    • It's all about the wingspan baby, albatrosses get all the chicks

until the albatross is released in a future expansion I guess I will have to play solo

It's what kept them open through covid

Oceanana expansion is worth the price, improved game play and all birds you know

    • +1

From memory I think it might also address the egg exploitation move you can do in base game (eggsploitation?).

      • +1

The Oceania boards balance the "lay eggs" action with the other two rows, so it's not quite so overpowered.

I would second the Oceania expansion being worth it, mainly because it's a great game made even better when you know the birds. With two players, we usually use only the Oceania birds, rather than mixing them in with the base game birds.

Also, there's an app available that plays the birdsong for you when you point your camera at a card: Wingsong. Can also improve the bird-watching fun.

        • Anyone know where cheapest for the Oceania expansion is ATM?

        • The other big feature/QOL is fixing the food issue where there is no food toy want so you doktn want to waste action and you just wait till other player cycles the food tray. It's more a 2 player problem, but I find the game is really good 2p.

    • The first couple of times I played with the Oceania expansion. When I got the base game and played without it, it felt like a bit of a grind getting all the food you need.

I do think it requires more skill (and probably luck) to play (win?) without Oceania, but I find it more enjoyable with. There are definitely people who prefer it without Oceania though.

      • We use a lot of modifications when we play Wingspan, all designed to speed up the start of the game. At the extreme end of things, we've actually enjoyed playing with dealing out 10 bird cards and keeping all of them, keeping all 5 food that you start with, and placing immediately before play 2 of your birds down on the board. We've found that these really help to speed up the game and ensure that you have enough time to get your engine really roaring before the game ends. We found the original rules extremely frustrating in that it seemed like you were just about to get a good food/egg engine happening when the game would end. This way we often get to fill the board with bird cards and get through some decent egg laying etc. We've even experimented with adding an extra turn to each of the 4 rounds. If you look up the forums, there's heaps of different ways people play the game, all designed to speed up an otherwise excruciatingly slow start to the game and the way too early finish :) It's by far one of our favourite games.

  • Thank God for solo mode!

You play board games by yourself?

      • +3

        Why not?

You climb out from under your bridge to post comments on ozbargain bY yOuRsElF?!?

      • There are actually solo board games.

You should also check out Scythe (created by the same board game company) that also has the 'automa' mode.

Even Gloomhaven, which is the top-ranked overall game on BGG, can be played solo - which is unashamedly my favourite way of playing it. 😊

If ur like me and have no friends to play with I'd highly recommend the switch/pc version!

    • The PC version is beautiful, and the first (European) expansion has recently been added as DLC.

The automata (solo) rules are fine, but I prefer playing against AI opponents.

    $35 for Oceania atm.
Worth it? Looks to be ATL

    • Yes, see above

  • If anyone is interested the digital version is $14.49 (50% off) on GOG. Also, $18.49 for special edition with European expansion.

    • Edit: Special edition only includes expansion on steam. Gog special edition doesn't include expansion. Go figure?

  • How does this version compare with the Oceania expansion and Swift Start set? Can't seem to work out if that's the full game or not

    • +3

The linked (base) game comes with the Swift Start pack (it's included in all except the first printings, if I remember correctly). It's just a few extra cards and instruction sheets to walk players through their first four turns (lowers the barrier for entry).

The Oceania expansion requires the base game to play, but includes additional bird cards (Australian/New Zealand birds), more eggs, a new food type (nectar), and boards that take advantage of the new food type and adjust the actions slightly.

    • +1

The one with the Swift Start pack is the base game. It's included in all copies of the base game.
It's 10 extra bird cards and 4 walkthrough booklets (1 for each player) that steps you through your first few turns to help you learn the game. Don't think there's much use for it if you already know how to play but you can put those extra birds in with all of the other ones once you're done with it.

There's two expansions: Europe and Oceania, both require the base game and mainly just add more birds.

      • +1

Expansion number three is to be announced in the next couple of months, most likely to be South America or Africa, as Elizabeth, the game designer, was asking on Facebook about people's favourite birds from those regions a while back.

Cards from the Swift Pack are identifiable by a small grey corner marking of the card, top right i believe.

  • +2

The Switch version is also good. Great relaxing music.

    • On sale at the moment for $17.70 until the 29th, second lowest price it's been. It was cheaper at $15 last month. Seems to go on sale fairly regularly.

      • Its great value at $15

  • Thanks OP! Been waiting for a chance to grab it since the (mostly) non available kmart deal.

  • +1

Along with azule and risk, another board game to sit in my cupboard :)

    • …risk, another board game to sit in my cupboard :)

That's where Risk (and Monopoly) belongs. Never to see the light of day.

Unless it is Risk Legacy, in which case all is forgiven.

  • Oceania and European expansions are also on sale! Which one's better?

    • Oceania, because it has the Ibis, and wait till you see it's Power

    • We've got both and enjoy them pretty equally. Each set has unique bird powers which are pretty cool. If you're not playing with modified rules designed to speed the game up and get your engine started a bit quicker, then Oceania can seem more fun because with the nectar it's easier to get food and get birds down on the board.
