So Are You Getting The New PS Plus Extra/Deluxe Membership?

All deets here

https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2022/05/new-playstation-plus-a…

Around 700 games on the top tier membership, but $155 a year seems hefty. That's almost as much as a movie streaming service ala Netflix or Stan, and even as a heavy gamer I find myself using those way more than my gaming consoles.

Also, apparently Australia getting a watered down version of what the US or Europe is getting. Something I heard about no access to Ps3 games for us and no PS Now.

I might wait for a year to see how it gets along. The only thing that will make it worthwhile for me is if they add at least 1 free AAA game ($40+ value) per year. I already have Last of Us, God of War, Days Gone, and the other AAA games you get free on PS Plus but I just can't find the excitement to play them.

Nope. I have a physical disc collection for PS4 and PS5 games with nothing on Extra I don't have that's of interest so far. No interest in PS3 or previous gen games so Deluxe is out too.

Deluxe isn't watered down, it's the same as Premium but excludes PS3 streaming titles as there's no PS Now here. It's also cheaper to compensate for that.

Note that games will rotate and new additions expected middle of every month so that may change.

Meanwhile, physical forever. Much prefer to own my games than rent them.

Also, it's best to link to direct sources of information that rehosted blogs so here's the official PS information:

    • I was thinking of reselling some of my physical games to make back the money as they are included in the free PS Plus library.

Returnal and Demon Souls fetch a decent price.

    • Is it really rentals though? I'm curious how these games work, will you be able to download them to your console storage (like the Monthly Free Games) or do you just access them through a gated software (like Nintendo Expansion Pak).

Not too sure how these passes work, never had one.

It's the exact same as previous PS Now and Xbox GamePass works. Think Netflix/Prime Video style.

You pay the subscription fee and during that period, there's a selection of games available to download (or stream - but not in Aus) and play. You maintain access to the games while you are still subscribed and while the games are still on the service. Over time, games may be taken off the service and/or replaced with others (they said changes will happen middle of every month).

You own nothing and have no continued access to any games that leave the service. Or if your subscription lapses.

Unlike the monthly PS+ free games which remain in your library even if they leave the month's rotation but as long as your PS+ subscription is active. That's a completely different thing and remains available for PS+ Essential and above.

as long as your PS+ subscription is active

Are you saying if I cancel PS Plus, I won't be able to play the games I previously downloaded for free?

Are you sure about this? I thought the games were saved to your hard drive so you can launch them regardless of your membership status. Ie, I can still play the games when my internet is down, so the system wouldn't be able to verify my membership.

@SlavOz: Yes, you need an active PS+ subscription to play else will show a lock sign and unable to start the game. You should get a 14-day license for offline play as long as subscription is active.

I have far too many free PSPlus and Epic games that I need to finish before I even start to think about paying for any more…

Same, i think I've reached the limit of what's acceptable in terms of quantity.
I should instead be looking for Quality, because my time is important. The same goes for Movies as well, my OCD can't help not have a full-collection, but that clashes against the Logical Part of my Brain.

So I'm actually coming full-circle. I think PlayStation might be the best platform (with Nintendo coming second, and Xbox distant third). There is a decent selection on PlayStation, but notably it has more "Quality" than crapware. And the "must play" titles that majority of people enjoy today, well it comes to that platform first.

As an analogy, think of Game of Thrones. It was a massive phenomenon, probably at it's height around 2013-2015. Imagine someone just starting the series now, it's a whole different atmosphere. Especially since the death of the series in 2019.

On the platform of a Gaming PC, most of those "must play" titles don't come or they come much later. Depending on the title, it is rarely available on Day 1, but sometimes it arrives +1 year (exclusive period), and more often +5 years later due to a port/remaster or emulation. That's what makes me think a Gaming PC is not the best platform.

But if that huge limitation doesn't bother you, then Gaming PC might be worth it to you. After all, it objectively has the most quantity of titles (DOS, Xp, Windows10, Web/Flash Games) and backwards compatibility. Also it plays most consoles (Atari, Coleco, TGfx16, WonderSwan, Sega Master/Mega, S/NES, GBA, PS1, N64, DS, DreamCast, PSP, PS2, 3DS, GameCube, Xbox, 360, PS Vita, PS3, WiiU, Switch, PS4). Well, the PS Vita and PS4 emulation is still a Work-in-Progress, but the others run surprisingly well.

I'm on the fence, but probably not.

I've looked through the list of games at launch and frankly there's nothing I'd want to play (or haven't already played). I suppose I'd play Ape Escape (PS1) for nostalgia, but that alone isn't going to cut it.

I'm pretty much in the same boat tbh. I want to like this offering, but I just don't see the value for me personally. I might keep my PS Plus sub on the Essentials level, but really don't see myself going any higher than that.

