New York Times Basic Digital Subscription A$2 Every 4 Weeks ($0.50/Week, up to a Year) @ New York Times

1107

It's been about a year since the last deal was shared so thought I'd highlight that it was still around when I purchased just now.

NYT is obviously not everyone's cup of tea - that's fair. But I like it and think they do a pretty good job across a range of issues. You can check out Mediabiasfactcheck if you want to take a look at their bias and credibility. Shout out to pretz in a previous deal for highlighting the resource.

The Basic Digital Subscription does not include recipes or crosswords. Just the online edition and through their app. Price reverts after the first year so make sure to cancel before then.

TBH you need your news from all sides of politics to be well informed. As long as you know you'll be reading a heavily biased and left wing news outlet, then you'll also be smart enough to fact check their articles as needed (i.e. get the full truth, and not just some of the truth that suits their narrative), as well as to read opposing view points.

    • +1

      Is this called balanced diet?

    • +12

Sorry, but it's easier to call something fake news than it is to bother with using critical thinking or investing in media literacy.

      • +1

        or investing in media literacy.

        Whatever that means…

    • +16

a heavily biased and left wing news outlet

Funniest thing I've read today. FYI liberals aren't LW, and both the D & GQP are RW in practise.

According to Media Bias Fact Check…

They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by appeals to emotion or stereotypes) to favor liberal causes. […] They are considered one of the most reliable sources for news information due to proper sourcing and well-respected journalists/editors. The failed fact checks were on Op-Eds and not straight news reporting.

Why has OzB suddenly attracted all the loonies?

Why has OzB suddenly attracted all the loonies?

i don't know, what drew you here ?

      • +5

While I don't disagree with your sentiment, I wish people would stop citing 'media bias fact check' as a quality source, when it's just another person's opinion with no working shown, and they bought a domain name to make their opinion seem more credible somehow.

FYI liberals aren't LW, and both the D & GQP are RW in practise.

The funniest thing about the left is how much they struggle with how the left and right paradigm works. Thanks for the laugh.

I don't see Democrats passing BBB and universal healthcare…

Or stopping the subsidisation of rich people's hobbies…

Or stopping the funding of the war machine…

Or having meaningful tax reform (Republicans want to increase the burden on low and middle income families; they've been financially squeezed enough).

          • +1

            @Techie4066:

            I don't see Democrats passing BBB and universal healthcare…Or… Or… Or…

Cool, so now explain what any of that has to do with the Left/Right paradigm of the political spectrum… because all you've done here is confirmed my point.

            • +1

@1st-Amendment: Why? The US is a capitalist oligarchy enabled by Democrats and Republicans. It's government by billionaire state capture.

          • @Techie4066: You need to start learning the underlying mechanisms of politics which will help you answer your own questions. If you're unable to understand how campaign donations impact policies, then you'll never understand why the Democrats haven't acted on many of the policies you've mentioned. Their hands are tied by many corporate interests, including big tech, which you should also understand. This is also true of Republicans, the NRA being one such example. This is publicly available information.

            • @wizzlesticks: Yup, I called the US a capitalist oligarchy on another comment. The only Democrat saving grace is the Progressive caucus imo.

              • +1

@Techie4066: I wish Australia was immune to it, but we are similar in so many ways. But it seems the US has it down to an art form. It's probably why the Democrats would never allow a Bernie Sanders candidate to rise to power.

              @wizzlesticks:

This is also true of Republicans, the NRA being one such example.

Not a great example, since the NRA is a membership-based organisation rather than a privately owned corporation.

              • @1st-Amendment: Yes true, Wall St companies (i.e. public) would be more appropriate. Let's say SAF-T-Hammer Corporation then. But you get my point…

              • @1st-Amendment:

NRA is a membership-based organisation rather than a privately owned corporation.

Directly funded by big gun manufacturers and funding a revolving door of lobbyists inside and out - and in government. It's funny that you're suddenly naïve here.

Directly funded by big gun manufacturers

Which ones specifically? And how much do each of them contribute?

Or this yet another one of those 'I think it, therefore it is true' things?

It's funny that you're suddenly naïve here.

Naive would be to make a claim without a shred of evidence to support it. You know exactly what you just did here lol…

                  • @1st-Amendment: wilful naivety

They do a lot of the gun industry's dirty work, you can't argue that they're any less insidious than

"Gillibrand: The NRA is largely funded by the gun manufacturers.” Facts First: Gillibrand is incorrect. The NRA is not “largely funded” by gun makers."

"Membership dues totaling $175,577,863 contributed the largest percentage"

"The lion’s share of NRA funding comes from approximately 5,000,000 grass roots members of the National Rifle Association"

                      • @1st-Amendment: And a lobby group that donates and branch stacks is any different to Wall St influence… How?

And you might want to actually read the article I sent. Bye.

      • +1

Using Media Bias Fact Check as a reliable indicator is like NYT citing an AP article as their fact checking source (incidentally this actually happens, and has nothing to do with opinion).

Liberals will say it's not biased. Conservatives will say it us biased. Anyone else who says otherwise is naive.

        • +1

Alright, where's your media bias checker? Is NYT not neoliberal? Where does neoliberalism fit in the traditional political spectrum?

          • +2

@Techie4066: You could spend all day checking if you like. The consensus is pretty clear. But most would agree that the NYT's fact content is around 70%. Higher than the industry average, but the mainstream average is nothing to aspire to, unfortunately.

