$1 Coffee, $4.50 Coffee and $? Coffee. Which One Is Yours Go to?

Stumble across this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/707243 made me do this poll.

I love coffee, and there has been occasions(most) when $1 Coffee has been better than those made by the baristas.

I was just curious of what is Ozbargain's favourite.

True ozbargainers make their own coffee. Delete your account!

I agree to some extent but $1 justifies more that putting the effort in, cost of coffee, milk, sugar and the cups.

    • I can't use the water Urn at work for coffee. The water is disgusting.
OK for cup of soups though.

      • +4

I'll give you a kettle for free or $7.50 new at big w

        • Most offices that have urns had them installed due to safety concerns with kettles so you're not allowed to use them. At least that's my experience.

          • +1

            @apsilon:

            safety concerns with kettles

            Haha?

            • @brendanm: anything is a weapon in the hands of disgruntled employees?

            • +2

@brendanm: Yep, some people can't handle a kettle. Overfilling, dropping, splashing, forget that it produces boiling water which burns etc. People get burnt which is a problem where it's employer supplied kettle and premises. Take all that away so all they have to do is open and close a tap (which is still too much for some).

          • @apsilon: Seriously? Lol

          • +2

@apsilon: I haven't seen an urn outside of a community hall in decades. Businesses install those undersink hot/cold filtered water units everywhere now.

            • +1

@Mechz: I'm talking those wall mounted directly plumbed urns, I think Zip is the most common brand IIRC? Not the old school portable one I think you're thinking of.

          • -1

@apsilon: Lol at desk monkeys. Sounds like a lot of them wouldn’t even last a week if they had to do my job.

          • +2

@apsilon: At least with a kettle, you fill and turn on, you know what your getting into. An urn is just a magical spout, often at head level that produces hot water, ive been burned by urns as its easy to be a bit casual, miss the cup, think it might be cold watern or something else retarded. Kettles? Never been burned.

True.. they spend a grand plus to make 1 coffee a day…

      • We would recoup the "investment" over time. OzBargainers have life expectancy of about 500 years.

      • +1

        Yes, it's smart.

      • I spent $1600. Some days I have one coffee, others I’ll have 5. If I have people over it’s easy to do 20 in a day. It’s dialled in just how I like it, I never get a bad coffee and it’s always available. It’d be worth it even if it was 10k tbh.

The value of consistently good coffee far outweighs the financial cost imho.

    I am Coffee..

  • Shell coffee the cup feels like it's going to disintegrate

    • Funny you say that, may 7/11 coffee recently started leaking from the bottom.

  • +3

Should add Coles Express $1. Also duped https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/650649

and there has been occasions(most) when $1 Coffee has been better than those made by the baristas.

And I have to say, my $9,000 Camry is a lot better than my neighbour's $250k Buggati.

    • You trade up the Mustang?

      • +1

Na, Mustang is my weekend driver. I used an Accord as my daily car but it finally died, so I picked up a Camry.

The Mustang is going on Carsales soon. Fuel is just untenable at the moment so good luck to anyone stupid rich enough to buy it.

Make my own or local cafe for $3.5

  • +2

Have not bought a barista coffee in years. Invested in a good coffee machine/grinder and make my own. Occasionally will grab a $1 7/11 coffee. Can't justify $3.50+ per cup..

  • +4

My local 7/11 just upgraded their coffee machines. They look sleeker, is easier to use and most importantly a lot faster in making a cup of coffee, but the taste is just not the same. I hope they can do some more configurations and fine tune the new machines soon. I make my own coffee at home mostly but the 7/11 $1 coffee has always been my go-to when we're out of milk, when travelling, or just too tired. While some specialty boutique cafes do make wonderfully crafted barista coffees, I've paid premium prices for horrible coffees as well on many occasions, so can't go wrong with a $1 coffee.

  • +2

no coles servo $1 this is an outrage!

    • Obviously, it is offset by its consistent high fuel prices.

