There's an interesting history behind Nant:

That's a very long time ago, now. They were taken over by AWH (Bill Lark and co.) and do make some yummy whisky. Bought a bottle of their Portwood back in 2018. Loved it.

From someone who only just heard of this through the above link, Thanks for clearing that up :)
I haven't tried Nant but it's been on my list!

You're most welcome! I've pulled the trigger on that bottle. Worth it, any day of the week.

@Buckshot: don't tempt me - I've bought more whisky than I should have already this week..

            • @ArtVanderlay: I have whisky purchase amnesia. Bottles keep showing up at my door and I don't know why :P

          • +1

@Buckshot: btw - did u go bourbon or sherry??

      • +2

Definitely not saying people should or shouldn't buy it or whether this in anyway impacted the whisky quality, just quite an interesting history to know about the brand.

        • +1

definitely not criticising you - found it interesting as I had not heard about it before. cheers!

I picked up a bottle of this for $90 and still didn't feel like it was money well spent. YMMV.

    • Especially considering its a 500ml bottle.

    • +1

I really rate it. But yeah for the price go a little higher and get yourself a bigger bottle of something like the Aberlour A'bunadh

      • Is it A'bundadh of joy?

        • Islay think you need Oban.

          • @tebja1: My mate wanted to get involved in this thread. I said Glenlivet alone mate.

I never understood paying so much for new age whisky. When you can get incredible aged stuff for less.

    • +2

Aged stuff is a moot point with Australian whisky. It ages faster due to wider climate variances in the seasons. Age doesn't necessarily = better, unless it's Scotch or from an area where the climate stays in a similar range the entire year.

      • +1

New age you always get a smash of alcohol/harsh flavours up front, no matter what. If that's your cup of tea then it works out great. Otherwise aged whiskeys greatly reduce this while laying open to more complex flavours.

        • +1

I don't think you can make blanket assumptions about new age being like that. It will all depend on the angel's share and how much it is cut down with water..Cask strength is a different story.

4-year-old Aussie stuff doesn't necessarily have the burn.

          • @Buckshot: It is a fair blanket statement, as it's the extreme minority that do not have the burn.

Which new age Aussie stuff have you tried that do not have the burn? I've tried Lark, Lineburners, Starward, Nant, Hellyers Road, Sullivans Cove. My favourite has been the Lark 20yo.

            • @onlinepred: Iniquity out of Tinshed Distilling, I've also had Lark, Limeburners, Nant, Starward, Hellyers Road, SC, Corowa, Black Gate, Old Kempton/Redlands, Bakery Hill, Timboon, Whippersnapper, Morris and Tasmanian Independent Bottlers. There are more but I can't for the life of me remember.

Old Kempton, TIB, Iniquity, Nant, Lark and Limeburners, off top of my head have all had releases that weren't harsh, especially in their wine cask/fortified releases.

              • @Buckshot: Yea okay, I guess it depends on tastes… I just don't like the upfront hit, nant, lark, limeburners new age all had it for me. Got a bottle of Corowa that I don’t even want to finish.

                • @onlinepred: I'm a fan of the Nant range but I'll agree you get a harsh burn up front although I personally enjoy the flavour, mouthfeel and aftertaste that follow that the burn isn't an issue for me and this has been throughout all of the range I've tried so far.

This is a great price for fraud whisky

    • You do realise that was in 2016-2017, right?
They're owned by AWH now, and still, do good whisky.

      • Was a joke. No need to be precious. Though I'm sure if you were a barrel investor back then you'd be singing a different tune. It's decent whisky but way overpriced. I deem the use of 500ml bottles to be fraudulent anyway

        • Not being precious. They're under different ownership now and the folks there work hard to do good whisky. Your comment - even has a joke isn't fair on them.

Small chance this will be worth something in a decade when Nant has completely been erased and the Netflix doco comes out
