I spotted this one on the grocery run this morning. I filled up the tank afterwards and knocked off $10 from the fuel price. Nice deal but it ends today.
20c off Fuel with Coles When You Buy 4 Litres of Moro Oil

Pity it wasnt motor oil instead of Moro oil, could of used for oil change……
lol!
You'll have to keep checking places like supercheap auto if they ever end up doing their 20% off deal again.I think motor oil would probably taste better than Moro olive oil, it's pretty bland IME! ;)
But you just paid the extra $10 on the oil. Coles give with one hand and take with the other.
That's one way of looking at it…
…another is, I use plenty of olive oil and buying in bulk saves me more than buying individual bottles of the stuff.
The deal is really only good if you are a regular buyer/user of the oil. Going out to buy it specifically for the discount isn't going to make it a good deal for you.
They usually do 2 for 1 on olive oil. So you actually paid an extra $20 to get $10 back. This is an anti-bargain.
have you ever seen 2 for $20 on this brand ?
Thats the cheapest it goes imo - 2 for 40
Yeah it's not really a bargain at all…
Example 50Lt fuel tank:
Fuel price: $1.50Lt
Normal price: $75 / 50Lt
20c discount: ($1.3 x 50Lt) + $23 (cost of oil) = $88Infact the break even point for this deal (meaning cost of product + discount = average cost of product) is 115Lt of petrol.
Normal: $1.50 x 115Lt = $172.5
Discount: $1.30 x 115Lt + $23 = $172.5I suppose the only advantage is you get oil, but it doesn't warrant the average buyer spending $23 on oil.
its all about the petrol discount AND the oil. Blimey, even my partner, who finds it hard to "bargain" came back 20 minutes ago from the shop and said look what I got. We normally buy it, needed it, and came away with a $5 saving over what we would normally pay on a half price special!
But if you take into account the fact that (some) people have to drive further to get this deal (closest petrol station may not be a coles branded)… there goes some of the deal.
In principal i refuse to fill up at any woolies or coles station for the simple fact that they're killing off competition and therefore will be in control of the price.
all good, each to there own…..nobody makes anybody buy anything, and of course this consideration of driving further applies to any bargains that are to be had. I will take my 20c, as all boxes are ticked for me :)
Yeah dude, you're right. For some people, this bargain isn't so great. Well done. Do you want a medal?
It's clearly a good deal for anyone who was going to buy oil anyway, and people who don't want the oil or don't go to coles branded petrol stations were never going to buy this anyway.
Sounds to me like you and the other couple of guys whining about this deal just like complaining. I for one appreciate the original post and consider it great value.
The medal… depends: Are you handing them out… if so, no thanks.
I'm not saying i don't appreciate the post…
What i am saying is that - in general - people are not looking far enough into the future. An Australia dominated in petrol by the two giants will see no more bargains. Or maybe just bargains that are just artificial. Kinda like this one.
Sure, if you need the oil and you need the petrol…
I think you're fighting a losing battle, mbroere.
People are happy buying from Coles and Woolworths and thus killing the competition because it results in short term gains (a price discount). Little do they think forward to what prices will be like with just two companies operating (higher prices in the future).
The same theory applies to the purchase of Coles and Woolworths branded products. They'll cheap now but what will happen when the competitors go out of business?
I don't disagree with you there… but should i give up already, resign to the fact that woolies and coles will screw us all over in the future, even more so than now? No.
My petrol i get at my local independent. I know he won't be able to give me 20c off if i buy liters of olive oil. But I am fine with this. It's a principle thing.
my tank is 180 litres…..
the ba$7@rds only honour up to 150l, but thats still $30 off
i would normally have a 4c voucher, giving ,me $6 offso essentially i get a 4l oil for free and $4 back to me.
sweet
180 litre tank, no wonder you have to visit here.. :)
I don't see why they are
ba$7@rds
when it pretty clearly states right there on the docket that its only valid for the first 150l.
just coz somethings in the fine print, doesn't mean you cant complain or make a comment about it. freedom of speech
this isn't an example of 'freedom of speech'. it's just an opinion on a product.
it would only be 'freedom of speech' if you would usually get oppressed for that view.
150 lt * $0.2 =$30
single 4lt purchase would be $23
total saving $7, if the fule price at coles express are same with the caltex safeway/woolworth
this would work great in your case.. how about return the oil after you've filled up your car HAHAHAHA ;)
i have seen at harris farms they also selling olive oil 4lt for $9.99 (not moro brand), for me taste both of them are the same and both of them no cholesterol. so i have to purchase more than 50 lt petrol for worthwhile and no guarantee coles express petrol cheaper than woolies petrol, most of them i got 5-8 cents higher around my place
Choice Oil Review:
http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/food-and-health/f…For those that are too lazy to click on this, it says that Moro is "tired and unbalanced".
Guys you need to compare apples with apples. You can't say it isn't a bargain when you aren't comparing the exact same product.
Moro olive oil, and get 20 cent fuel discount. Bargain if that's the oil you normally buy, Coles is where you normally shop, shelll if that's where you normally buy fuel.
Not a bargain if you normally buy a cheaper and different brand of oil, don't shop at Coles and don't buy fuel from shell. Simple.
Y question is for the deal buying 2x 4 litre cans for $40, do I get 2x 20 cent fuel vouchers. The discount tag does say offer for any 4 litre oil varieties purchased.Olive oil should not be cooked with. The heating process makes olive oil one of the most unhealthy. All the health claims about olive oil are only valid if you do not convert it with heat.
