Buying my 1st Electric Scooter

Hi OZB community, i’m looking at getting my first scooter but have no idea what to look for in terms of brand, price etc. Range wise i’m looking for something around 45km possibly slightly more. I was looking at the xiaomi mi pro 2 which is around $630 but i know it’s been cheaper before and i’m unsure how it compares to g30l, g30 max, f40a and other models. Puncture proof tyres are a must, any suggestions/recommendations/thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Teen faces court after failing to pedal on his e-bike in Torquay

A teenager has faced a children’s court over charges of riding a motorcycle while unlicensed after police allegedly observed him not pedalling for up to ten seconds.

        That's a funny story really:
        https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/truecrimeaustralia/poli…

Even though it sounds like he was a repeat offender the judge wasn't interested in setting a precedent:
"The case which was withdrawn due to insufficient evidence sparked further conversation with The magistrate said the law needed to catch up when it came to powered assisted bikes."

Segway G30L (G30LP) and F40A are both excellent 'beginner' scooters and will be better than the Xiaomi Pro 2 scooter. For an inner city commute I can recommend them, but expect their advertised max range to be less. For example the F40A advertises 'approx 40km range', but under what conditions was that established?

"Typical Range: tested while riding under full power, 75 kg (165 lbs) load, 25°C (77°F), 60% of max. speed on average on pavement".

See that's not entirely realistic is it? You'll presumably be going up hills or maybe on gravel where that'll have an impact on battery life.

For this reason I typically recommend getting something built more for offroad as you get a larger battery, more range and a much smoother ride thanks to suspension. In a previous post I made a comparison between the $1899 Bolzzen Commando and the $1699 Dragon Cyclone Pro. These are both the best budget escooters you can get at the moment and blow the Segway and Xiaomi scooters out of the water.

Now for your question about puncture proof tyres. In my linked comparison above the Cyclone Pro uses tubeless tyres so that'll be far more puncture proof than regular tyres.

Typically for a tyres with inner tubes it's recommended that you check your air pressure regularly and have it at 45-50psi depending on your weight. It's also recommended to use a tyre sealant. If you're cheap you can use Green Slime or if you want the best then get Blue Armor-Dilloz Extreme that's designed specifically for escooters.

Do these electric scooter rules allow you to do what you want to do?

    https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/aboutus/news-item_44987.asp

Those rules wouldn't even allow me to ride out of my own street, because the adjoining streets have 60km/h limits, and my street and the street it runs into don't have footpaths.

  • Welcome (almost) to the scooter club - I love it and wouldn't go back to public transport. If you're just starting out and want to kick the tyres under $1K I loved my Segway G30 Max. Good range, good handlebar height, some water proofing and can be unlocked to run up to 30km p/h (32 with Gen2 motor). I bought mine with Gen1 from JB for about $900 on sale and have seen them down to something like $700.

If you're after more speed and have some more cash to play with, check out Clear's recommendations above. I'm currently riding an Apollo Ghost from Electic Kicks in Vic which I really like.

Some of the variables to balance when getting into scooting:
Portability / weight: Do you need to fold it up and take it into work, or will you leave it locked outside? Heavier scooted are obviously less wieldly to carry around.
Tyres: Yeah, pneumatic tyres are a pain in the a$$. I use a goo product from the local bike store and am now going to check out the Blue Armor Clear recommended. I tried some after market solid tyres on one of my scooters, but there was a slight speed reduction.
Wet weather - are you riding in the rain? you may want some degree of IP rating / water protection.
Distance - is this for short commutes to the trainstation or longer trips to town? Get something with more range.
Onroad/Offroad: None of the ones in your list are great for offroad.

  • They are illegal to ride on public roads or footpaths in NSW they are classified as motorcycles so beware you could be charged with riding an unregistered vehicle, no helmet, no licence & no insurance. I know the police seem to be turning a blind eye to riders but if you hit a pedestrian expect the worst! I am aware the NSW Govt is considering a trial but no doubt the onus will still be on the user. Please check this https://astorlegal.com.au/electric-scooter-laws-in-nsw/

Why is it someone from VIC or NSW that have to push their own laws onto everyone else every single time?. The OP's location is Perth and they're legal in WA.

      • +1

As per usual, the world must be centred around Melbourne/Sydney.

      • they're legal in WA

With a lot of onerous conditions.

        • A lot better than Victoria's backwards laws.

The old 200w 10kmh limit in W.A. was a bit of a deal breaker:
          https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/aboutus/news-item_44987.asp
It seems that has changed and there's no power limit now, even though the above website hasn't been updated:
          https://rac.com.au/car-motoring/info/e-skateboard-e-scooter-…
The new rules apply to small electric rideable devices (classed together as eRideables), that are no more than 125cm long, 70cm wide and 135cm high, weigh 25kg or less, and are not capable of travelling faster than 25km/h when propelled by the motor on level ground.

Tassie is similar, new rules were pushed trough to allow Beam & Neuron to operate here… It's odd e-bikes are still limited to 200w with a throttle, 250w pedal-assist, grrrr… Why can you have a 1000w scooter but you can only have a 250w e-bike, silly…

Edit: Here's the new W.A. Gov E-Rideables page with the current laws:
          https://www.wa.gov.au/organisation/road-safety-commission/er…

  • There are many in Sydney who are riding these scooters illegally, I know I see them in the city all the time, just trying to raise a bit of awareness for Ozbargain NSW readers.

  • I’ve narrowed my search down to 2 the G30L and the F40A, which is the better option? I’ve looked at the G30 Max and it’s a tank so decided against that. Both the G30L and F40A seem to have similar specs, which would you guys pick?
