Looking for New Router for nbn HFC

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a new router replacement for my current device.

I live in a two storey house, double bricked and since the inception of NBN the router has been relocated to the rear of the house upstairs and even though the previous location was only a few meters away, it made a world of a difference.

I'm currently using the D-Link AC2600 which I purchased from JB Hi-Fi however I'm thinking of replacing it as I absolutely despise their interface and lack of mobile app support and I think there could be stronger options since the house is so big and at any one time 6-7 people using the internet simultaneously.

I have previously used Netgear in the past so I am leaning towards them unless there are options as equal or better.

Thanks y'all

    • Thank you. If you have experience with TP-Link, how's their mobile app?

The Deco app is great. Easy to setup the unit plus plenty of features. Parental controls, network optimization, create a guest network, speed test, block devices to name a few features. Anyone can use the app provided they have the login.

      • A TP-Link Deco X73-DSL is designed for nbn FTTN and FTTB.

For nbn HFC purchase a different Deco variant. For example a set of TP-Link Deco M9 or Deco X20 or Deco X55.

  • tp-link are the new netgear. Good brand.

I use the google nest three pack. Super simple to setup & fixed all the blackspots.

But regularly on sale for $399.

    • Appreciate the response. I've been looking at the google nest, would you say they have all the main features that, say a netgear would have? Because I know Google can sometimes be a simpleton with their interfaces

      • They are, but you can edit what you need. Anything specific you want? I've installed a dozen of these for various people.

        • I'm pretty tech savvy. But it's just this dlink interface is so bad. Just the main things tbh, Ip blocking, router reboot, reset, QOS etc.

          • @jnathanc: Think you would prefer the TP-Link. Googles pro is it's simple & interfaces with the rest of the Google ecosystem. You can do most of what you want (google allows you to 'prioritise' devices, like QOS but simple)

TP-Link has a way better interface than D-Link (I use them at work).

For home I prefer the nest wifi personally, it's just easy.

            • @Yorkshire-Man: Alright amazing. Thank you for your input. Sometimes simple works the best, I just don't want to shell out 400 and then have it be too simple

@jnathanc: For me its simple, but in a good way. It does what I need it to do, the app is easy and if you need more 'points' adding its very easy to do. I also have added more speakers & one of their "Nest Hubs" which makes an amazing alarm clock.

Get any reasonable modem (usually the one provided by the provider is fine) and a decent router. I've never looked back after buying my first ASUS router, many years ago. Very happy with ASUS RT-AC86U, although RT-AX86U is probably superior.

I had to buy an Archer VR400 months ago as my previous modem was not compatible with FTTN. It's a modem/router, but I use it as a modem only and still have my ASUS as router, which is perfect. No idea if the range is good enough for you. If it is not, you can always add a second ASUS and create an AiMesh.

    • asus merlin is pretty good

The Asus RT-AC86U is a great workhorse. Serves my home of 15-20 devices daily without hassles.

RT-AX86U is even better but at 2x the price I can't justify the upgrade. You don't need AX unless you have NBN 250 or higher and most of your devices has wi-fi 6.

      • Agreed! I also have lots of devices, easily manage VPN connections… It's perfect.

  • Get a mesh instead, works great on 2 storeys

    • Any suggestions on meshes or do they all work okay? Amazon Eero 6 for example.

      • TP-Link Deco seems to be the OZBargain favourite.

        • I've heard of those, they look like smoke alarms

      • I've only ever tried Google Wifi and it's great but I do see way cheaper ones on Ozb

since the inception of NBN the router has been relocated to the rear of the house upstairs and even though the previous location was only a few meters away, it made a world of a difference.

The fact that you imply that you were forced to change the location of the modem(/router) indicates to me that your NBN is either HFC or FttP and therefore you don't need a modem, just a router.
Can you confirm your NBN technology? Is your Internet no longer coming into the house via a telephone line?
If it's not coming in by Telephone line, then NBN provide the modem and you just need a router, the options open up and you could just look at the MESH wifi router setups to get better WiFi throughout your home.

  • That's correct, apologies for the confusing title, but I do just have HFC at this property and thus just need a router. I am looking at mesh systems as it looks the most promising

    • One thing to be careful of when buying MESH systems is the AUthentication that they support.
I believe that Eero (AMazon's MESH system) doesn't support PPPoE Authentication that ISPs like Internode use for example.

ASUS, Netgear, Ubiquiti, Google Nest, Tenda, Synology and TP-Link all support PPPoE and IPoE authentication out of the box.

eero requires a firmware update to support PPPoE. IPoE is supported out the box.