A perfect example is how their stories about Ukraine suddenly changed to suit current popular opinion. They had relentless, ongoing articles (not all of which were op eds) about the corruption in Ukraine. This had been going on for more than 5 years, but suddenly stopped when the narrative changed. Even if you're naive, you should be able to see right through that.

            • +2

@wizzlesticks: I understand where you're coming from on Ukraine (despite the fact their government isn't really in operation right now, and imo a democracy with corrupt actors is better than no democracy). In fact, I think NYT constantly plays an advocacy role for Democrats in their news reporting, and the military industrial complex when it's convenient.

      • +2

It's just posts like this attract them way out of proportion as it's an opportunity to spew rubbish 'on-topic'. I think on average most OzB are reasonable.

    • What if politics is a circle, and has only one side? And voting is an illusion of choice? And what if I don’t have an OzBargain alert set up and I miss something big?

    • +6

no idea how you could consider NY Times left wing

      • -2

no idea how you could consider….

At least you admit that you have no idea. That is the first step to progress…

The only news website I check regularly is ozbargain; run by the people, for the people.

It’s about time they started charging a subscription fee to keep the riff-raff out

But what about poor old Aussie battlers on struggle street or the mum and dad investors?

  • -2

A STRONG paper speaks for CCP Xi! Totally Love it!!

  • +4

PRO TIP: to read any NYT article for free, open one in a browser and click/tap the stop button just before it loads the paywall.

  • +1

Wait, Ozbargain isn't peak neolib? I'm both impressed and slightly surprised.

    • +3

It's a fair mix of anti-imperialists and a growing crowd of alt-rights I'd say. Or perhaps they're just loud here and about Ukraine.

      • +1

Yeah we're basically on a unity ticket where Ukraine is concerned. I think the intercept published a video of the White house press corps gallery asking for a no fly zone like it was the mount splashmore episode of The Simpsons - like if they asked for it 700 times Biden was just going to give it to them. Given that the NYT has gone along with war just a out every time it has mattered, I think it's fair to say the neolibs are pro war faction these days.

  • +3

They're all cut from the same cloth. Whether it's Fox news or NYT, they'll lie and push their agenda.

  • -1

    Fake news

  • +2

Won't pay for an extremely biased news source.
Unsubscribing is difficult too. They will make you go through chat and support to unsubscribe.

  • +12

This thread dead set looks like it has been infiltrated by Russian bots. I'm almost tempted to check post counts.

    • +5

Yeah I've never seen ozbargain so pilled and triggered before. It's bizarre.

      • +1

Any time there is a Murdoch related deal ozbargain is very triggered

        • +2

          Luckily this isn't Murdoch trash.

    • +3

This thread dead set looks like it has been infiltrated by Russian bots.

Where 'Russian bots ' means 'opinions I disagree with'?

    • +1

Russian bots on OzBargain LOL. That sounds like a paranoid left wing conspiracy theory.

  • +8

Such a good deal. I have no complaints regarding the paper. Some of their specials features are the best journalism you will find in the world.

  • +1

quick come get your daily dose of brainwash

  • -1

No thanks, i already get enough unsolicited right wing media shite in my inbox, why would i pay for it lol.

    • Please provide evidence of it being a right wing source?

      • +1

Neoliberalism is the brainchild of the US two-party heavily-right-leaning echo chamber. In a global context, and a global political compass, you have pure capitalism (+socialism for the rich) on the right and unadulterated communism on the left. The world is dominated by neoliberalism which ppl see as the norm, but it's really not leftist by any means.

In the messed US political context, yep NYT is essentially considered centre-left. In terms of social progressivism that might be accurate.

  • +2

Thanks OP, worth noting this is only for new subscribers.

NYT wanted $120 for a renewal after my first year; but when I went to cancel it they offered $0.50/week to keep me; I cancelled anyway and then was able to avail the $20/annual afterwards. Thanks @banterbants

  • +3

I got a subscription a while ago and have been happy - some great coverage in there, detailed, nuanced articles, especially the longer features. I have heard that unsubscribing can be hard though.

    • I thought so too, but if you login on PC and go to your account and go to the subscriptions overview tab, down the very bottom is Cancel your subscription and you can just click cancel

  • +1

If possible would recommend signing up with Paypal- means you can just cancel the recurring transaction in PP, rather than having to call to cancel.

  • -2

Dear Uncle Sam wants to wash your dirty brain, hair and soul to make you to be a “better” man, just buy it.

  • It is trivially easy to bypass the NY Times paywall.

So, if you are going to pay for it, then that means you are effectively making a charity donation to support the newspaper. And if you are going to do that, then you might as well pay full price so they get some more money, instead of taking advantage of this deal.

  • Fake news!!!!

    • +2

imagine making that your whole personality

      • Imagine playing video games in your 30's

        • ? I'm 23 and I rarely play video games lol

Paying for fake news? no deal pls

  • +5

Crikey there are a lot of rightards come out to play here.

The NYTimes is one of the great publications but American politics lost a lost of interest for me after President Pants-On-Fire lost.

  • +4

Plenty of stupid opinion articles in the times, but they have excellent investigative journalism and their daily podcast is great. Good price for a year.

  • +1

Propaganda news can piss off !!

  • To the naysayers: what’s a better news source?

    • +1

      They don't have any.
