10 Minutes of Running = 1 Plastic Bottle Cleaned up (23 May to 8 June) by adidas and Parley

Should we do an unofficial OzBargain meetup in each state to help clean the ocean? Thoughts?

Similar to #teamseas initiated by MrBeast, adidas is doing a Run For The Ocean campaign with Parley to help clean the ocean by doing an outdoor sport

More info here

For every 10 minutes of running, and other running-based sports, such as tennis or football, adidas and Parley will clean up the equivalent weight of 1 plastic bottle — up to 250,000 kg

You can pickup more than 1 plastic bottle in 10 mins of walking on any beach or picnic hotspot or boat ramp. If that's really the motivation, then wouldn't #trashtag be a better thing to do?

    • Depends on if you live close to the sea. I live 30 minutes away. So the cost of my time and also fuel would just be a feel good exercise.

If you picked up a plastic bottle and prevented it from going into the storm drains, you have prevented it from entering the bay / ocean.

        • All my bottles goes to recycling but I'm getting another one picked up where I can't (economically) be.

@netjock: GG57 and Hybroid's points, in my opinion, is that most people would come across 1 plastic bottle or some equivalent amount on rubbish in any 10 minute walk in any location. So surely those people who are so "environmentally conscious" that they're participating in this "promotion" could double the outcome and actually pick up rubbish while on their walk.

Aboslutely get your point that this "promotion" is getting rubbish picked up, and participating is helping; but to say it's allowing people who couldn't otherwise pickup rubbish is a bit of a stretch. It is ultimately a promotion and virtue signalling by Adidas.

I’m seeing more discarded masks than plastic on my walks….

I would run for 10 minutes if it equates to 1 minute of lobbying for non-recyclables plastic tax (medical/recyclable plastic exempted). I hate these "do your bit" promos when companies are directly responsible for producing it in the first place yet are ignored.

    Adidas just want your data.

Surely it is more feasible to walk and pick up plastics, and dispose of correctly, than run and have some corporate entity nominally claim to have done it.
And reduce your own use of plastics.

  • If we really cared about plastic we would be running mock GPS runners on our phones instead of physically going outside and running and getting tired!

  • Interesting initiative, but it felt like adidas just wants people to install their running app to grab some marketshare.

There are other fitness related charity initiatives. The one I have been looking at recently is The Push-up Challenge which is a fund raising program for mental health related charities (Lifeline, Movember, etc). For the upcoming OzBargain EoFY charity donations, we will also be focusing on mental health ones, so I thought maybe it would be an interesting one to do. Just 3,139 pushups in 24 days. Anyone interested?

    • I could but isn’t that like ~140 push-ups per day per person?

      • The rule says it's okay to spread out. 140 would be just 10 per set, one set every hour for 14 hours. When you add up it's probably less than 10 minutes of running each day.

        • Alternatives such as sit-ups, squats or tailored exercises are also welcome!

Sure, count me in Scotty! Lemme know what the deeds are
