Dyson (V8) Genuine Vs Non-Genuine Battery

It's time to start replacing my battery for the Dyson V8.

Are there any after-market batteries worth considering? Or do I just bite the bullet and pay for the genuine?

If the answer is 'genuine' - are there places that discount?

aftermarket ones dont last long as genuine ones due to mediocre cells used in the pack.

    • not just that, they also overstate capacity, I once opened 4ah 24v battery in it and found 6 LG cells with usual 2ah capacity. But at least they're LG cells (not the high spec sony murata cells tho)

    No

    This.

Oddly Dyson sells a new battery and charger for the same price as a battery, so go that.

Also if you buy a 'new' dyson battery from dyson, they give you a 2 year warranty on it. I got one that failed at 20 months old, they replaced it for free. So was worth the money.

    • Awesome. A family member across the road borrows it and doesn't have a charger. Ours is wall mounted

The general consensus is that the knock-offs have a fairly limited lifespan, likely due to the inferior quality of the lithium cells and BMS (battery management system) that are used to make these batteries. I remember reading somewhere the batteries used in the real batteries are high rate discharge cells, while the knock-offs sometimes use ordinary 18650 cells that will quickly degrade as you use them.

Best get genuine. I tried a battery from a Holden V8 and it wouldn’t fit.

    • You need to saw it in half before fitting

I've actually had the opposite to the comments above, I own a V8 and bought non-geniune batteries and they have worked better than the genuine. Longer lifespan, longer run time - So far no issues, and bought in June 2020.

      I've got a V6 that I got with a 2100mAh battery in 2016.
I've bought aftermarket battery replacements in 2019 and 2022 and I've been happy with them. The one I'm using at present is 3500mAh and the runtime is definitely much longer than with the original battery.
One caveat: the stated capacities of any batteries on eBay are often fraudulent. I ordered one from eBay earlier this year that claimed to be 8000mAh (yes I should have known it couldn't possibly be that big), and the one that arrived was only 4000mAh according to the label on it. The supplier offered a 30% discount but I was so pissed I sent it back for full refund. There is no way of flagging these items on eBay as fraudulent, which encourages sellers to state stupidly high capacities as a way of getting more sales.
Anyway, I ordered my latest 3500mAh battery for $43 from amazon.au and got what I ordered. You can check reviews on Amazon and see if purchasers are complaining about the capacity or the reliability - so much better than eBay where sellers can lie about their products or even where they are shipped from (like from China instead of being sourced in Australia), with no consequences.
The Dyson V8 battery that JimmyF listed above sells for $139 (and Dyson don't even state the capacity!), so you can see the saving and performance improvement to be made by going aftermarket.

      • Do you have a link for the latest one you bought from Amazon? Thanks.

          My Dyson is a V6 (not a V8).
My latest 3500mAh battery for $43 from Amazon was

The runtime is longer than the original Dyson battery, and I believe that the capacity is correctly stated. It also runs fine on Turbo mode, so there is no problem with current draw, I can still suck the dust out of sliding door tracks.
You can also buy aftermarket batteries with even larger capacity, that are physically larger than the standard battery. I decided not to get one of these because they will not fit in the charging holster, and because they are heavier, and because the extended runtime I already have is sufficient.
Just as an aside (sorry, I'm hijacking this V8 thread with V6), I also got a HEPA exhaust filter for the V6. When you clean the V6, it gives a puff of dust from the exhaust area, this no longer happens now that I've fitted the HEPA filter.

          • @kmwa: Cheers for that. Yeah, I was after a V6 one that fits the original charging station.

    • It might last a bit longer but the capacity is overstated, unless the battery is physically bigger and thicker it contains the same 6 pack cell, Dyson uses Sony/Murata VC cell that's capable of sustaining 30a draw but those cells only has around 2-2.5ah capacity. Aftermarket cell can offer larger capacity (above 3ah but usually has lower max current draw).

My wife called up Dyson this week as our second battery for our V8 died (vacuum is about 3.5 years old, battery was about 20 months). She was told there is only a 1 year warranty on replacement batteries.

At the end when she told them she would look at other options, they suddenly changed their mind and are sending out a new battery.

    YMMV

  • Yeh, I've bought worse and better aftermarket ones. The last aftermarket one I bought was 100grams less than the original. Didn't last long at all. The current aftermarket one I bought seems to be going good. So there's definitely dodgy ones out there.

This is the latest one i've bought, used my $20 ebay plus coupon on it.

  • Quick update - I took the punt and got one of MyDeal $70.90 shipped.
The capacity advertised is larger than the OEM.

Its been a few weeks now and its working well. It did have one hiccup where it came up with the 'red' warning - but taking off the charger and reseating it mitigated that.

The battery also lasts quite a lot longer than the OEM - given the capacity. I can do the whole house now with one battery and use the MAX Suction setting for longer.

    • Update - it died. got close to 2 years out of it

  • Ive purchased a replacement battery (after market) off popular ebay sales post, and it has worked fine, I have not noticed significant differences to genuine Dyson one.

    • How long have you had it? Mine lasted 2 years - not good but not awful either

  • It's not just the cells that matter it's the circuitry inside, I'm happy to buy genuine knowing the circuitry will be up to standard. I want to sleep easy as the thing is plugged in 24/7

    • I don’t leave mine charging 24/7. Only as needed

The roborock does the brunt of the cleaning. And that is programable not to charge 24/7 either. I don’t let it charge at night.

I’ve spoken to firefighters who don’t recommend charging anything 24/7. I unplug my laptop after finishing that days work and programmed to charge it to 80% max (unless I plan to take it to meetings the next day)
