7.5% off JB Hi-Fi eGift Cards (Was 5%) + Transaction Fee @ Reward Gateway (Membership Required)

470

Reward Gateway are running a week of daily deals for EOFY. Today it's JB Hi-Fi with an increase of 2.5% on eGift cards.

Here are some of the most common questions that tend to pop up (kudos to WookieMonster for the original writeup):

What is Reward Gateway?

Reward Gateway is an employee program that gives you access to discounted eGift cards and cashback across a large range of retailers.

How do I access Reward Gateway?

Your employer needs to be subscribed to this program before you can apply to access the program. Once you are given access, you can log into Reward Gateway through:

The dedicated website for your company, or The SmartSpending app on iOS/Android devices.

What is the transaction fee?

Transaction fees will vary depending on the type of card used to complete the transaction. The feedback I have been given by their support team is as follows:

MasterCard or Visa debit card: 0%
Standard MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0%
Premium / Platinum MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0.5%
Standard AMEX card: 1.5%
Premium AMEX card: 3%

Can I use prepaid gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards) as a payment method?

No. Reward Gateway requires all debit, credit and prepaid cards to support 3D Secure. Prepaid gift cards do not support 3D Secure, so they will be blocked by the payment processor.

What denominations of JB Hi-Fi eGift cards are available through Reward Gateway?

At the time of posting this deal, you can specify any denomination up to $4999. Larger amounts will be split across multiple cards.

How are the eGift cards delivered?

Electronically. Either print them from your account or use the SmartSpending app to display them on a mobile device. There is also an unique PIN associated with each one which you will need to input when redeeming a card.

Where can I use the eGift cards?

The can be used instore or online. Note that only unlimited cards can be redeemed for online transactions but in-store is limited to 8 per transaction (subject to in-store discretion).

Is there a limit on the number of eGift cards I can buy?

Rewards Gateway will allow you to purchase up to the maximum amount on your first transaction each day, but as a fraud protection on your account the system will limit further transactions to only $300 for that day. Some retailers may also impose monthly limits so check the T&Cs of each one if you plan to spend up big.

Thanks but isn't it still 'cheaper' to go to Woolworths to get some Ultimate Gift Cards for 10% off. Even more when combined with the Coles Mastercard deal for over 17% off?

    • +1

Yes, but Ultimate Gift Cards need to be redeemed in store.

      • -1

Incorrect. You can log into the TCN website (I think that's the website the cards are associated with), and have them exchanged for a code to be used online

        • Nice

        • +4

          We’re not talking about TCN.

TCN and Ultimate are two separate gift card schemes operated by two rival gift card companies (TCN and Blackhawk Network, respectively).

          • TCN currently let you exchange a TCN gift card for a JB Hi-Fi gift card through their gift card exchange portal, but there was a period late last year (just before Black Friday) where JB Hi-Fi was missing from the portal.

          • Blackhawk Network originally had JB Hi-Fi on their gift card exchange portal when the newer Visa versions of Ultimate gift cards were released around October 2021 (if my memory is correct), but it disappeared from the gift card exchange portal around Black Friday 2021 too and has never returned.

          • @WookieMonster: Okay so you can't exchange them for codes that can be used online? Thanks for clarifying

            • @Mr Haj: You currently cannot do that for Ultimate gift cards. However, you could have a go using your Ultimate gift card to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card through JB Hi-Fi’s website. There’s no guarantees it will work, but it may work.

In terms of a pure discount perspective, it is definitely better to go down your route, but it is a lot more effort.

      Your method assumes:

      • Your local Woolworths stores have Ultimate Home/Teens/Kids gift cards in stock. Stock levels have been good in my area, but that is not the same in other parts of Australia.

      • Your local Coles stores actually have Coles Mastercard gift cards in stock. I visited multiple stores and covered nearly 100km over the weekend, but no stores have $250s and some stores also have no $100s.

