You can just use aluminium foil. Works out much cheaper

    • +4

I have a hat made of aluminium foil

      • My hat is made of tin foil

        • +2

tin will work, but too expensive.

        • Is your name Ned Kelly?

      • Great, you can accessorize then…

    • Wasteful much?
Dig a hole and bury it every night.

      • landfill…

The Greens will go after you…

Mate, it is a thing in Oz.
Criminals have access to repeaters and I have seen dozens of anecdotal reports of people having their possessions stolen from their cars at night with no sign of break in.

If you have your keys on the other side of the house you'll be fine, but if you keep your keys close to the door and your car is nearby they are subject to this attack.

Note that some manufactures are putting in safeguards around this attack by timing the signal and response. If the signal takes too long then that means the keys are not actually close by as the repeater adds latency.

Cheers mate… appreciate the advice and manufacturer update.

  • How can they steal your code if nobody is pressing the button on the key?

  • +8

If criminals got into my car last night, all they'd get for their trouble is my prescription sunnies, plastic bags, and some rubbish.

Oh almost forgot my brand new tissue box noooooo

Sounds like a cheap home and contents insurance quote for you then

      • Insurance? That’s for wusses

    • They got in my car last year. Took my covid mask and mobile phone battery pack. You'd be surprised what they'll take.

      • What sort of car is it? Are you saying the car was locked before you found things missing?

Aren't you going to feel sheepish if one day you discover the mask and battery are at the bottom of your backpack :)

  • Does an empty chips packet work instead of these?

    • Not if it's plastic.

People are so paranoid these days.

Create a problem, sell the solution. lol

    • Reminds me of the special RFID blocking wallets that the oldies buy because someone might tap&go their cards whilst walking past.

Thats why I park 1 km away from home where the keys are resting. On a side note, I lost 4 kgs weight in the last 2 months. Win Win

what kind of thieves are these? send them my way

      • Lolz

      • +1

They go by the name gastro

        • +2

Ahh that old friend.. Infidel Gastro.. he’s been here before too..

  • it is already happening here

  • Solution: customise your car not to have push start button. In that way, thief still needs a physical key to start the car. Hot wiring or lock pick is still harder than simply using the signal method. Back to the old days.

    FAIL
These puches FAIL within weeks. They are unreliable at best, and give a false sense of security.
The coating on the pocket rubs of with use, and they are totally worthless.
    Yes, I have tried several.

Wait for a few weeks, you will be able to unlock car/start engine without removing key from pouch again!

  • It doesn't truly work, some reviews mention that very soon after the purchase this "bag" and nothing is the same.
    It also looks very bulky

Spend a little bit more for something more solid: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274928994606

    • $52.24 ????

I'd just throw my keys into Microwave!

      • What wattage, and how long for?

  • This is so unnecessary. I have a proximity key, you have to be very close to the car for it to unlock, as in it doesn't work unless I'm a few CMs away from the door handle. If someone breaks into your car while you're next to your door, pushes you aside, presses the break peddle and turns the car and steals it, you probably aren't meant to have that car.

      Amplifiers exist.
You don't need to be a few centimetres from the door, if you can stand in the driveway and amplify the signal coming from inside the house.
This is what crims are using to enter cars with proximity keys, whilst your keys are safely inside your house.

  • How about removing the button battery. It works just as well. 🤷‍♂️

    • Agreed…

  • Buy a pack of Smiths Chip, eat chip. don't dispose the the bag. Put keys in the bag. Problem solved.

I got this idea from the movie called "Enemy of the State" (2008 film).

    • Great move. Was from 1998 though

  • I turned it off on my last 3 cars, I surf and use a surf lock on the tow bar, lock comes with a silver bag but have never tried it.

  • Sell your bells and whistles velocipede and buy a HQ Holden (if you can find one)

    • Yep, because a HQ was so hard to steal. 🤣
Edit: Unless it's a 3 on the tree. Most wouldn't even know what that is, let alone how to use it! 😉

  • Yeah they can take my car! It's green, plants growing on it😂👻

I just put mine in a metal tin when I get home. Spare key is hidden away with the battery out of it.

Highly skilled thieves can pick the door lock, connect a laptop to the OBD port and create a new key and drive away within 2 minutes. This is happening right now in Canada with the latest high end cars like Lexus. The cars are then shipped to South Africa and sold for more than the Canadian RRP.

    • Gotta appreciate the ingenuity and dedication to craft, of people looking to make an 'easy' buck

    • Have you tried to bring the tin with the key inside it to the car?
Don't be surprised if you can sitll unlock the car door!

Most (not all) but most metal tins have a type of coating over them, that will prevent this "Faraday cage" from working as designed, because there is no actual RF/electrical connection between the lid and the closing part opposite the hinge. (Or if a removable lid, between lid and tin).
This has the effect of no lid at all.

      Try it!

  • Just put the keys in the microwave. It's a faraday cage
