Yeah it's expensive, but this deal makes it more palatable.
Twelve South is probably the best and most trustable vertical stand.
No plus members only save 15% not 17% but since I've got Plus I used the plus figures.

    such a waste of money….

    • +3

not necessarily. Yes it's expensive, but it also is very effective if you plan to use your laptop as a desktop replacement with an external screen/keyboard etc. especially if you have limited desk space.

I have one of these. Been using it everyday for ten years.

    • Creates more desk space, so no, not a waste of money at all.

I know the one OP posted is Aluminium and looks pretty good but you can't go wrong with a $3 IKEA hack:

Got mine on Ali express ages ago …. I only used the thin one for my 2017 MBP. Newer M1's are fatter not sure how they fit as i don't have one and didn't think to keep the wider fittings ( as macs were always getting thinner then).

  • Wouldn't it be better thermally for the laptop to be open?

    • Vents are often at the bottom of the laptop so this would help more than having it open, there's no airflow through the keyboard

    • Depends on the design of the laptop, but generally it makes little difference. As hot air rises, you might find more benefit in putting the rear of the laptop towards the ceiling, but that may unbalance the stand.

  • How people turn on their laptops when using these stands? Do they only turn their laptop to sleep mode?

    • +2

Well, if you have a macbook you practically can't turn off the laptop. Like, shutting it down is nearly impossible, since it'll turn back on if you so much as plug it in, or press a key, or open the lid.

That aside, practically every modern laptop has the option of staying on and functional with the lid closed, as long as you have an external monitor and keyboard/mouse setup.

staying on is not the issue… some windows laptops dont even allow any wake up from keyboards/mice!

        • which ones are those? I've never owned a laptop that doesn't allow for wakeup from connected peripherals. Sometimes you just gotta go into the settings if you're using bluetooth and enable device wakeup. It's literally baked into the OS.

          • @TheRealCJ: Gigabyte Aero 15… first time ever I found something like that… basically it doesn't allow any power to the USB when its turned off/hibernate/stand by mode.

I even asked the support team and they confirmed it…

I've checked BIOS, Device Manager, etc… Basically since there is no power to the USB, it couldnt receive any signals from connected devices… I haven't tried WOL/Wifi though…

    • My dock has a power button (Dell WD19TB)