      • It is much more of a headache to go down your route, particularly if you want to spend more than $100 on JB Hi-Fi online. For example, if you’re living in a regional area more than 100km away from the nearest JB Hi-Fi store (e.g. Ulverstone TAS, Armidale NSW), you cannot easily go into a JB Hi-Fi store to convert your Ultimate gift cards into JB Hi-Fi gift cards. Additionally, JB Hi-Fi online is notorious for letting some JB Hi-Fi gift cards orders paid for with Ultimate gift cards through, yet cancelling other orders.

I’m not saying your suggestion is bad, I’m just saying that it will not work for everyone. A lot of people will happily take a hit in the discount for the sake of convenience, which is why I think this deal is worth posting.

I visited multiple stores and covered nearly 100km over the weekend

        Now that is commitment

    • Yep, on promotion until tomorrow.

  • Event Cinemas gift card is also 20% off today.

  • my mastercards from coles dont seem to work on the rewards gateway, they blocked?

    • I always use mine on there, no issue and no fee either.

    • Yes.

Coles Mastercard gift cards do not support 3D Secure, and Reward Gateway's payment processor mandates a card to support 3D Secure before attempting to redeem funds from a card.

It is also a FAQ in OP's description:

Can I use prepaid gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards) as a payment method?

No. Reward Gateway requires all debit, credit and prepaid cards to support 3D Secure. Prepaid gift cards do not support 3D Secure, so they will be blocked by the payment processor.

      • If Coles is blocked this must be very new. I purchased a Good Guys card on May 17th with my Coles Mastercard.

        • Cards with no 3D Secure support have been blocked on Reward Gateway since October 2021, when the payment processor updated their systems to work with 3D Secure 2.0.

I've been trying multiple times since then with multiple types of prepaid gift cards (including two weeks ago when I first got my hands on the new Coles Mastercard gift cards, a couple of days ago and just now), but I've always received error messages. When I've spoken to Reward Gateway, they've always told me "your card failed the 3DS check".

If you had a Coles Mastercard Gift Card somehow has snuck past those checks, count yourself lucky.

          • @WookieMonster: Where do you get this info from?

            • +1

              @voltagex: Reward Gateway staff themselves.

They were investigating why prepaid gift cards used to work, but then suddenly stopped working. It took a couple of messages between Reward Gateway and their payment processor to get to the bottom of it.

The Reward Gateway staff were confused about my situation, because they thought prepaid cards were always blocked (which was not true for a long time).

              • @WookieMonster: Always love your work WM!

Can confirm the prepaid Coles Mastercard will not work on Reward Gateway, but card from Special worked for me. So a workaround is to buy a gift card from Special and then purchase from Reward Gateway.

                • @Craze: The fact that Special gift cards work is absolutely bizarre. I'll need to investigate that further…

I'm assuming you used a Special Support Shopper gift card?

                  • @WookieMonster: Yep it was the Special "Super Shopper" gift card. Unsure if it's changed since, my transaction was done late April.

                    • @Craze: I just tried to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card on Reward Gateway using a Special Super Shopper gift card with zero balance as the payment method.

Interestingly, it looks like the Special gift card actually passes the 3D Secure check, because the error message I get is consistent with a card using the wrong billing details or with insufficient balance. The error message is not consistent with a card lacking support for 3D Secure.

                      My mind is blown.

@WookieMonster: Good detective work there! ;)

Without knowing the intricacies of 3D secure check (I'm assuming it is linked to card's select prefix numbers, or something to that effect), either Special cards incorporates 3D secure or it's just not set up in Reward Gateway given Special is relatively new (but I'd assume these are all automated in the system).

          • +1

@WookieMonster: The post for this thread did not mention gift cards, only Coles Mastercards. That's what I am referring to.

  • Is there a list of companies that offer rewards gateway membership?

    • I do believe API is the same but its a cost per month for the membership which you can cancel after the first month, cant say i used the public version but the URL takes you to the same pages and this is what they used to be called before the re-brand to Rewards Gateway
      https://join.apilifestyle.com.au/api-membership-application-…

They also used to be the company you can buy the annual discount books if anyone remembers it from that far back :)

It does look like its manually processed so dont count on making this deal, but just the WW and Coles redeems alone would cover the costs IMHO
