  • What is the usual price?

    • +2

It's a discontinued model so RRP is irrelevant. Cheapest it's been prior was $1999 but sold out and replaced with the 240Hz model.

  • +1

    EDIT: DEAL 1 SOLD OUT.

  • +1

    Tf is a 3070p

    • +2

Max P as opposed to Max Q

      • +1

except its not actually max-p its only 130w, not blaming it on you, OP or the amazon listing, its gigabyte misleading customers with their 'max-p' branding.

        • +1

130W is correct for Max-P is it not? It's not like it's supposed to be the full TDP of the desktop chip

          • -1

@deanylev: no because full powered 3070 laptop gets 140w. as opposed to what gigabyte is claiming.

    • what is the difference between 3070p and 3070?

      • its not an official designation, some manufacturers use it to claim its 'max powered'.

but in this case it is not, since max powered 3070 laptop chips can take up to 140w (125w+15wDB), while the gigabyte model can only take 130w (115w+15w)

if i have to say this is borderline false advertising.

  • +5

Once you go 17 inch it is hard to go back ;). Tbh this has amazing specs but only 15 inches for a dedicated gaming beast is a dealbreaker. Would hate to waste 300hz and use an external monitor.

    Pretty excellent deal otherwise

    • +2

yeah I love my Aorus 17g

    • +2

Really comes down to preference. Recently got a Razer Blade Pro 17. The bigger screen is appreciated but the larger size does impact portability. If I were to lug it around daily, I’d go 15” (or even 14”) but as a desktop replacement 17” is the preference

      • yep there's no one size fits all here

17 is good for desktop replacement, 14 is good for portability, but also can work for people who plug them in to a monitor for gaming

in my case I really like the flexibility of being able to deploy a workplace/gaming rig with little to no compromise in 2 minutes anywhere I go, so 17 inch is the way to go for me. it's so natural for me that I even don't consider 16" or smaller models anymore. for gaming / productivity they just don't exist as far as I am concerned

I had a few 15 inchers out of curiosity, and even a 16 incher, but nah, all of them feel cramped

if I know that I won't need raw computing power or don't plan to game, I take a tiny Lenovo Duet (chromebook slash tablet). everything can be done either in chrome browser or in an android app. even more portable than any laptop setup possible. also fantastic for media consumption

    • Also bought an Airbus 17g in the last deal. It's sensational.

      • +5

Well, that was a weird auto correct that I missed.

        • +3

I’m sure buying an Airbus would be sensational

      • Is their an OzBargain deal on them? Asking for a friend.

    • I know what you mean - I stopped buying laptops (although work still gives us 15.6" things) after my HP 18" lappie. Same with desktop monitors…

  • +4

I love my Aorus 17g. quality is much higher than I anticipated. and that's coming from someone who had a Dell, an Acer, a Razer 17 Pro, HP Omen, Gigabyte A5, Kraken X15 etc. in the past 12 months

also last but not least, Aorus is made in free Taiwan, as opposed to mainland China

    • +3

Yikes, 7+ laptops in 12 months?! Did I read that correctly? Are you a reviewer (or other job that requires you to change/use multiple laptops so often)?

      • +2

well I am a laptop technician, but in this case a lot of these units were returned due to issues

Omen 16 was crashing quite predictably after 20 minutes of gaming, AX5 had a problem with its 240hz panel, Razer had issues with flickering and audio static, Acer was sold on, Metabox was great but sold on, Dell was badly overheating and went right back, same thing plus other annoying issues happened to Kraken X15

        bumpy ride, eh

I should probably make reviews but can't be bothered I guess

        • +1

This man provided invaluable info when I shopped for my Nitro laptop. An excellent buy. Good work, sir.

