Can I buy, make a single “purchase” myself of $500 and then own the terminal for $7?

    • +1

      But why?

      • +52

Wave it around random peoples pockets/bags on public transport and hope to get lucky?

        • +4

Pretty simple to track who owns it. Unless you plan to leave the country forever

          • +4

@mbck: Do you know from experience?

            • +4

@easylife: You need to lodge your details to have pos. This includes your bank details, linked to your original information.

Any variation would mean a rejected application. I know because I had to do it.

It'll be easy to track who lodged the pos.

(Point of sale, not the other one)

There's a reason why scammers want gift card instead of bank transfer (which works similarly to pos)

              • +2

@mbck: well just let someone else does money, but you just transfer him the money.

              • @mbck: Money mules exist for this reason.

                • @Sheng: Yeah well it isn't as simple as just taping the device on the back pocket then right?

You've got to find the right person. Figure out how to do the transfer, etcetc.

And every point of that will have a chance of you stuffing up.

By all means go ahead if it's simple, don't just talk lol

Can I signup via referral, make a single "purchase" of $500 and earn $93?

      • +13

        There’s the OzBargin spirit!

      • Based on the referral T&C's would I think not.

Referral Rewards cannot be redeemed in conjunction with any other Zeller offer or promotion.

      • +1

Hey, I thought the same but people starting saying how you have to pay tax etc which makes it non viable (unless if you're below threshold). I called the customer support and emailed the rep for written confirmation and they've said

Yes, you may be eligible for both Promos, provided that you follow the guidelines below.

Your account will be valid for the referral bonus if you signed up through a referral link. Once you begin transacting, you and the person who referred you will be eligible to receive the $100 bonus.

        • I just emailed them and they said it's not possible to get both promotions

"Zeller has the right to refuse eligibility for this offer at it's discretion"

I wouldn't try it, they'll props smack you with this and then you're out $300

They also get 1.4% of your $500, its a win-win for them to cuck you.

      • 1.4% isn't bad compared to the likes of Square and PayPal. A bank probably won't give you much less than 1% for the typical transaction.

        • +1

Depending on the type of transaction. Debit Visa/MC are usually below 1%, closer to 0.5%, with most banks I've seen.
Currently on non-premium Visa credit I'm being charged 1.3%.

1.4% here is cheaper than all credit MC transaction types though.

      • Cuck lol

      • , its a win-win for them to cuck you

Well played. Bypassing the ozb word filter

        • +4

          That's an actual word…

    • Once you sell it, purchaser will be locked out for sure!
Tried to activate a Paypal here I bought from second hand and got locked out!

    • NO! read conditions!

  • +10

This is pretty tempting. Jack Dorsey is a bit of a dick and Square have higher rates. This looks good, thanks OP.

    • Why is Jack Dorsey a bit of a dick?

      • +29

Not huge on his move buying afterpay and seems like he is becoming a bit of an Elon Musk from Wish politically. His attempts to back crypto seem a bit desperate to maintain value of a ponzi scheme - things like adding bitcoin to square and this bullshit he is doing with Jay-Z reeks of a crypto whale playing the market and making money off people entering their unregulated marketplaces. Scammy behaviour from someone with plenty of money already.

        • +3

I suspect they were questioning the

          A bit of a

          Part.

        • -1

Crypto Jesus? (Elon Musk - Electric Jesus)

    • +1

      what about tyro ?

      • Haven't really looked at them tbh.

      • +3

Terminal rental is $29 or $39 (fixed or mobile) + GST per month. So $383 or $515 per year. A terminal will likely last you 3-5 years. So you'd pay about bare minimum $1k for the terminal, quite likely over $2k.

Unless you know of a free terminal deal?

They don't seem to list a per transaction flat or percentage fee on their site so no idea on that front.

        • Tyro is expensive and an outdated offering. Forget those dinosaurs

        • +1

From memory Tyro are 1.1% up to 20k a month. Larger accounts they negotiate individually.

        • +1

Ask your bank what they offer to their business customers. You also get good support from your bank, they will treat it like it's their own system.

    • +2

Also Square don't really put a lot of effort into their extra features like the POS app, you still can't reorder tabs without deleting them all and populating them by hand again. It's like the innovation stopped dead many years ago.

  • +5

Could just wait for iPhone to release theirs.

    • That feature is only for those who have an Apple Card from memory.

