    Brodened smh

  • +16

That's not actually a bad price for a luxury SUV right?

Like a GLC is like 85k…

    • +1

I might be too old school but I prefer the stylings of the GLC 😂

As far as EV pricing goes for that level of performance though is great!

      • Really 6.9s to 100. Groan. Performance has actually gotten progressively worse with the new battery chemistry used out of China. And prices are basically the highest they’ve been. Think I’ll wait a year and assess then.

    • +17

      Tesla's are "luxury".

They make incredible first impressions but the interiors are extremely cheap and start falling to pieces in less than a year.

If you can afford this you'd be better off with a Polestar or BMW.

      • +6

"falling to pieces" - link please?

        • +11

Wtf is a "brand snob" I drive a Hyundai lmao

        • -1

I'm the opposite of a Euro car fan, but since when is the way to check for quality to push firmly on random interior panels? Not exactly in the design requirement for an aesthetic panel not to make noise when a random force is applied (unless it's something that's intended to be touched).

It should look good, fit well, be durable, and be quiet while driving among other things.

        • +7

You say brand snob like it's an insult. Every make has its cheap poorly built models, it's just Tesla that has a full line up full of Chinese built vehicle charging German prices and an army of fan boys defending them.

Tesla are the best at EV drive trains and charging infrastructure. Their build quality, interiors and customer support is some of the worst on the market.

But I'm an ozbargainer so I only buy cars that are 7 years old and sell them when they start to become unreliable at 15+.

      • +9

Cannot confirm. Have had a Tesla for 6 years, interior not in pieces.

        • +7

Me too. My year-old Model 3 has no issues.

      • +5

The first link was in 2020 when Teslas were made in USA. According to a friend that has one the quality issues were fixed when production was moved to China. I’m not a huge Tesla fan. I still think the initial outlay is expensive and I have been told by some people who analysed the cost of buying a petrol vs electric car due to the bigger upfront cost of the car the savings are not huge, especially if you’re in the habit of turning over your car every three years or shorter. I’m not an expert and am driving a 25+ year old Suby that still does the job getting around country and city.

      • +1

well, small sample size but my model 3 LR is 3 years old and has 90,000 km's and the interior is absolutely faultless.

    • +3

Yep. Much lower running costs too.

      Lower depreciation is likely too.

Having much better safety and features and acceleration and all that is just a bonus.

    • When it first came out, paid ~$80k 250. Now its around $100k for glc 200. Nuts..

    • -4

It’s not luxury however most buyers of Audis, Mercs and BMWs don’t care about the quality interior materials, paint and panel assembly. All they care about is the badge.

The Tesla badge is the hottest you can get right now. Expect to see one of these on every street corner by next year.

      • +1

Um i think you might find people who buy Mercs and BMW's buy them because of their build quality, reliabilty, great performance engineering.

I don't own the car - I've got a BMW motorcycle and its basically bullet proof, easy to fix and hasn't missed a beat in 10 years.

I ordered a Volvo XC40 Pure Electric, not as cool looking but great build quality and comes in dual motor for the same price as the Model Y.

        Just my $0.02 worth.

        • Depends on the vehicle. Do you think most GLC200 buyers are really buying it for any reason other than the image?

The XC40 Electric looks like brilliant car. Hope you enjoy it.

          • +1

            @tp0:

Do you think most GLC200 buyers are really buying it for any reason other than the image?

Do you think you know what everyone else is thinking? You must be really good at poker…

          • @tp0: Gotta love people pretending to know why other people are buying certain cars.
How do you know they are only buying it for the image? They might like the brand's design, features, quality etc and they simply don't need a car with powerful engine and hence just opt to buy GLC200?

        • Turns out we are all right - half of the market is conscientious buyers and the other half are jerks!…well according to this poll anyways..

How is Tesla Y a luxury SUV? It looks cheap, with cheap quality

      • +2

        No it doesn't.

        • -3

          No it doesn't.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but personally I think the Tesla 'egg car' style is dated. It looked great when it came out but the world has shifted away from curvy to boxy shapes and Telsa is being left behind.
Also the interiors are bland and cheap looking. Compare any of the Germans and it is night and day difference.

          • +1

@1st-Amendment: Not true, look at all mercedes new designs do you see boxy or curvy?

            • @xtommyk:

Not true, look at all mercedes new designs do you see boxy or curvy?

A Merc GLE is very boxy compared to Tesla X. Much, much nicer inside and out.

              • @1st-Amendment: Id argue that the GLE is very bulbous comparatively to its closest rival the X6 which is a lot more angular.

                • @xtommyk:

Sure, but both are a lot more modern looking than Tesla's designs which are all based on the 10 year old S.

                  • @1st-Amendment: Curious to hear your thoughts on Porsche design then

                    • @xtommyk:

Curious to hear your thoughts on Porsche design then

Porsche, like the old VW Beetle have the benefit that they've stuck to their same style for 70 years so have established a certain timeless look which they can get away with. Another example is the Luis Vuitton brown handbag. Ugly as hell, but the branding and decades of reputation outweighs the look.

To me Tesla looks like something between a 1997 Hyundai Excel and a 2015 Mazda 3 on the outside, and a plastic lunchbox on the inside. You can like the technology, but let's not pretend that the styling is still modern in 2022.

    • +12

There's nothing luxurious about a Model Y. The interior uses cheap materials and is very spartan. Not what you'd expect from a car at that price range. Worse, they don't even give you the option to upgrade to a more appealing fitout.

So it's plastic seats and no dashboard for you - even if you spend more than $100k on the performance version.

      • +2

Depends on what you deem "luxury" if lots of knobs and dials, and more chrome, then yes the Mercedes is "more luxurious". My definition of luxury is not that. I don't really get what you mean by "plastic seats", Tesla have great seats. And "no dashboard"? Just look 12 inches to the left = best infotainment package in the business (yes better than Merc MBUX, IMHO)

    • Since when is a GLC 85k in 2017?

    • except it's not a luxury SUV.

    • This. People keep comparing a Tesla to a $25k econobox, and that is not the cros-shop. My parents have a Mercedes GLE 350d, which in isolation is a nice vehicle, but at +$100k there is no way I would swap my Tesla M3P. Its not even close.
