South Australia Energy Provider - Who to Go with?

I think we should have our own page because we do pay more for electricity than anyone else in Australia. I'm with Elysian and my rates are going up 300% in 9 days time so need to find someone else. These are what I'm finding are the best rates atm. I don't have solar. Anyone want to add anything? Even though peak is higher, RED might be better with the bonuses.

UPDATE: Cashback sucks and likely won't be available to you.

  • Assume you have smart meter? We have a digital, non smart meter so the rates from AGL after July 1 are as follows:

    New rates
    Effective 1 July 2022

Electricity usage per annum Unit GST excl. GST incl.
    General Usage
    First 4000 kWhc/kWh 33.22000 36.542000
    Thereafter c/kWh 33.22000 36.542000
    Feed-in tariff c/kWh 5.00000
    Supply charge c/day 94.18000 103.598000

  • For NSW, none of the 4 deals you mentioned had fixed rates.

Feel free to choose lower variable rate for now, but also risk "no more customers" and also much higher fixed rates than current fixed rates.

Looks like the tango homeselect rates are fixed for 12 months. So to me that looks like the go.

  • Hey it's a difficult time atm most haven't announced the new rates i.e. energy local I am with elysian but they are going up from $80 a month for 250kw to $120 for 250 kw…Will follow as I am having the same issue and the energymadeeasy website doesn't really help much call up and most are like we haven't announced the new rates yet.

  • With AGL atm and still awaiting new price increase from them. Single tarrif with solar.

Will keep an eye here for updates.

  • These cashbacks are a wreck. It takes you to econnex website but only lists certain providers you can sign up to (not Tango).

I'm also with Elysian in SA. I just switched providers today after getting that steep price increase email. First one I tried was Powerclub, but they aren't taking new members.
    Went with Energy Locals:
    GST included
    0.29/kWh peak
    0.14/kWh shoulder
    0.18/kWh off peak

    0.72 daily charge
    12.99 monthly charge

Which is about 60 cents cheaper per day for me for the listed Alinta… Although I didn't get cashback. (edit)

Nothing compared to how great Elysian's prices were, but everything seems kind of crappy right now.

    • I looked at Powerclub but I'm worried about these non traditional suppliers (I was with Amber for 1 year). I know with Powerclub you have to pay extra on top of your usage as a buffer (around 10%) but because it's a wholesale structure arn't they going to have the highest price increases? I still have the Amber app so can see the wholesale prices, and unless I have this all wrong, they're going to need to have a 50% price increase to stay in profit.

      • Literally ignore everything I said lol. I just re read that you said you DIDNT go with Powerclub.

    • Thank you for sharing this. I'm also facing the same situation. Elysian is going to increase their price by too much. Will have a look at Energy Locals' plan today.

      • Careful the website does say “Our prices will change in July” and the current prices are not fixed.

        • Noted and thanks.

    • those prices are changing they've also upped the monthly amount for the 250kw to 120.

    • Just wondering how you have gone with Energy Locals? Looking at switching. Cheers!

They aren't paying my FIT (I just found out yesterday and need to call them) and they are upping their prices on the 22nd:
        For EnergyLocals:

        Old rate:
        Daily Supply Charge (c/day) 71
        Anytime/Peak - Step 1&2 (c/kWh) 37.5
        Off Peak (c/kWh) 26.5
        Shoulder (c/kWh) 23
        Membership ($/month) 14.99
        Solar - first 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 9
        Solar - after 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 6.5

        New rate:
        Daily Supply Charge (c/day) 72
        Anytime/Peak - Step 1&2 (c/kWh) 29
        Off Peak (c/kWh) 18
        Shoulder (c/kWh) 14
        Membership ($/month) 12.99
        Solar - first 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 6.5
        Solar - after 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 6.5

Firstly, thanks so much for your quick reply!

Good to know re: rates - I might get in touch with them directly to see what the rate changes would be for my area as the quote I got is completely different to either of the rates you shared.

Switched to Origin with an everyday rewards offer, 20000 points which could be targeted.

    • This is what I did too. It's about 31c peak, 80c a day supply charge (fixed for 12 months). Which is more than the 24c I was paying with reAmped, but not horrendously so. And the 30000 reward points work out to $150 (I believe it should be available to anyone, though the offer ends at the end of the month I think.)