    • they only have a payment solution, lack a POS system

    • +4

The New Tap to Pay on iPhone feature that they've integrated into the upcoming software updates and are rolling out in the US first will allow any cards or digital wallets to be tapped on an iPhone to accept payment.

You will need to have a merchant agreement with one of the supported providers to be able to take payments in this manner.

    • Anything stopping paying using Coles Visa cards over and over. Besides AML?

    • Sounds like a plan. Would this work?

  • Do you require an ABN for an account?

    • -4

      No

      • +1

It asked me for my abn and a million other details. And even verified that

  • +1

Darn…just bought a terminal couple weeks ago lol

  • +2

Needs A LOT of personal details doesn't it?

    • +3

About the same as getting a business credit card

    • +1

Yeah, there's pretty bad AML requirements for this sort of thing.

  • Pay just 1.4%

You can pay a lot less than that elsewhere so this free terminal will cost you money in the long term

    • +6

      whats cheaper?

      • +1

Spaceflight: "Okay, so that'll be just $6.95 thanks. Here's my BSB and account number"

      • The merchant fee elsewhere

    • +4

      Where is elsewhere?

      • wondering the same

      • -1

        elsewhere
in, at, or to some other place or other places.

    • What’s cheaper elsewhere?

      • -1

        The merchant fee

    • ?Elsewhere cheaper what's

    • 1.4% seems to be the norm. Square charge the same. I use Shopify POS (Using a WisePad 3 machine) which is also 1.4% for me.

      • +1

Go with a bank then, you can get merchant fees around 0.5% with a decent turnover.

CBA is 1.1% which is already less than 1.4%

        • Most of the time the banks merchant services charge a terminal fee. It looks like CBA has free terminal rental for 6 months and $25+ a month after that.

There may also be an account fee for whatever account you have linked to it.

So you have to factor those into the lower %. If you get the Zeller, there's no account fee and no rental.

        • +1

I'm happy with my situation. I don't make enough of a turnover to justify a bank POS.

Zeller/Square/Shopify are better suited for us small business/sole traders

  • +2

1.4% is almost double what I pay with the NAB….

    • Its usually around 0.4% to 0.6% fees for visa or mastercard

      • rental ? they probably dropped it alot by now…

      • Do mastercard/visa still charge an "access fee" for each transaction?

      • Is that credit transactions? Cause that's what I'm getting with NAB on debit MC/Visa transactions.

    • +1

Isn't NAB 1.15% plus your monthly terminal fee? Might be cheaper depending on number of unique transactions

    • +2

You will have variable fees though. 1.4% here includes premium Mastercard and Visa along with AmEx.

      • CBA do 1.1% flat

        • Admittedly it’s been a few years since I’ve had a terminal (I was with TYRO) so that’s quite an incredible rate from a big 4. Thanks for letting me know. Happy to see fees are dropping.

    • What I pay is variable so its hard to work out but from what worked out im paying $25 less with NAB (my last statement) than I would using this eftpos…

So I guess its not that bad.

  • Anyone know tyro fee?

  • +13

can someone just tell the asian restaurants and supermarket all get this one…i want to use my card.

    • +2

      Cash only buisness

      Cash is King.

    • +9

Yes, because cash only businesses are only worried about processing fees.

    • +1

They all use the one who pass on surcharge to you automatically now.. Sucks.. But only them can get away with it, not retail business though

  • +1

how does this compare to Square?

    • +49

      This one is rectangular

      • +1

Wow this is my most upvoted comment ever

Thank you everyone. My notifications said I soon an award

    • Square costs $59 up front for the basic terminal and take 1.9% of a tap or swipe transaction.

  • Isn't the new thing with iOS that anybody's iphone can now be used as a terminal and do exactly what this does?

    • +2

I responded here earlier, that function is currently US only and would only support contactless. This terminal will give you additional support for swiping, chip and includes printing receipts. Additionally time frames for expansion outside of the US for the Tap to Pay on iPhone functionality is unknown.

  • I have a business and this would really benefit. I don't think I'll be able to make 500 by July though, can I just put 500 of my own money to get the device fee waived?

    • You can, but it will be hard to explain to your accountant.

You will most likely end up paying tax on those $500.

      • Didn't think of the tax side, but i have purchased it already. I'll use the leftover credit from my own account when required!

        • +4

Even if you pay tax on the $500 income it’s still cheaper than the $299 terminal cost.
