  • Cool, a $3,000 laptop would be $2,100, the same price as a $2,625 machine. $3,000 here I come.

    • … Or you could just spend half the amount and get double the laptop somewhere else.

      • Such as ?

We've had two Lenovo Edge laptops now… Our first and last.
The e520 has design flaws with the motherboard that lead to complete failures. Lenovo will repair them under warranty, but the same faults have been observed to recur by many and the Lenovo extended warranty is massively overpriced.

They were good machines back when IBM engineered them (I work in IT and my clients have hundreds of the things), but those days are well behind us. The current business grade Thinkpads aren't too bad, but the Edge series aren't great.

        • My E520 was also died due to motherboard issue. Swapped it with an ideaPad Y series, and happy with the decision made :)

Stay away from Edge series. I personally think Edge's quality is worse than Acer.

      • And would it be the same quality?

        Side note:

All three of my Dell notebooks died, and one even managed to this a few times because it happen within the warranty period, and to Dell's credit they do keep fixing their stuff. However, that's not good enough for me. I want a notebook that will last till I say, yep, sorry buddy it's time to go to the notebook "gods".

I'm not on my second Lenovo notebook; bring me to nearly 4 and a bit years usage in total. The first one is still going strong. I plan on upgrading soon, once the T5 series has the new ivy bridge setup. I really can't fault the Lenovo stuff, I mean my main notebook runs all day. In my opinion they are simply awesome! Although, I have herd bad stories regarding their cheap s#$t, but you get what you pay for.

It's a bit hard to blame OzBargainers who want cheap stuff, but I think people need to realise that laptops are not just about CPU, memory and hard drives. I've also been using Dell laptops from 2001 to 2011 (Inspirons, and then exclusively Latitudes). I've been buying Lenovo's for the last 14 months and have to say that I'm very happy with the quality.

Yup ThinkPad EDGE has its problems. It's the consumer grade ThinkPad without magnesium frame and all other goodies. I have however bought 2 ThinkPad EDGE (E320 and E420) and have helped friends to purchase various EDGE models. I have to say that they are pretty good for the price.

I myself use a T410 though, and after July when the instant write-off threshold increased to $6500 I'll be buying more T and X series. They are a lot better, and cheaper than Dell Latitudes that are in the same class.

        • scotty,

What is the instant write off threshold of $6,500?

        • +1

@surm — I buy laptops for my small business. I also happen to have to do accounting. Before July this year, all office equipments more than $1,000 cannot be instantly write-off as expense — they need to be depreciated, which gives me headache (damn I am a programmer not an accountant!) Therefore I've been getting ThinkPad EDGE as they are mostly under $1,000.

However with the recently released budget, the threshold will be lifted to $6,500 after July. So I can buy a T420 or a X220, claim the whole cost as expense for that financial year without doing the depreciation.

          See http://www.futuretax.gov.au/content/Content.aspx?doc=FactShe…

        • Programmer here too. @scotty depreciation causes me to call my accountant friend and offer beer in exchange for services. Since switching to Xero for accounting, depreciation has been a little easier, still though, head ache remains and therefore beer exchange too!

        • Thanks Scotty for the detailed answer.

    • but your leaving $3000, for metal box…

  • Yawn, wait for Ivy Bridge and buy from USA for at least 50% less.

    • Yawn, want to back that up?

    • buy from USA for at least 50% less.

For T/X2xx/W series yes US is cheaper but probably not at least 50% less. EDGE and L series (more on the budget end) the price is comparable. You also don't need to worry about shipping and can claim GST back for business use.

US does have many models that we don't have access to here though. For example the IdeaPad U300 ultrabooks.

    • So a quick check of the US site shows that with a coupon the cost can be very attractive. However, the normal road block of, see below, applies.

Can I have my purchase shipped overseas?
Lenovo is unable to ship orders internationally from the US due to export restrictions and policies. However, orders can be made from the Lenovo.com site for your destination country.

Has anyone used a freight forwarding company in the US, one which they have enough trust to forward their notebook?

      • +1

use priceusa or shipito. I have used them both before to purchase things from the US. Easy as a piece of cake. If the price is slightly more than $1000 they can import that for you as second hand so it is still under $1000.

        • +1

I've used shipito a few times and they have been great.

I have a T400 and it is the best laptop i've ever owned, better than the dell, acer and Toshiba laptops i have had in the past.

The build quality is worth the price.

  • The X220 @ ~$1150 has me tempted….
i7, with IPS screen, 9-cell battery

How much faster will ivy bridge be? and how far off is it?

    • i would be wary buying 1st gen Ivy bridge since you never know what could go wrong with them

    • Wow horrible resolution on that IPS though :S

      • It's not too bad on a 12.5". Hate the 15" ones with the same res :P

        • -1

Oops that's what I was looking at.
Yeah the 15" with that res is retarded.

    I have used 2 ThinkPads, a T420 and an Edge E520.

Good: T420 is an excellent laptop, fast, reliable, robust. Still using it as my primary laptop with iMac.

Bad: E520 is a very low quality machine. Although it carries ThinkPad brand, but it has worse build quality even compared to Lenovo's ideaPad series. I will never buy an Edge again. My Edge went back to service center twice within the first 5 months, and its motherboard was completely dead. When they offered me a brand new E520 replacement, I requested for a high-end ideaPad Y series instead. The Y series is much better than Edge.

Stay away from ThinkPad E and L series …

    • I think E series are just Lenovo crap that has a ThinkPad name. I have used T series for more than 5 years and am happy with the quality. It never let me down.

  • +2

If you're after an X220 (this may be the same for some others as well), be aware that in the last week or two Lenovo have seriously increased the price of some common upgrades, eg
    Windows 7 Pro upgrade - was ~$149, now ~$199
Premium HD display - was ~$100-110, now $220-231

So, even after discount, if you're looking for something with 7 Pro and the premium display you're up >$200 from the prices that were fairly consistent from late last year until March/April.

Hopefully they'll have some good end of financial year offers otherwise it may be a long wait for me :-)

  • Good timing to replace my older X61. I'm happy to get an i7 for under $1000. Here's to hoping the quality hasn't decreased in the last few years.

    • It has sadly, although the t series is still mostly good 420-430 being the best. The x series is not what it used to be.

X1 being a classic example, looks lovely but has some design flaws, the x220 etc is now much cheaper feel/build/quality than previously

The edge is as others have said, and dont waste time with L series

      I have a x201 and using a T420s now + various X60/X61T's, i support t61, t400, t410-420, t510 & various L series and edges. I was an IBM thinkpad Tech for almost 5 years

      The T420 is king!

      • T420 is the king… Except for its 16:9 display.

T430 is coming in June with Ivy Bridge. But now chiclet keyboard is standard across the whole ThinkPad series (T430/T530/W530/X230/etc). ARGHHHHHH.
