$470 for a Year's Web Hosting, That's Expensive Right?

Just got billed for my wife's Wix website for the next year - $470.00 (this works out to $39 / Month over 12 Months).

I can't believe how expensive that is. Seriously, who pays that??? Must be a heck of a lot in the conversion from $USD to $AUD.

Sure, it makes a nice looking website, but surely there is something better out there? Why do people keep paying these ridiculous prices?

I'm assuming the yearly rate works out cheaper than the monthly rate, but $470 sure is a lot.

Aren't the first 3 poll options practically identical to each other?

    for a Year's Web Hosting

With Wix it's not just hosting. You are paying a premium to have access to all of its other functions that allow a trained monkey to create and modify a pretty slick website.

If you want cheap then build a WordPress site using free templates and host on obble for ~$30pa.

Why do people keep paying these ridiculous prices?

    Simplicity and lazy man tax

  • IONOS is USD $6 for a year for unlimited websites and storage.

    https://www.ionos.com/hosting/web-hosting?ar=1#plans

It does not come with Wix's automated idiot-proof site builder but you can decide if that's worth $460 a year to you. If not, build a standard Wordpress site with endless plugins and functionality.

Why do people keep paying these ridiculous prices?

Because they can charge it. You/your wife are proof of that.

  • I host my own WordPress which, according to many here, is a rip-off at $108 per annum. But it's Aussie based and great support, features etc (10GB). I get many people cant/won't deal with CPanel but there does come a point where you have to take the next step.

I would never, ever pay for a Wix, WordPress.com or similar site.

    • Which hosting company?

      • Ventra IP atm but I go wherever it's a good deal, reliable and local.

Onlyfans would be cheaper and more revenue

on the page you linked isn't that just for the VIP version? Any reason you can't go $15 a month combo ($180). I mean its still pricey but more manageable then close to $500.

Get her to pay for it

  • How much money does she make from her website?

Is it a million dollars a week? If so then the $470 is money well spent and probably a tax deduction.

      Is techfixes wife underpaid?

  • Just fire up a t2.nano on aws, only like $5 a month, username checks out so pretty sure you can figure out the rest.

    • Pretty sure if someone has to ask OzBargain if their hosting bill is too much, they can't figure out a vps,

  • you took the lolly
now go ahead and stand up to the consequences !

  • Can host elsewhere way cheaper, but Wix won't release the website code to you, so start looking elsewhere (like WordPress, Joomala, NUKE, etc)

If it's just an informational website, Google Sites is a free website building tool :P

My good ole free CMS go-to is RavenNUKE v2.52.00: https://www.ravenphpscripts.com/

    Depends:

What is your wife's website about?
    - Portfolio?
    - E-commerce?
    - Service businesss?

Here is my opinion as I am a graphic designer and I sell online too
    - Squarespace: Great for portfolios, easy to use and ok for e-commerce
    - Shopify: Best for e-commerce (this is what I use)
    - Wix: Is a bit of both, it's intended for average users to design and sell.

Conclusion: It's only a rip-off if you're not getting value for the per-year subscription

    Example, me:
Squarespace: I paid $624AUD for the top, advance commerce yearly plan with no additional app add-ons such as the e-marketing addon
Shopify: I paid $470AUD for the basic yearly plan + $318AUD for adds I need, totally to $788AUD per year. Different $164AUD more than SS.

But shopify is worth it for me cause I generate more sales, shopify has a faster server, alot of apps, shopify has alot of cusomisation to a store, better user experience.

With these website builders, you're paying a premium cause there's a whole company behind these servers. But Wix isn't a bad website builder at all, it just depends what your wife is using it for and if it's worth it to her.

    There's other websites such as:
    Godaddy
    Weebly
    Zyro - I think it's new… I only heard of it

The problem you face is that you may have to rebuild / copy and paste content from Wix if you leave to the other website builder and who knows, is the other website builder better than wix?

  • You can use a student code to get half price off, I don't think it works on business plan tho.

  • I built a website on justfolio and have a domain purchased through crazy domains

Justfolio disappeared after so many years and they didn’t inform us.. so I lost everything:(

I tried to recreate the website on wix using screenshots and web archive dot org that had thankfully captured it a few times, not knowing I’d have issues with linking the domain to wix…

Crazy domains said contact wix to get dns a record numbers off them so they can be entered into the system.

So I finally managed to get through to wix.. overseas call for over an hour ..”don’t worry I’ll help you “ .. 45 mins later oh you got to upgrade to premium plan for me to give you some numbers.. at least $15/month 2gb

Seems kinda $$ for some numbers

So now is there a way to export my wix site that took me a few weeks to rebuild to another host that isn’t so expensive that will give me the dns etc to give to crazy domains? And to which host please? I read many talk about Wordpress but I don’t think they are the same …, or other Wordpress alternatives please? It is for an electrician

    Thanks

  • In short, no Wix sites can only be hosted by them. You can export the content but that is all.
For what its worth our hosting at CPK Web Services starts at $480 per year $500 with an au domain but that is also a fully managed offering in that we make sure the clients Wordpress software is kept up to date and patched and we support a range of other systems as well.
Long story short if your willing to put some work in yourself you can save quite a bit of money. But if your a busy business owner that wants stuff to be managed by someone else more qualified you need to pay a bit extra.
For what its worth the USD to AuD conversion rate is rubbish at the moment so try and avoid buying anything from the US.
I know easier said then done.
particularly as some of our vendors are US based.
The pricing above is just to point out that some Australian providers are more expensive as well, it all comes down to what your comfortable doing.

  • If you want something basic wordpress.com should be able to get you up and going with a basic blog site that you can turn into a photo gallery with some templates.
You can get photography themes for Wordpress as an example, though a managed package from an Au based provider may work out cheaper.
    https://themeforest.net/item/foto-photography-wordpress-them… as an example.
So to clarify you install Wordpress on your hosting account and then install one of those themes.
    Then add in your content.
Your hosting provider can give you the correct DNS.
