  • Oof, been trying to decide between this or the duet 5…

    • This is probably the slowest Chrome OS device still in support? So don’t get your expectation high. If just for YouTube video and emails, then this is good enough. Otherwise, get a better Chromebook like Duet 5.

      • Hmm the duet 5 is also 4gb ram. Wanted to run kodi on it

        • Ram is the least problem. For CB Duet, the SoC is the bottleneck.

        • Do you mean just the android app? In general, if you just want Android apps, these aren't the best experience - just get a decent Android tablet. I will disagree with the other comment in that the OG Duet definitely suffers from having only 4GB ram if you do much multitasking and any use of Linux. It's not terrible but there is some lag as memory pressure increases. Android app performance would be better with a faster CPU and that is where it shows the most, but for my use case (Linux container always running) the memory is equally limiting. So, it depends on your use case. If I were to buy a device that wasn't priced like the OG Duet, it would 100% be an 8GB device. Luckily, the Duet 5/3 have 8GB options.

Since I love the Duet for my use case (sold a Tab S7+ in favour of the Duet because ChromeOS better suits my use case despite the performance downgrade) I swore I would buy the next version, but really, at the $260 I paid, I don't have enough faults with the performance to upgrade. I do want a slightly larger screen for writing on documents, but really, nothing is bothering me enough to upgrade. I don't use it as a full laptop replacement, mostly inking + watching lectures + web apps + some Linux stuff. Anything more serious I have a laptop for, but most days I only carry the Duet as it does the job and never needs a charge during the day.

That said, if you're certain that a Duet device is the device for you, then I would just get the Duet 5 if you like that form factor and screen (i.e. okay with lower pixel density than this Duet) so that you're not as performance limited. Especially if the OG is only on sale at $300, which is lukewarm. Or, wait for the Duet 3 to come down in price, but that will probably be some time. This deal at $560 for the Duet 5 8GB w/ stylus would be pretty good if it happened again.

      • Agree with this. It's very slow, much slower than I expected. I ended up selling it

I had this then upgraded to the duet 5. The experience on the duet 5 is much better - it's difficult to use the duet in your laptop as the smaller size means the width is too short for propping on your legs when in transit or don't have a desk nearby - the duet 5 is wider so can do this much better. Trackpad is bigger as well - just an overall much better improved experience. Kind of feels like the difference in typing speed when you go from a phone to a proper laptop. The duet just feels too cramped.

Performance is a huge upgrade on the duet 5, no slowdown experienced yet.

The screen is obviously much much nicer to look at (though PPI/sharpness suffers a bit).

The obvious benefit is size of the original duet and cheaper price.

  • My experience not great, quite slow if you install any of the android apps

  • It's worth noting that this device will receive updates until June 2028, if you're not bothered by the smaller screen at this price it beats out all other budget chromebooks.

  • I have this one. It is starting to get too slow for my needs.

  • Typing this comment on this Chromebook. Yes it is slow but fast enough for me, coming from the even slower Asus Chromebook Flip C100 as my "travel laptop". I don't really use Android apps but this runs the Linux container well which suits my needs.

  • Have this and it did get frustratingly slow.
However a factory reset seems to have sped it up quite a lot so it's back to being usable again :)

  • Hi would this be great just for video calls for my parents to use?

  • Thanks OP. Ordered from officeworks for $297.