I am thinking of getting the PS Plus Extra as I just got my PS5 a month ago. Never owned a PS before so don't have a library yet. So I have been holding on buying titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, Last of US etc as they will be part of the library.

  • I could probably trade a few of the games I own that are included with the new Plus and pay for a yearly subscription that way. I am tempted to do that to access a larger library but not if they are going to rotate games out every 5 minutes and I have to play titles by a certain time or miss out. Wish Sony were a bit more transparent with how that's going to work.

  • I have about 1 and a half years of standard ps plus that i got for $59 and I split it with a mate and they share via game sharing. So considering upgrading to the deluxe and paying less to upgrade (since I only paid $59 for base membership) and just pay a fraction of the rrp

  • It’s all vapourware until we see the product released and the games available. Until then it doesn’t bare thinking about. I may be willing to sign up for a month here and there if there is a specific game I want to play, but buying discs second hand and reselling them seems like a more sensible option.

  • Still waiting for a PS Plus discount

  • I will convert whatever months I have left to extra and then decide based on what is being added to the coming months

  • yes, only cause two ps5 games are available, I want to play but have not yet played yet, and that's less then the cost of buying the two separately. To see if I keep it active after this, is another question.

  • So, it’s getting released tomorrow?

    • It's live as of this morning.

      • well… I upgraded to deluxe and I am regretting it.
on the order screen it said it comes with cloud streaming (have a photo) and I got all excited to get ps1, ps2 and ps3 games but then it didn't have any of that, just a tiny bit of remastered games. I contacted Sony asking for a refund on the upgrade fee. if I get refund then ill just upgrade to extra as I think that has a bit of value in it

        • Probably a marketing error on the PS store since it was announced that Australia won't be getting the cloud streaming service.

Deluxe doesn't seem worth it right now. The Classic games don't seem to add any value - Nintendo is having a hard time selling cult classics like Zelda and Mario games in their memebrship service, why would someone pay to play Tekken from the 90s?

Extra really seems like a no brainer though. Just an extra $50 on top of the regular package and the list of games avaliable is great. There's already like 5 games I've had on my wishlist that I can now play for free. It's got YS VIII, The Surge, The Surge 2, Gravity Rush, Ellex, etc.

          • @SlavOz: Well, I’m hoping that they cough up and refund the difference because of the error on their part. The deluxe is an absolute rip off in Australia currently but the extra is definitely 100% worth it for a lot of people because of the amount of free games. So I’m going to switch to that if I get a refund

  • Just went through the email. $155 to upgrade to the 2nd tier for 7 years. I've bought a year everytime it pops up on OZB.

Is everyone getting a similar offer?

  • Went up to extra which seems good value, would go deluxe for ape escape but it's glitchy on PS5 and you'd think if they were going to offer it they'd make sure all games were running properly

  • I got it for their ps4 library, even though I have a capable pc and xbox game pass. Only buy like 3-5 day 1 or recent releases these days since most games that release now are just polished turds gameplay and graphics wise. A lot of the ps4 games in the collection still retail for quite a lot on pc, so I thought it was a good comprimise playing them on console then having to purchase them on pc.

I'm not really a fan of the gaming subscription services. My backlog is already huge, I don't really need to pay for a subscription just to add to it. I'd rather put that money towards buying games I actually want when they're on sale. At least that way they'll be there for me whenever I finally get around to them. Otherwise stuff I want to play will probably fall out of the service long before I get time to play it.

  • Merged from PS Plus Upgrades - Worth It?

I had a look at what Sony would like to charge me for upgrading to their new service for the remaining 6 months of my PS Plus subscription (which currently expires on 25/12/2022).

To upgrade to PlayStation Plus Extra it would cost me $81.97, for Deluxe it'd be $111.78

Initially I though this was a total rort, but on reading the detail, this is for 18 months so actually looks to be a decent deal at least for the Extra level, as I'd not be paying much less than that to get the next year's sub for the base level.

I'm not convinced by the Deluxe offering, as paying an extra $30 to play demos is taking the piss, and I doubt I'd be using the Classics collection much.

I appreciate that using other countries is cheaper, but for those who cannot be bothered to jump through the hoops this looks reasonable.

    • You're the only one that can answer if something is "worth it" to you. If PS+ Extra has content that you are interested in then sure. If not, like Premium, then no.

    • Honestly I feel its quite expensive for me. There's a few on there thats interesting and I might get it for a short while for some games. But it will definitely be a "if certain games are available" sort of thing. My other issue being that if its an older game, its likely cheap on EBGames/elsewhere and if its a new game it probably won't be on Extra for ages (and I'd probably get it before then if I'm that interested to play it). So its really only now where they've put in some bigger games that it may be interesting (say I'd probably give demons souls, valhalla and Miles Morales a go).
I agree with deluxe though, way too much for some classics and demos, very much not worth it to me.
