Is Google Nest Wi-Fi The Best for More Telecom?

Looking at getting the More Telecom Commonwealth Bank deal. They charge $200 for a Google nest wifi or you can source your own one.

Is google nest the best bet or do you recommend something else?

Cheers!

  • Most generic routers are fine for 1-2 rooms if you are an average internet user. If u already got an unlocked router, you'd be fine.

    • Can I just use the Telstra modem? Is it hard to set up with a new service provider?

      • Not sure but i think Telstra modem will be locked for telstra network only.
In ur NBN case modem is the 'NBN Black Box' and you'll need a router and most modern router now are modem+router.
You can get any generic dual band router.

        • I don’t suppose you can recommend a cheap one to go with? I would like to not be tied to a service provider in future. I have a google wifi that I’ll plug into the router.

          • @HereToSave: Google Wi-Fi already has a built-in router. Do you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC? Are you with More Telecom?

            • +1

@Twix: Fttn I’ve had the box a while now. Just read it and it says Router and point. So I will try set it up on Telstra then move to More once contract expires. Pays to read!

        • A Telstra smart modem is compatible with most ISPs.

          • +1

@Twix: You can use More with Telstra smart modem. Under broadband or internet card enter the Sign in and password details there.

  • are they giving you a single pack, 2 or 3 pack?

    • They aren't giving me anything. I have to buy it myself. $200 for the single pack. I'm in a 2x1 apartment

      • for your small space, this single unit mesh(well it wont even be in mesh mode as there isn't a 2nd unit) wont be useful for your case.

i recommend buying your own router

        • Ok, any suggestions? I have no clue about routers

          • @shapebuster: Wouldn't have a clue haha, buy a new wifi 6 one lol

          • @shapebuster: We need to work out if you need a router or a VDSL2 modem + router. Do you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC? If you are not sure check here

How much do you want to spend?

      • If it’s a 2x1 apartment then I would strongly suggest a decent router not an mesh system. It should be able to cover your whole apartment with good signal strength.

  • Keep in mind how this works. Signal comes in from NBN to your modem. Modem sends signal to router. Router sends signal 'over the air' as your home wi fi

Most modems you buy are combined modem/routers; you only need google nest if you have a large space and need to distribute the wifi across an area that exceeds the capability of the modem/router (the meshing part of the nest)

If you have a small space, then 99% likelihood that your usual modem/router (which you may already own) will do the job more than sufficiently.

So you dont need google nest to use the NBN. Do you have internet at the moment? if you do, then you will have a modem/router and that should be fine

if you dont have internet at the moment or dont have a modem/router, you will still need to supply your own modem. So you will have to buy a modem anyway; google nest only does the router bit. Which means you will be buying a modem/router. May as well just buy one and see if it works first, before spending money on google nest.

As to what to buy - given your apartment size pretty much anything will be fine. Just go to officeworks or wherever. Asus, Netcom, Netgear, TPLink

You will see many people tell you to make sure its Wifi -6. Unless you own things that can use wifi-6 (or plan to get them soon) or you will have multiple (10+) devices all connecting at the same time, the difference between wifi-5 and wifi-6 is pretty irrelevant. No point spending heaps to get a wifi6 router if you cant even take advantage of it

nb: above does not apply if you have FTTP