I've never heard that before. Can you link to an article about this?
I'd heard of it but not looked into it
Is this referring to "smoke point" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_point
which for olive oil is 190C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive_oil
?I fry on a low fire and have a temperature reader near me. But a high fire, usually goes over 190 C quite easily … note I am not an expert :S
This is Ozbargain, so I don't think what I have to say will be too popular.
I used to work until a few months ago for a company that sells Australian made olive oil as well as imported olive oil. The whole olive industry in Australia is under serious threat due to low cost imports. The top 3 olive oil producers in the world are Spain, Italy and Greece. Knowing what is happening with them in the GFC, they have started exporting oil at costs far below what it costs to manufacture, and are providing good margins to Woolies and Coles. So, in the short term, everyone gets a good bargain, but in the longer term, Australian olive groves are just closing down at a serious rate. Given that it takes decades to build up a grove, if we ever want to reenter the market, it will be too late.
Also, most don't realise that there is a quality difference between local and imported. See one such study here (US based study)… http://olivecenter.ucdavis.edu/publications/olive%20oil%20fi…
Thanks for that stralya :S
Logical and sensible argument supported by real facts. Thats enough to convince me. You're right I didn't realise there was much of a difference. So what are the quality Australian brands we should be buying?
While Australian virgin olive oils are generally better than the imported product (mainly due to freshness), there are a lot of dodgy Australian products out there marketed as extra virgin but are refined product (including home brands). OzOlio is one example of a premium aussie product marketed as extra virgin olive oil but has been found to use incorrect use by dates and not extra virgin.
For the record I recommend you look for product from members of the Australian Olive Oil association with the date of production on the bottle like Cobram Estate.
Won't neg the deal as its offering a genuine fuel saving for the purchase of a product. But really, why would you bother?
Would recommend Cobram Estate or Red island. But other brands are good as well. Olive Grove is a good brand, but Coles and Woolies don't range it any more I think.
Yes Cobram & Red Island for the win. In my opinion they are the best in the nexus of price, quality and availability. You can certainly find better quality AU olive oils, but they will generally be quite a bit more expensive, and harder to find.
Do agree with u stralya. For the quality, I normally buy extra virgin australian virin oil from Aldi or Woolies.
They also sell cheap imported brands. Are the Spanish, Italians and Greeks selling olive oil far below what it costs them to manufacture it, or what it costs the local Australian farmer? That's a key question.
I work in the IT industry in Australia and sometimes hear opinions from corporation heads that I should 'toughen up' and compete with works in China and India earning one fifth of my wage.
I would expect it is being sold just over cost to avoid being fined for dumping. However, Europe has a complex system of subsidies that allows them to understate their costs. More on the story here…
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/national/olive-oil-import…
I wish there were more people like you, stralya.
Unfortunately, people don't think about these issues until they are affected.
People are happy buying Coles and Woolworths branded imported products and thus killing the competition because it results in short term gains (a price discount). Little do they think forward to what prices will be like with just two companies operating (higher prices in the future).
Does the fuel discount voucher still valid for a month from today?
yes
FYI, Lakeside Joondalup WA only offer 2 for $40 but not 20c/L.
Got the last two in The Glen. No $20c fuel discount advertised, but still got it at check out.
Just curious, what do people use all that oil for??? In 19 years (since I moved out of home) I've only used 3 or 4 bottles of oil (between 500ml & 1L each).
possibilities…
1. deep fry
2. lubrication
3. "They did this on masterchef so i should do it…"
4. ice-skating at home without ice…

1000. Making a new E10 formula.:D Deep fry was all I could think of, 2,3,4 all made me LOL. Awesome response, thanks for the laugh! (Good luck with #1000 should you try! :P )
stir fry, pour into the salad, marinade, if you never cooked, then you don't use much oil
I cook (don't know why you'd assume I don't), but I dislike oily food. I mostly use non-stick cookware, so I only need to use a small amount.
dislike too oily foods as well… dont understand why tv chefs go mad with oil in salads or make some dishes shine like polished shoes…
@ joannatan, cooking can involved steaming, boiling and the best… MICROWAVING. So oil does not always need to be used. Personally if i use oil i use AlfaOne Rice Bran Oil.
i think we have different palate, steam boiling seems no taste to me.
microwave, i have to use as little as possible, just try to reduce the radiationI love flavour (junk food too!) as much as the next person, but there's something about oily that just icks me. Can't eat Dominos pizza anymore since they started using garlic oil instead of garlic. :( Yuck! When I do stir frys I use maybe a 10-20c piece sized puddle in the non-stick wok (sesame oil is nice). And as for oil on salad… I blame masterchef. All tastes are different, but I personally don't get the crisp salad with oil thing.
also keep in mind that some people here do cook different types of food. mediterranean cooking often invovles a lot of olive oil…
i think we have different palate, steam boiling seems no taste to me.
It's a trade off, oil vs cholesterol. Tasty food vs your health.
microwave, i have to use as little as possible, just try to reduce the radiation
As long as you don't stand near the microwave while it is on (inverse cube law) and it doesn't have dodgy old seals, you aren't going to get radiated. It doesn't make your food radioactive.
@Domingo
It;s not always a trade off. Steamed Canto-fare heavily relys on herbs, fat from the meat and seasoning [not oil] to provide complex flavours.
and i fully agree with your microwave answer. Funny how people think the wrong things [chainmail] http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pag…
Mums would love this, we always need an additional big can so this is perfect !