          • @Pusheencat: glad I could help

if I didn't need a wider color coverage on the built in panel, I would have probably kept mine

good machine for what it cost

            • @shabaka: What's your opinion on the laptop market? I'm looking to upgrade from my Acer Nitro 5 3060 so that I can max out my settings at 1440p (I use an external monitor). I hear a new gen of graphics cards are coming out and that will drop the price of this gen of laptops. Is my Nitro easy to sell, should I wait for the new GPUs to push down laptop prices?

              • +1

@Pusheencat: yes, nitro should be easy to sell, 3060 is your main card

sell now, pick something up closer to eofy

what's your budget? to max out 1440p you will need a 3070

                • @shabaka: Not sure about budget, just going to lurk in OzB and wait for a good laptop with cheerful comments (also hope stock doesn't run out first).

Looking at the recent deals, I think aiming for EOFY in mid-late June means I'll be spending ~$1800. No need for 17" since I'm using an external monitor. What do you think of laptops with a 3080? Those don't seem to show up on OzB often and the jump in price from 3070 to 3080 is a lot.

                  Looking through past deals -

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/688332 - Razer Blade 14 for $3399
                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/684761 - HP Omen 17.3 for $2579

Also read your comment on questionable QC and CS on the HP. So I guess it's going to be ~$3000 for a decent 3080? Going to need to think hard about whether max settings are worth that much.

                  • +1

@Pusheencat: to be honest, the jump between 3070 and 3080 on mobile platform isn't vast. it's almost negligible

you're better off getting a well designed 3070 rather than a 3080 based system with cut corners, if your budget is fixed

for example there was a refurb Gigabyte Aorus with 3080 for roughly $2150 in the last batch of refurb at JW, and it disappeared quickly, but that 3080 was 100w TGP and a higher powered 3070 would beat that

3080 sounds fantastic, but there isn't much improvement over a 3070

so if it was my money I would go for a 3070. which I did

watch out maybe units with 30x0 refresh will get widespread by EOFY (3070 Ti, 3080 Ti), and non-refresh models might drop in price (3070 non-Ti), so prices might change more

                    • @shabaka: Solid advice on 3070 vs 3080 GPU, probably nothing worth ~$500-1000 difference in price. I'll be watching the EOFY deals. Thank you, my man

                      • +1

@Pusheencat: if you have access to Education pricing (any email account ending in edu.au will do), HP have an Omen 16 with good 144hz panel and Ryzen 7 / 3070 for $2399 which isn't too bad

I liked the design of Omen 16 I had, but my unit was crashing consistently after 20 minutes of gaming, I just got unlucky. if not for that, I would have kept it

                        https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/student/omen-by-hp-laptop-16-c…

my only concern was 4 zone RGB keyboard at this price point. I would love to see a per key RGB and mechanical at this price. but at least it has a metal build

also this thing comes down to $2140 with ebay plus

                        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325103116614

Dell G15 5520 with 3070 Ti and a good panel

but it's a plastic build, and only one storage slot. but DDR5 memory and 12th gen Intel. also it might run hot, like Dells tend to, but if you intend to run stationary on external monitor, cooling can be enhanced with cooling pad

  • Deal 1 sold out. Deal 2 still available

  • Feel like Legion 5 Pro is better?

    • Link to current active deal?

      • Looks like they're not selling so many models, making way for the new gen I guess.

    • -2

L5P is great, but depends on personal preference

e.g. I don't want a QHD panel in my gaming laptops, FHD is plenty. so I wouldn't buy L5P. also, L5P comes with 8 week lead time. also no per key RGB. and display isn't 300hz

so depending on what's important for you, make an educated choice

      • +1

L5i (non pro) for 12th gen reportedly (in reviews) has the same build quality as the pro variant and comes in FHD…

        • yes, saw that. still I chose Aorus 17g for 300hz panel, full metal build, mechanical keyboard, per key RGB, and something else.. can't remember what haha

          • @shabaka: just wondering, cause i got conflicting answers… does your Aorus 17 (11th gen?) support USB charging?

