IRN BRU Sugar Free Soda (Imported) $0.69/Litre. IGA; Canning Vale, WA

110

Hey OzBargainers. This is my first post!

I was just at IGA Canning Vale (WA), and saw that they had 1 litre IRN BRU Sugar Free Soda's selling at $0.69 each. They are normally sold for around $3.69.

In fact, from memory $0.69 per litre bottle is cheaper than they used to sell it in Scotland.

For those of you that aren't familiar with IRN BRU, feel free to click here: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=IRN+BRU

Unfortunately I couldn't get a picture of the price in store, however I have uploaded my receipt :)

Enjoy!

  • Mmmmm yum (minus the sugar free part!) - good to see another Scot on the board ;)

  • Hey Boss,
This looks interesting. Do you reckon it would be a good mixer for vodka? It apparently has a bit of a citrus flavour.

I looked it up and the most notable thing about this brew, other than the fact that it competes very well against coke and pepsi in scotland, is the controversy in advertising.

    This from Wikipedia:

ControversyOne of the most controversial Irn-Bru television adverts evoked 1950s entertainment. A mother plays the piano, while the father and two children deliver a song which ends with the mother singing: "…even though I used to be a man". This advertisement aired in 2000, but when it was re-aired in 2003, it received seventeen complaints[8] from people who claimed it was offensive to transsexuals. Issue A14 of the Ofcom Advertising Complaints bulletin reports that the children's response to their mother's claim was not offensive. The advertisement was meant to be a joke about changing points of view over time. However, the scene involving the mother shaving at the end of the advertisement was deemed to be potentially offensive to transsexuals, and so it was taken off the air.

In 2003, an Irn-Bru commercial which showed a midwife trying to entice a baby from its mother's womb during a difficult delivery sparked a complaint from one viewer. Some saw it as upsetting to women who had suffered miscarriages.[9]

One billboard featured a young woman in a bikini along with the slogan "I never knew four-and-a-half inches could give so much pleasure". Another featured a picture of a cow with the slogan "When I'm a burger, I want to be washed down with Irn-Bru". This billboard received over 700 complaints but was cleared by advertisement watchdogs.[10] A billboard which featured a depressed goth and the slogan 'Cheer up Goth. Have an Irn Bru.' was also criticised for inciting bullying.[11]

    • The diet version is ok with Voddie, I would go for an Aussie made vodka that not many people drink called Vodka-O….Smirnoff etc is too strong a flavour for the Bru.

      • 2nd the Vodka O call… we just switched to this at work and it's great with mixers.

It's more like creaming soda.. what's the sugar free version like?

Original has always been a fav of mine.

    • Agreed. Tastes like creaming soda/snow top to me also.

  • Is this nationwide? and do they sell the sugary version too, i've been paying $4 a bottle or so at coles for ages.

I don't know about the labelling here, but in Scotland they had to put warning labels on the softdrink as it contains two of the six food colourings that have been found to cause hyperactivity (mainly in kids). It contains Sunset Yellow and Ponceau (google them and have a read). In Australia you don't need to state health warnings so they probably have different labelled bottles here. I tried these a few years ago and it did taste ok, but from memory contained no 'iron', contrary to the name :)

There's a good chance the Irn-Bru being sold by IGA is from the same source that Coles is getting it from. While it's made in Scotland, it's being imported by a Western Australian company and is using the same dodgy recipe as the now-dead Occasio company was using when they made it locally. No caffeine. No quinine. It tastes different.

If you look around you can still find the real stuff, but you won't be getting it for the price listed here.

  • They were selling it for this price at the IGA in Joondalup a few months ago.
Didnt think to post it then.
It was close to best before date and lost its fizziness quickly after opening.
    Tasted OK though.

Irn Bru taste best in glass bottles. Had far too much on a recent trip back.

Wow it's pretty cool seeing where I work at on here, I love the void on the receipt, it's like they scanned one, saw the rest, went wtf and then just put it through as a quantity instead of individuals…
To be honest, the sugar free one sells quite a bit more often than the normal IRN BRU

    • Any stock left?

      • Plenty
