Good Performance Laptop (or Brand Recommendation) for Consulting Work under $2000?

Hi, i will be starting work as a consultant, so i might be required to move to a lot of clients throughout the week, work from home, do presentations, etc. What would be a good laptop you would recommend for this? I'm looking at no more than $2,000 and must be at least 10 Generation intel core i5 (equivalnet, or better), 16 GB ram.

I don't care that it looks good, just that it will survive and that it has a decent battery life to avoid needing to have it plugged in the whole time. I've used lenovo in the past and they are pretty tough and resistant. Looked at their website, but there are so many variations of processors (Core i7, core i7vPro, AMD Rizen, etc) that i don;t know which one to choose. All i know is that i DON'T want an HP one, as those have been crap in my personal experience in the past.

Do you have any other brands you would recommend looking at?

The last time i purchased a laptop was in 2017 so haven't been keeping up with the models, processors or brands.

Thought anyone?

Time to visit JB Hi-Fi and short list few ?

    • JB is not the right place for a serious business machine as those models usually wouldn't be sold via retail channels.
OP, I'd say Thinkpad would be the way to go but take your pick from one of these models Lenovo: T series, HP: Probook, Elitebook, Dell: Inspiron, Vostro, XPS

Also based on your line of business a Macbook could also be a very strong contender if not the best.

      • Thanks! Thinkpads looks good, have had dell in the past and was also really happy, will look what's available for purchase

      • Jb hifi /HN etc usually got all these, some sales person would put him in correct path. OP hasn't even done a short list/home work yet. This is like going to a car yard and asking I want a fast car.
What screen size, weight , HD, connectivity etc.

        • JB/HN must be selling very different laptop models in your area as I'm yet to see a single ThinkPad T, Probook or a Vostro sold in any of their B&M outlets or on the website. Business laptop/desktop/workstation models are quite different in build quality(used to be but much less these days), support options (i.e. 3 yr onsite) and even BIOS and hardware security settings compared to consumer models released by the same brand and I'd highly doubt "the experts" at HN or JB would put OP in the correct path and the only path they would put OP would be whatever the brand that would give them the highest commission.

          • @websterp: I think you are thinking too hard, look what this tread gets you, Think Pad, Apple, MS Surface and even Acer.

            • @boomramada: Not really. Just validating what pretty much everyone else have said here . i.e. ThinkPad T or MacBook, etc.

If you are looking for a serious workhorse you choose from the business range or a MacBook. Simples.

              • @websterp: It's all personal OP, I use Dell/ MS Surface as serious workhorse no issues what so ever, but would I recommend to someone? Maybe not, but for my colleague, yes. As everyone needs/requirements/budget are different.

  • I too tend towards Lenovo … T Series Thinkpads have been my traditional weapon of choice.

  • Would you consider Apple?

Not really, have been using windows for too long, so don't want to go and have to learn the basics again. I consider myself a power user, so moving to mac would slow me down until i am able to fully use the OS (and not a big fan of the apple acosystem)

  • A MacBook is probably the way to go unless you absolutely need certain native Windows apps.

    • Not a big mac fan, so ideal a windows machine.

  • IBM thinkpad

OP wants a 10th gen i5 so don't think IBM made any in 2005

  • MS surface laptop?

    • Was thinking about those. But if it configure to have one of those girls keyboards next to them? I would think the specs are not that good because the selling point of just then being extremely compact.

  • Surface book

Highly recommend a Dell Latitude with 3 years of ProSupport with on-site services. They went to my home and fixed my problem in just one day.

    • Looks good, thanks!