            • +1

@meong: no. also I don't think any Aorus does that

      • I have l5p and is unbelievably excellent. The screen is so good.

        • yeah, but the price is almost x1.5 compare to this one

          • @Stigmat: I bought in tje last deal. 30% at lenovo website plus 9% cashrewards. 39% off.
            Just under $1900 for 5800x and 3070 and 144hz 2k screen.
They have that deal once a year so you got to time the upgrade right.

  • +1

I recently bought the 3070 model and it's been absolutely excellent (once I fixed the built in software), highly recommended.

    • +1

are you referring to the control centre? what did you do?

      • +4

I am indeed. I ended up uninstalling it and installing this https://github.com/Ghioaga/AeroMinimal.

        • thank you! what specific issues were you aiming to resolve by this? I have been using original CC and I haven't noticed any issues, maybe once or twice it glitched out

          • +1

@shabaka: The main thing was actually just the keyboard changing to RGB mode every time I unplugged the AC adapter. On Reddit people seem to reckon that CC causes all sorts of issues, but I didn't use it for enough time to find out :)

  • +2

Would you notice a difference between 300 hz and 240hz?
Also no comment on either variant around brightness.

    • no. Your battery might though.

    • +2

      in daily life? not really

in gaming it might come in handy just because 300hz panel can also run at 240hz, and that gives you a wider choice of divisors

      150 - 100 - 75 - 60 - 50 for 300
      120 - 80 - 60 - 48 for 240

so depending on the game, you could choose to limit frames to one of these, and forget about vsync

but seriously even that argument is drawn out. 300 vs 240 still usable divisors on both sides. only relevant for eSports, and even there 300-240-150-120 doesn't really matter, you need to have inhuman reaction to see the difference

      • In terms of display quality there is probably some noticable differences. I imagine they had to cut corners to get it refreshing at 300hz. Maybe the brightness or the color quality.

        • that's the consequence of higher refresh rate, yes

but nothing stopping you from running it at 60hz when doing day to day tasks and only 300hz when gaming.

picture looks crisp at 60hz and smooth at 300hz

      • I suspected as much but honestly apart from the divisible number the top end of 240and 300 is difficulty to ascertain differences

        • +1

yes. I swear I could catch the difference between 120hz screen and 165hz, but above that it's all marketing as far as I can tell. they are all buttery smooth, but depends on screen's GTG

  • Is this the best RTX 3060 max P laptop for the price range? I kinda need one for my AUD 1800 budget but the 3070 version sold out. The 3070 one is still available for 1999 in other retailers though.

  • +3

Darn, I missed out on Deal 1.

But I did some Googling and came across 'Shopping Express'. They're selling the newer model (Win 11 with 240hz) of Deal 1 for $1999.00 but it gets discounted to $1799.10 (not including shipping) after adding to the cart. It appears that a 10% discount code, 'STRW10MAY', is automatically applied but it can also be applied manually.

Also, it says it comes with 24GB RAM which seems unusual to me. I have a feeling that they've made a mistake by combining the 16GB RAM with the 8GB VRAM making it a total of 24GB.

    Link to site

Screenshot of discount applied in cart

    • +1

Maybe they are calculating ram + GPU ram?

    • -1

      not bad!

    • -1

You should put this as a deal. Probably edges the current one

      • +1

You can't check it out. Product not available.

        • +1

Didn't actually check the deal or add to cart but. Thought the deal was worth posting based on price, but based of op it was available. Must have sold out

        • Oh, it appears to be out of stock now :(.

    • Did you order? Did it ship? My order is still in "Pick" state.

  • In general how would these compare against similar Asus models in terms of performance, quality & longevity? I need to buy my son a laptop for high school year 7 by Term 1 2023. Doesn't have to be a 3070 graphics card as he has a gaming computer (with 3070ti) so hoping to spend around $2000-$2400. Currently looking at an ASUS TUF Gaming A15.