      • dont get fuel at coles it is a rip off but i do stop off to get a $1 long black in which i scan my flybys card so the 10th one is free making it 'really' 90cents a coffee

        • 7-eleven is a reward following your 6th visit. Typically the reward is a choice from a $1 coffee, a $2 iced coffee, a $2 coffee melt, or a slurpee but not sure of the size. Rarely the choice has also included a more expensive item such as a Boss coffee can, a Red Bull, and a couple of years ago a glazed donut was included.

fwiw as per my comment in the other thread 711 H/O said it's fair game to do multiple shots for $1

    https://goat.com.au/coffee/the-official-word-from-7-11-says-…

Perfect for me as I only take my coffee black. Double shot and a splash of hot water to top it off puts a bit of pep in my step.

    Potential $8

    you mean Pretentious $8 FIFY

    • +2

There's a place in Melbourne that will only give you organic full cream milk. I was trying out places when I started a new job and ordered my usual skinny latte only to get the most pretentious twat explaining that I was basically doing coffee wrong.

Coffee tasted like crap too. Or I hadn't ascended to the mustache twirling heights to appreciate it, whichever. It was about $6 in 2018 so I imagine it's well past the $8 mark by now (or more likely the died off).

Anyway, the main post is missing the $3-4 local cafe where you get a chat with the staff and the coffee tastes great. They take a while to find, those places, but they're gold.

Honestly, Maccas is among the best coffee you'll get in Sydney. Certainly some great independent cafes but they are consistently good and fairly priced.

The rich areas are the best place to get it. Think Bondi.

        • +1

Maccas is among the best coffee you'll get in Sydney

          Yeah ……..nah….

  • +1

I rate the 7/11 Cappuccino > McCafe Cappuccino

  • Recently around Melbourne I ordered the 7/11 large coffees and they hardly put any coffee in the cup. Coles Express puts wayyyyy more in and the bean is higher quality.

  • +2

7/11 coffee is better than 90% of country town bakery coffee.

  • +1

How do some places make coffee thermo nuclear hot? It is undrinkable for 2-3 hours.

  • +1

There are 4 7-elevens near my work area and so far I have tried 8 out of the 10 machines. Of those 8, 3 produce good long black, 2 reasonable, and the others are mediocre enough that I’ll wait for a better machine to be available.

Those good machines are on par with the few cafes I have tried, there are two cafes I haven’t tried that everyone claims are really good, however a small long black is $5.80 at one and $6 at the other.

  • Whats coffee price @ EG? There was a 200 EDR pts rebate on it two months ago, but I did not bother.

  • My go to is a long black made in my personal aeropress when I get to work in the morning

  • +1

Managed to get most of the Moccona no 12 capsules from Woolies.
Gets me thru days when there is no free Nespresso demo at HN!

  • +1

Make my own with a stove rocket. Only buy coffee in a social setting and only occasionally is it more to my taste than my rocket coffee.
As an OZB I can estimate my cost per coffee. $0.80 cents or so……

  • -1

i’m too suspicious of how you can sell a supposedly quality product for $1 and still make a profit. Someone is getting ripped off.

I have very few vices in life, so coffee is the one thing i don’t mind spending money on

    • +4

It is a loss leader or no profit item to get customers to topup fuel, or buy other things (if it is just a convenient store).

    • +2

A $1 coffee is close to the true cost of the sale.

A $5 coffee includes the cost of the coffee, cup, wages, payroll tax, insurance, profits, etc.

People have choose to pay cost or a 400% markup.

  • My own made in our Breville 920, only buy coffee if on holidays.

  • +1

I make my coffee at home with a moka pot or manual espresso machine. With current coffee prices it sets me back 50 cents to a dollar depending on which machine I use, and takes about 20 minutes of my time.

  • +1

Robert times instant coffee. $4 on special.

  • I put $8 but the local cafes are all about 5 bucks. Usually just make my own using an AeroPress though.
