very few questions asked…

        • They will come with an angle grinder

Depends where you leave your bike. If left in an underground car park overnight, expect bad things to happen. But if locked up outside shopping centres for 30 min during the day, I would not expect to see angle grinders.

          too big for practical use.

That's what she said. 18mm D-lock may have been better. Thief might move on rather than tackle 18mm of steel. They are under 3 kg, and if your bike is electric then you can carry heavier locks without issue.

If you have an expensive bike, the best option is to not leave it unattended.

    • +1

my insurance didn't cover the replacement locks the (profanity) thieves tried to drill only to mess up the lock. my bike didn't get stolen but had to buy another kryptonite evo 4 chain and hiplok dx.

    • I learnt the hard way that most insurance policies don't cover ebikes. Whilst they say that they cover bicycles, they point you to the fine print where they define a bicycle as being non-motorised only

      • there are bicycle-specific insurance policies you can take out.

So thats the top side of the pole being open, the other less considered peril (and this happened to me), is the bottom side of the pole being open - as in it looks cemented into the ground but you can actually just lift the pole right out of the cement! Wasnt something id ever thought of before until my bike locked to a >3m high street sign was gone one morning and i tested the pole after and shook my head as i realised haha. Lucky it was a crap bike haha

    • Lock's worth more than the bike!

OnGuard Brute U-Lock has a much thicker shackle than this - lockpickinglawyer was unable to cut thru it with his hydraulic bolt cutters - he picked the lock (as always) but said it was tricky - sells for around the same price as this abus - https://www.bicyclestore.com.au/onguard-brute-std-u-lock.htm…

    • It is cheaper at bikebug with free delivery
      https://www.bikebug.com/onguard-pitbull-8003-std-u-lock.html

I dont believe then shackle is much thicker though. I own both but gave the OG to dad so I cant compare, from memory they are both 14mm

Edit: double checked the OG is 14 vs Abus 13mm

      • +1

You've linked the Pitbull model which is thinner than the thicker Brute range (16.8mm). They're considerably cheaper than the NY range of kryptonite locks.

If I remember correctly, the LPL took awhile to crack this one as it had an abnormal lock and it was thick enough to survive his hydraulic cutters.

Obviously can still be defeated by angle grinders but practically, the common thief will likely move to an easier target (unless you've got a very $$$ bike).

        • you are totally right kds - unusual lock to pick apparently - and being nearly 17mm there is also a chance the thief will have to change cutting disc on his angle grinder to complete the job

ps lpl also had to tilt the lock at a different angle half way thru picking it which may not be possible in real life situation

        • Sorry you are right. I linked the wrong lock in the original post. The brute with free delivery is at the same price here
          https://www.bikebug.com/onguard-brute-8001-std-u-lock.html

  • is this or hammer a biker's fav?

  • +5

It's a sad world we live in where you can't leave your bike unattended without a lock and still have it be there when you return. What is wrong with people.

    • -1

It's the same world we've lived in forever. There's always someone who wants to take something that belongs to someone else.

    • +1

It's getting worse these days. The moped gangs in the UK are actually targeting solo cyclists because bicycles are so expensive and in high demand these days, and are much easier to sell and/or dismantle components than a car.

Be aware that it's a pain to copy Abus keys. I found exactly one shop in Australia that does this, had to ship them my key, they sent a copy back which didn't really work well, so I had to do it again

The 420 is still made in Germany

  • Haven't had any luck getting the newsletter $10 voucher, anyone received one from a recent sign up?

    • +1

I didn't have any luck on the mobile, but when I went to the website on my laptop (didn't try desktop version on my phone), there was a popup to enter an email to subscribe which came with a $10 voucher.

      • thanks, worked for me on the desktop but not on tablet so all good. Bought some chain lube to get it over $50, not sure if $49.99 would have worked but they had some good clearances on lube.

  • +2

Now reduced to $19.99 + Shipping.

    • Got me partial refund, much appreciated. I ordered 2 days ago

    • Thank you, got one. And used push15 for an extra 15% off.

      • Yeah I was annoyed that the 15% off came after I ordered but I figured for the small amount, you win some, you lose some. :)
