I just received mine from a previous deal. Word of warning - these burn up hotter than hades on full brightness. So if you're looking to take this out on night walks at the highest setting, it'll be super bright with great distance, but full brightness only lasts for a few seconds before it starts dialling it back to a lower setting.

      So bring the marshmallowes?

I've got one too. A nice wide beam. Sure it runs hot on the highest setting, but I find unless you really want daylight, 1/2 brightness is usually more then enough.

haha Definitely bring the marshmallows! I wanted it to use down on our farm. The wide beam is really great, but unfortunately, the highest setting doesn't stay high for very long. In most instance though, yes, half way is still bright enough for most things.

Did you do a temperature calibration? You need to set ambient and max (which i believe is 55c based off memory)

Once you do this, they stay brighter longer. Out of the box, what you described is very typical.

          • @Mungulz: Ahhh, I didn't even know about that, thanks for the tip!

If you want brighter, but much narrower beam, the IF22A is amazing. Even at about half brightness, it can see a beam on the ground in full sunshine. In fact at 1/2 brightness I can easily see a beam inside the IF25A on full.

@M00Cow: The 22A is another one I'm eyeing off actually. The fact you can see the beam at half strength inside the 25A speaks volumes!

            • @KangaDrew: Yeah the diameter of the beam (or whatever you call the circle of light) at 1m the IF25A is about 40-50cm, the IF22A is about 10cm..

The 25A is great for spotting cane toads on the lawn, the 22A is great for spotting koala/possums in the neighbours trees

  • What would be a good Sofirn light if I want supreme throwing distance, I already have a couple of floods, including SP36Pro

Sofirn SP70 is one of my favorites. Sofirn IF22A for a compact form factor.

      • IF22A looks good, I like to have USB-C charging built in these days

      • Do you have the convoy L6? I wonder how the SP70 compares.

        • I have L6, L7 & L8. SP70 has a larger reflector so more beam for your buck though Convoy L8 with SBT90 is long distance winner, imho, built in charging as well.s

SP70 UI is better than L6 which doesn't have electronic standby - you have to turn it off by tail switch. SP70 can standby by side button plus ramping which I like.

          • @Sillen: Thank you for that. I have learnt a few things. I didn't know there was an L7 or L8.

          • @Sillen: I have the old olight sr90 (would love to drop something new in it) , ft03, L6.. For my next thrower would you get the SP70 or L8. Obviously the blf gt would be great, but can't afford it.

            • @Pixie13: Hard to say which is why I have both:). I like the SP70 'cause it feels like a mace in my hand so I feel a bit safer at night and it has a much wider beam. L8 would throw further but not as much spill to light up the surrounds. As you already have an L6 which is closer to the SP70, get the Convoy L8 with included 26800 cell.

              • @Sillen: Thanks for your advice. I was leaning towards the L8, so that seals that decision.

              • @Sillen: I just saw the FT03S. Now it is a hard choice too.

    • Any recommendation on which tint for the SP36Pro? 6500K cool white or 5000K neutral white.

Use case, bicycle light to spot Kangaroos. Will be turned off or down IF cars approach (very few cars the times we ride).

  • Thanks OP, ordered one! From the ali reviews it looks like this ships with version 2 of Anduril as well, huge plus. Edit: bought this and now I don't know if I can justify the Convoy S21D anymore… dang it.

  • I always wondered, would a light with 4 LEDs at total output of 1,000 lumens (each LED produces 250 lumens) be using the exact same amount of power as a light with just 1 LED producing 1,000 lumens?

    • +1

I think the multi-emitter setup would draw slightly less power. It makes sense if you think about it in terms of amps going to each LED: so if it's 1A total then on a multi-emiter light (4 leds) then each emitter would draw 0.25A. On a single LED light the single emitter would draw 1A. Emitters are more efficient at lower power, so the 4 emitters on lower amps should be more efficient then the single emitter being driven at the higher power i.e. the multi emitter setup should get your more lumens for the same amount of power. (Trade-offs for the multi-emitter setup would be less candela, more floody beam profile).

      • Thanks! What about heat with single LED vs multi-LED? Which would run hotter if total output is say 1,000 lumens?

        • +1

Sorry, I don't have the answer. If you scroll down to the 5th post here: https://budgetlightforum.com/node/78504 it suggests multi-emitters would generate less heat. Personally I think both types can get pretty hot though. Also each emitter has different efficiencies which complicates things (e.g. warmer and high cri emitters are normally less efficient/produce more heat/less lumens than cooler white lights). Body size would also be a pretty big factor too (larger bodies/more cooling fins would arguably have a bigger impact on how cool a torch would be). So realistically you've got a mismatch of torch body sizes in a mismatch of multi/single emitters with different efficiencies - probably best to check case by case for heat outputs!

  • I'm a big fan of Sofirn SP36 series, have used as component for my eScooter headlight design…. https://escootnow.com.au/products/Stonker-Headlight-Series-b…

Is this better than Wuben C3 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/695323 ?

My kids like to shine torches in each other's eyes. Is it a bad idea to buy this?

  • I received my order today. Really fast postage as they sent it from Chullora, NSW. Really impressed by this little light at an amazing price! Can confirm it comes with Anduril 2.0 too.

  • I noticed that if you order the 6500k you get 5000mah battery, while the 4000k came with 4000mah battery.