      • I only switched electricity so only 20000 points. Didn't bother with gas thinking it wouldn't increase price as much as electricity.
On their website the Origin Go fixed price plan only offers 10000 points. I clicked the link in the Everyday reward promotion email. It is possible that they sent that email to every card holder.

      • That's cheap af, it's now 40.66c peak.

  • Energy Australia Fixed Rate Prices seem quite competitive for those on single tariff (note that their slightly cheaper variable rates are due for increase July 1), especially with solar as their feed in tariff is a little more than others.

    5% off (current) reference prices.

    No Frills:

    Electricity Rates Incl. GST
Peak usage per day 33.55 c/kWh
Electricity Supply Charge per day $0.792

    Solar Feed-in Tariffs Excl. GST
    Single rate feed-in tariff 8.5 c/kWh

    Gas:

    Gas Rates Incl. GST
    Usage per day 3.96 c/MJ
Gas Supply Charge per day $0.737

+$50 online sign up credit. "Get a $50 credit on each new energy account when you sign up online."

    https://www.energyaustralia.com.au/home/electricity-and-gas/…

    • Could be paired with this too.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/706898

Not too sure if will get the additional $50 credit from Energy Australia aswell. But if do that's a $350 cashback if sign up for electricity/gas.

Might have to consider this myself

EDIT. NVM the above. Appears cashback only available on variable tarrif plans

      • Also from that thread
"I got last deal for $270 with No Frills plan. If you read the conditions it says ‘plans’ and doesn’t say Flexi plan only. Here is my response from CR yesterday-

        “ Hi Chris,

Thanks for contacting us in relation to your EnergyAustralia signup. I am more than happy to assist with your query.

To answer your question, yes both Flexi Plan and No Frills are eligible for cashback but only for new Energy Australia customer signups.

If you are a new customer and the transaction has not tracked into your Cashrewards account would you mind sending through the Energy Plan Confirmation that you would have received via email from EnergyAustralia? An example for your reference is attached to this message.”.

The example started with reference BB and some think it must be CR."

  • TANGO no longer taking SA customers

  • I just got an email from EnergyLocals that they are putting their rates up 35-45% on the 22nd. It will take longer than that to even transfer to a new provider. They didn't pay my FIT either.
Anyone have any leads of what's great right now?

    • +1

Transferring to a new provider for electricity should only take 2 business days or thereabouts with new laws introduced last year (doesn't apply to gas).

      Edit:

From October 1, customers switching to a new power company will need to be transferred from their existing retailer within two business days of signing up.

      https://www.canstarblue.com.au/electricity/new-energy-switch…

      • My transfer took 15 days. June 11 -> June 26

        • +1

I see. Follow that up if it happens again and you are still at the old provider when the rates go up.

I transferred from Reamped to Energy Australia at the end of June and it only took 2 days (SA).

Unfortunately they don't offer their fixed rates anymore that I jumped on.

Whats the highest FIT for solar (with no limits)?

Currently with AGL on Solar Saver (inc GST)
    Peak 42.26c/kWh
    Shoulder 23.70c/kWh
    Off Peak 27.478c/kWh
    FIT 12 c/kWh
    Supply Charge 103.60c/day

    • For EnergyLocals:

      Old rate:
      Daily Supply Charge (c/day) 71
      Anytime/Peak - Step 1&2 (c/kWh) 37.5
      Off Peak (c/kWh) 26.5
      Shoulder (c/kWh) 23
      Membership ($/month) 14.99
      Solar - first 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 9
      Solar - after 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 6.5

      New rate:
      Daily Supply Charge (c/day) 72
      Anytime/Peak - Step 1&2 (c/kWh) 29
      Off Peak (c/kWh) 18
      Shoulder (c/kWh) 14
      Membership ($/month) 12.99
      Solar - first 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 6.5
      Solar - after 10 kW/day (c/kWh)* 6.5

    • Do you have an issue ever when swapping electricity providers and not getting your FIT?

When I switched from AGL to Elysian, they wouldn't pay for my excess solar being fed back into the grid because I didn't "have the right meter", took them around 9 months to get someone to come out to swap it for the same model of meter.

I guess the reason was because the meter was owned by another meter servicing company and Elysian goes through Spotless.

I just noticed on my bill with EnergyLocals that I'm not getting a FIT, although it would only be like $10-15 a month based on my excess solar the past few months.

      • +1

I've only switched once, and that was before I got solar. Sorry.

Summers coming soon, I assume you will generate more than $10-15 worth, get it sorted out before then. Good luck!
