Need Advise/Help on a Electronic Item I Bought and Wanting to Return for a Refund

Hi,

Bought a laptop only yesterday for my nephew's birthday and unfortunately he's been gifted a laptopn. I was late by 2 hours on the day to gift hhim.

Anyway I did ask the store for refud and they explained that change of mind is not a valid reason for refund and I am wanting to know do i have any other option to get a refund as this is not change of mind but change of circunstanvnces in lesst than 24 hours.

Your advise is greatly appreciated.

    • I know right….feel like an idiot to keep as a suprise and be in this position.

  • +9

That is change of mind. You can still gift it to him , two laptops is an option.

    • 2 laptops for 20 year old when he's already have chrome notebook. Tried that too but didn't work.

Has the Laptop box been opened and what store did you purchase it from?

    • No, still in original box and only bought yesterday. It's not even been 24 hours.

      • +1

        Store?

      • Harvey norman…

"Please choose carefully as refunds are not normally provided where you have simply changed your mind, made a wrong selection or simply found the goods cheaper elsewhere. We recommend you carefully preview any orders before adding them to your shopping cart and proceeding with your order."

I mean you can try and speak to the manager and explain the situation. It says "not normally" so you may have a chance.
It is a long shot, though.

not change of mind but change of circunstanvnces in lesst than 24 hours.

If it's not faulty, then it's a change of mind. Your personal circumstances don't matter.

  • -1

Any valid reason that i can use for them to convice for a refund.

    • no, you may as well just keep it and use it for another gift or use it yourself.

I suppose you could try to mention that it's specs have been shown to be inadequate for your use case.

The fact that it's unopened should make it far easier to negotiate a return. In fact, I'm actually surprised that they knocked you back. I'm not saying that we're entitled to them - they do have the TnCs but I've never had any issues in the past.

      • HN staff won't want to return it because their sales commission goes down. Similar for managers. He may have more success in asking for an exchange.

      • +1

Just curious why I need to get negged? I don't think I said anything offensive?

        • +6

Maybe because you suggested saying something that wasn't true?

        • +2

mention that it's specs have been shown to be inadequate for your use case.

Unless HN staff picked the laptop for OP, or if the laptop was advertised to do something it can’t, they’re SOOL with that argument. When you pick your own purchase, it’s on you to ensure it fits your use case.
          Something something responsibility

Ask for store credit, probably the only option they’d consider

    It's my birthday tomorrow :)

  • +4

You could try and ask for store credit.

    • that's one option……still refund be nice due to its value (2K)

      • +2

Are you saying he was pre-gifted a chromebook, and so you didn't give him this $2K laptop? Just wondering because likely any $2K laptop would be better then most chromebooks?

        • he already has chrome notebook and he'd been gifted one laptop only 2 hours before i arrived.

      • +11

Who gives a $2k laptop to a 20 year old for a birthday present?

        • +6

          OP.

          • +9

@SF3: Technically even op didn't, as he still has it.

        • laptop was only $1490. but bought 3 year protection plan. laptop bag, micrsoft student office suite. so it bought the price to 2k.

          • +2

@twofoursix: Yeah no chance they’re gonna refund the protection plan and office suit for change of mind. Might not even able to get that back as store credit.
Seriously OP, cop it as a lesson and make sure to research your own circumstances better next time to account for sudden “change in circumstances”. It’s not the retailers’ responsibility to take this burden for you.

          • +1

@twofoursix: Wow - my nephew is lucky to get $100 for his birthday from us. He must be something special.

eBay Facebook market and gumtree, pal.

  • -1

would i get same price…specially if the warranty won't be in new purchasers name?
    Thansk for the advise tho.

  • +1

If it’s brand new sealed u at least have SOME chance of a store credit. Store person might fob you off, ask to talk to a floor manager or franchisee and PLEAD your case.

Bought a laptop only yesterday ….

    Was it a bargain?

I am wanting to know do i have any other option to get a refund ……

DYOR - Do you think you can sell it for the same price you bought it for or better?

    • Hmm won't say bargin it was part of HN hot deals. Yes i have to start putting on market place but why would someone pay same price when they can get it from HN for sma eprice unless i discount it by couple hundred. Also if the new purchaser buys the waaranty won't be under his name right?

      • +1

Depends on whether the hot deal was a really good price and also whether it's still available when you list the laptop for sale. Check what the lowest price is for the laptop and beat it when you list yours for sale.

Others here should be able to assist with your warranty query

  • Change of mind is the same as change of circumstances.

I ordered a steak for dinner but my boyfriend decided to order the same so I needed to amend my order to a chicken Kiev because you can't be having same meals.

I haven't changed my mind about the steak but the circumstances force my hands … I think

      • +2

        Poor chicken, lucky cow
        ….

      • Youre supposed to call it Chicken Kyiv now…

  • +6

I was late by 2 hours on the day to gift hhim.

Gifting is now a competitive sport now?…

    • +2

Yep, he tried sprinting to give it to him but I would've thrown it like a discuss, much quicker.

  • Did you by any chance purchase with a credit card which has refund protection, such as some ANZ cards?

    • +1

      That sounds made up

    • -1

yes…..Citi bank CC……where can i find refund protection clause on citi bank cc?

      • +4

….. in your CC PDS, if you card has complimentary insurance. Look for it?

  • Normal policy and there is no law against it.

    HA!!

  • +3

Update your own with the new one, sell your old one.

  • +2

Just an update: Spoke to sales rep who sold me the unit and he firmly said it's not possible to refund but return for diffrent laptop.
I requested for him to put through to the manager and spoke to him for 20 minutes pleading my case but he didn't say a word except "i understand your circumstances but this is change of mind and we won't be able to refund" I also asked for store credit and told that in months will be buying from HN and that was rejected too in line "we don"t offer store credit for change of mind"

Now speaking to Cit bank if i qualify for refund protection, see how that goes.

Thank for all your comments so far.

    • You don't need to call Citibank, you can look up the credit card insurance PDS yourself.

    • +3

On what basis would you quality for refund protection?

  • +6

    Your advise is greatly appreciated

You must be new here. OzB users do not recommend purchasing from Harvey Norman, ever, period.

That is except when Gerry loses money, e.g. 50x free photo print deals.

  • +2

You should’ve told them you were returning it be because of Spite.
