Should have hoarded before fuel prices got smashed again

    • +1

Especially now even plastic bags are 15c…

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/05/12/gas-sho…

      • Not for long… Woolies is phasing them out.

        • -2

Do we get paper bags for free or do we have to pay for those too?

          • +6

@ATangk: 20c for paper. You can get the fruit bags for free ;)

            • -2

@Sheng: Nah I refuse to change to paper and pay more

    • -2

Still running on pre Putin priced fuel here.

  • +1

Better than the Bunnings ones in my opinion. I have both kinds but these have a little more space so they pour much easier. Room for a bung if you can be bothered

  • +4

I got two from a previous deal but feel like it stinks my garage out during storage (even with lid on tight). Plus the containers contracts after a week. Nor sire if that's normal or if it's venting somehow.

    • Yeah, I have nothing good to say about these plastic ones. SCA sells an excellent metal one that's a no-regret buy IMHO. Wait for it to come on special and grab one.

    • Plus the containers contracts after a week. Nor sire if that's normal or if it's venting somehow.

Shrinking is normal when the weather gets colder than when you first closed the cap. If the weather gets hotter it'll expand.
It's safe as long as you don't fill it past the max line.

    • yes it's normal for a plastic container. Get a metal one and all your issues will be gone.

  • +2

Costs twice as much to fill with petrol as the container itself!!

    • +4

      fill it with water

      • Or leave it full of atmosphere.

    • You are meant to work the streets with these and barter for petrol with services.

  • How long can you store fuel in these jerry cans?

    • +1

Modern fuel doesn't seem to store too well, I try to use it within 3 months…

      • +1

But you can buy additives to prolong the life

    • +2

Probably depends on what you're going to use it for. They'll tell you a few months - but I've used 10yo fuel in my mower with no issues at all.
I wouldn't store fuel to use in a car long term - theres a chance of it getting contaminated & you'll get stuck somwhere on a cold winter night.

    • +2

BP say you can do 6 months storage in a sealed container at 20 degrees (3 months at 30 degrees). Diesel you can store for longer

      https://www.bp.com/content/dam/bp/country-sites/en_au/austra…

      • Thank you. That is probably the first explanation ever that wasn't based on old wives' tales. lol

        • My "3 month max" observation is based on how my motorbikes, fire-pumps, & chainsaws start and run on old fuel…(my old 90's carb Hiace & Triton aren't too fussy)… You can smell the difference between fresh fuel and 3 month old fuel, IMO that says it all…

          YMMV :)

    • +1

If you are prepping, cycle petrol in 6 months, diesel lasts longer, cycle in about a year. I store my petrol as 98, figure it might last better? Also if there are fuel shortages, a jerry of 98 will give more miles than a jerry of 91.

  • Buy one now (5th- 6th) and fill it up immediately as prices in Melbourne are going to increase about 35c pl within a few days.
That'll knock the price down to a net $13.00 - a bargain to then be able to use the container for the next petrol price cycle increase. A couple more price cycles and it has paid for itself.

    • +1

      Or hire a chopper

  • Is there much of a benefit to getting a metal one over plastic?

  • +3

I have 5 of these in my garage , best way to save $ , i use at least 100L petrol per week.
Do it with 7-11 fuel lock and Ifakelocation

    • +1

Is it time to buy a tanker trailer?

    • shhhhhhhh

  • Are jerry cans any big sealed jug for carrying fuel? I thought it was the ones with handles like this one.

    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/pro-quip-pro-quip-metal-…

I guess it's whatever the store tells me it is.

    • +2

      Historically, yes.
Originally invented by the Germans in ww2 and copied by the Americans I believe.
      Hence the term 'Jerry' can

      • A bit surprised though that term has still stuck. Wonder if Krautcan would have made it more obvious. Bit like making rice in a Nipcooker

  • +1

So, these for petrol, the 1001 deals on powerbanks for electricity. Just need a deal on natural gas

    • +8

      baked beans

  • I’d only use this in situations of fuel scarcity. Its not worth it for me to wait 5-10 min to empty out all the fuel

    • Is there a faster way to fill up a lawn mower?

      • +1

Yes, if you go to a Formula 1 pit stop

      • Got me there

      • buy an electric one

  • +1

I bought one of these back in 2020 when petrol was 80 cents. It paid for itself after a few weeks of me filling the jerry can at the bottom of the price cycle then emptying it into the car at the top of the cycle ($1?)

    Good times

  • +3

If Bunnings is closer you can get this instead.

    • The stout Sceptre ones were the best by far they don't fall over in the boot and no vapour leak. But looks like they all now have a vent.

      • Agreed!

I have 2 of the 25L Sceptre ones from repco. (wait for their 30% off sales!) they don't leak, the filler portion is stored inside the container with a nice rubber seal which prevents leaking when transporting and filling.

I've never tried any metal ones.

  • +1

I have been using this for a while. Yes, it is the cheapest but it is for a reason.
Their pouring hose terrible, unlike expensive ones you can pour easy.
The hose connection point also small in some service diesel pumps may not fit.
You can save money and also time sometimes you may have no time to wait in service station but fill up later at home

  • So I guess people will buy this and store Petrol before September ends when Excise comes back from gov….

  • Been $20 before. So it is a 1c savings.
Out today on Project Farm youtube channel: Possible safety devices coming to Australia. Flame mitigation insert will treble the cost of fuel containers!

  • Just need 20L of $1 below market price fuel lock to break even

  • +1

Make sure to leave standing up and not in car as it well definitely reek anyplace with fuel smell unless using metal ones with strong sealant.

  • +2

I have 2 x 5L red plastic - can confirm the smell is very annoying.

  • As I have a company fuel card, I usually keep a 10L Jerry handy for Mrs Cool's sleigh. I think 20L might be pushing it..

  • Err how is this a bargain? I'm pretty sure I paid this much from walking into the store last year.
