This is a PCIe gen 4 ssd. Would be worth putting that in description.

  • Have this drive on my ps5 with a heatsink from that I got ebay separately.
    Great drive, highly recommend

  • Thanks OP. My son has this in his PS5 and its outstanding. I've just got another to add to the desktop, great find !

  • Great find OP, cheers. Looks like it has at least 3x higher TBW rating than 980 Pro but sacrifices a bit of speed. For the price really can't go wrong.

  • Thanks OP! Any recommendations for heatsink that fits PS5 usage, anyone?

JEYI used to be a popular choice, but price has gone up. Check other sellers, I just picked the first one from AliExpress search.

There is also this one but obviously you don't get the actual LED RGB module. You cannot use the RGB module with PS5 anyway. I included it here because it is cheap.

Generally, you can just get the cheapest one. The heatsink requirement is more just to make us feel better. Testing has shown it made virtually no difference. Thermal throttling generally happens during heavy writes. Thing is, how often do you really transfer heaps of data from internal SSD to this NVMe SSD?

If you want a branded one: be quiet MC1. Postage cost is too high though.

Honestly, for most of us, these ones (including MC1) come with a generic heat spreader, which isn't the most ideal way to cool the SSD. Do you really have temperature probes to test the SSD with heatsink? None of them will beat SSDs with heatsinks from manufacturers.

If this SSD is single sided, you can pretty much get any heatsink you want. Double sided SSDs, I prefer a heatsink with screws.

      • Thanks for the thorough reply! So technically using the SSD without heatsink won’t do much harm anyway in this use case?

        • It won't, but officially, no one has the guts to recommend that (since Sony recommends it). So, "officially", my recommendation is get a heat sink 😃.

Anyway, make sure you really don't intend to put a heatsink in because I find removing the cover on PS5 a bit tricky (especially if you don't want to scratch the plastic inside). I suggest just get a cheap one to stop you from keep on thinking about it. If you actually looked at SSDs with manufacturer heatsinks, you will notice the heat spreaders are at specific locations, rather than one big pad. All the ones I mentioned above are just one big pad (or two, for double sided SSDs).

          • @netsurfer: Good point. Will just order cheap one from local shop and be done with it. Thanks for your help mate..

        • Better to go over board and be safe, then roll a dice and kill your ps5.

  • Seems to have expired now :(

PS5 calls for 7000gig/s drives. It’s obvious these slower ones are working fine today. But future games may require faster so be cautious long term. Can always move more demanding games into internal storage if needed tho.
